Sources of potassium?

Im having some pretty bad leg aches and Charley horse cramps in my calves.  The cramping happens while sleeping, but the aching is constant.  From looking around it seems I need more
potassium.  BESIDES bananas and orange juice what else are good sources of potassium?  I'm eating a banana daily alresdy and have been.

Re: Sources of potassium?

  • Coconut water! You can get regular or flavored ones. I've heard a lot of pregnant women swear by drinking it at night to avoid Charlie horses.

    Tomatoes are a good source.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I do bananas so ill offer the advice of Making sure you are getting enough water and doing some stretching before bed as has helped me a lot :) hope they ease up for you soon because they are no fun!

  • Dark, leafy greens have a lot - maybe try a green smoothie as a nighttime snack to sneak it in before bed.

  • Thanks everyone!  The cramping I can live with because it's rare (hope it stays that way!), but the aching is terrible.  I just want to go home lay in a warm Epsom salt bath, eat bananas and drink smoothies.

i will be the extremely unhelpful person who points out that potatoes have potassium.  even a medium serving of mcdonald's french fries boasts 20% of you DV of potassium.  #notanutritionist
The more I think about this, the more my leg is cramping up as we speak. I knew my OB was trying to kill me when she told me to cut out the processed foods.
  • Watermelon (I think but hey, it's delicious) and spinach.

I had nighttime leg cramps with my 1st pregnancy. I starting drinking some Gatorade before bed and the cramps weren't a problem after that.
  • sweet potatoes, tomato paste/puree/juice, white and kidney beans, yogurt, prune juice, carrot juice, edamame and winter squash
  • KIWIS! Little known fact is that kiwis are natures super fruit. More potassium than bananas, tons of vitamin c, and if you eat the skin it has an obscene amount of fiber.
  • French fries, mango and kiwi! Yum.

I feel like the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding... except instead of Windex, I suggest Gatorade for what ails you ;) Invented at the University of Florida. GO GATORS!

  • Yeah Gatorade has been on my list of things I need... It's not a super natural product but it helps so much with hydration that it seems worth it... Like @megstervt I drink it to prevent/address headaches/migraines mostly and stay hydrated enough not to feel dizzy, but I haven't had too many cramps yet so hopefully that's been helpful in that regard as well... @megstervt I hope your migraine is getting better!

Thanks.  I ended up needing meds from the hospital since I couldn't keep anything down for almost 48 hours :( my little guy hasn't been moving as much since and I'm worried about it.  Really glad it's the weekend and I can just rest.

  • I hope you're feeling better @megstervt! Sorry I didn't see your message until now, migraines are the worst... Another weekend is looking right at us tonight, finally...

I need to up my game with hydration, potassium, and other minerals, because I had two full blown charley horse cramps in both legs last night and the night before, and it was sooooo painful.... I freaked my husband out.... How many bananas can I eat in one day ??? Hydration might be a big culprit though so I'll start with that.
  • With Gatorade, it's awesome for headaches and putting things back into your system but please be careful about the amount you drink, it's horrible for your teeth.

  • Gatorade has been one of my top cravings. I suggest if you're gonna get it do not get the reduced sugar kind. I bought that the other day in attempts to be "good" and it tasted like watered down cough syrup with the most awful aftertaste. Just get the regular!

  • It's been said already, but coconut water has a lot of potassium and is so good for you!! Get organic single origin if you can - my favorite brand is Harmless Harvest and I get it at Whole Foods.
  • I still need to get Gatorade. We were traveling between our two families all weekend and with sleeping in two different beds and my own hip issues the Charley horses were worse then ever. I will be getting some and bananas tomorrow! I personally can't do coconut water I wish I could but the taste is off putting to me sadly

  • @Lindsayleigh1989 try putting it in a smoothie, it doesn't taste as off-putting that way.

  • @oneliloaktree13 good call on the smoothie! I've only tried it straight and I hide all sorts of things in there so I'll have to try that. I'm also trying to just increase my water intake I was reading dehydration could lead to this as well

  • thanks for that link @oneliloaktree13 I try to limit my gatorade to one little 80 cal bottle if I'm going to have it at all I totally can see how people can drink multiple full sized bottles a day.

  • @Kellyj103 Yeah, it's just the amount and what/who Gatorade's function is really meant for, at the moment I doubt we're all running football drills for 12 hours straight ;)

  • Good info on the Gatorade.  I generally only drink coffee and water, but was desperate for hydration and calories during that migraine episode.  Not going lie, obsessively brushed my teeth after reading these comments though!

Also great tip on the smoothies!  I don't like coconut water, but I bet it would be fine in a smoothie!

  • I dilute Gatorade before I drink it, so a bottle is only 1/2 bottle really... But yes everything in moderation... I try to keep it for days when I have a headache and/or feel dizzy...

I did go out and buy coconut water yesterday to give it another chance! I don't love it but I think I can get used to it. And the smoothie idea is great :)
  • Been putting spinach in pretty much EVERYTHING this pregnancy and have yet to have the charlie horses this time.  Im crossing my fingers I didnt just jinx it, but spinach is high in potassium, so maybe give it a go? I do it in eggs, burritos, replace it with rice or noodles, smoothies. I honestly put it in everything, its good stuff.

  • I got all the bananas today at the grocery store!
