Any mom or baby with a cold?

I'm 10 days pp and caught a bad cold two days ago. No idea how as I've been a prisoner in my home. I'm still breastfeeding but limiting contact with LO otherwise which is killing me. I'm walking around with hand sanitizer and wearing a mask. Really scared of her catching it but this morning I noticed a little boogie in her nose. Could that be a sign that she's sick? Do any of your babies have boogers this early?

  • Yep, I've got a nasty cold 3 weeks PP. My brother came by for a visit and his cold showed up the next day so I think that's how I caught it... And I've been so careful and not left the house either, ugh! Now my DH caught it as well just as mine is easing up. So far LO hasn't gotten it, and from what I've read our breast milk gives baby antibodies so often times they won't get sick or not as sick. I haven't worn a mask or anything but try to keep up on hand washing and not kissing her, but she's so close to me all the time there's really no avoiding exposure.

Here's hoping out breast milk works wonders and keeps our LOs cold-free! I've been obsessively checking her nose and temp.

Btw it totally sucks trying to get over a cold on no sleep.

  • Delivered early 7 weeks ago and have had a cold for 3 days. I am not breastfeeding. Cannot limit contact as I am my daughter's primary care giver during the day. I've been wearing non-surgical masks over time I am doing anything with her (which sucks) and washing my hands and using hand sanitizer even MORE than usual. She seems fine. I have been constantly checking her nose for runny snot. Regular old boogers is nothing to worry about as @RachDaRach stated.
  • DD got a shot at the doctor yesterday and has had a slight temp yesterday night and today. She's not herself... Very irritated and crying a lot. She's good when she's on me so I've just been cuddling all day. Sick babies are so sad, I hate seeing her miserable :(
  • I'm 7 days overdue and have a terrible cold. I'm hoping she doesn't come for a few more days to give me time to kick the sick. I don't want to be coughing and gross the first few days baby girl is in this world. What terrible timing!!
  • I'm in the same boat. I have had a cold for 5 days so far LO is doing good. She is two weeks old on Monday. I'm starting with ear and sinus pain today so I think I'm getting worse : ( hopefully she stays healthy.

  • My husband has pneumonia, newborn has pink eye, & sd has a nasty cold. Like pp said bf bf bf! So far dd has escaped congestion.
I will say baby Vicks on the feet w/ socks is magic if your lo does get congested. Also a humidifier & time in a steamy bathroom.
Also - maybe uo but if skip the hand sanitizer - it's killing good bacteria with the bad - just wash your hands.
  • Well my baby caught my cold. I'm so upset. We just got back from the ER because she's been coughing and gagging all night. They tested for and ruled out RSV and whooping cough and said that the coughing and gagging are due to mucus mixing with reflux/spit up in her throat :-( poor thing. She isn't all that snotty so far, just a little this morning. Now I'll be watching her like a hawk to make sure nothing gets worse.

  • DS got sick and ran a fever the day we got home from the hospital, and has been sick three other times.
I've had a sore throat each time, but DD has been fine even with DS constantly helping to take care of her. We all just make sure we constantly wash our hands and DS has done a good job of coughing into his sleeve and turning away.

DD is breastfeeding and also drinks expressed milk from a bottle at night. She is always having some sort of booger in her nostrils.

  • Nosefrida...I got one and holy crap did it ever help my LO. My 2 year old has been sick and gave it to baby. Poor little guy has thick green boogers and the nosefrida works great.

  • @breezypip What prompted you take her to the hospital? Meaning what were the signs of a cold that baby had? I am curious as I monitor my baby post my own cold. She seems fine, but had this random excessive saliva fit this morning.
  • Freaking out a bit, before bed I noticed DS might be getting sick, he had a runny nose. Fast forward to now and he's puked and has chills and a fever!! How do I keep LO from getting this!? She's probably already been exposed
  • @erikaalzet we called our pediatrician on NYE because our baby started coughing and gagging/choking and it was really scary. We weren't necessarily thinking it was due to a cold, but figured it might be since we both had colds. They sent us to the ER because, Murphy's law, she had the symptoms on one of the few days of the year our doctors office is closed (seriously they have the best hours including weekends). They also suspect that the cold could be happening on top of reflux causing the phlegm to mix with spit up, hence why she's gagging. Since then she's had a slightly stuffy nose.

We have a follow up with our ped on Monday so I can post an update then.

And man was I so upset I had to take my 3-week old to an ER and have to sit in a waiting room full of very sick people! I was in tears in there thinking she was being exposed to flu and god knows what else. I had avoided all family gatherings over the holidays to prevent that very situation. Luckily they got me back quickly.

  • I dont think theres any way to stop it my lo is 6 weeks old and has fought of 2 colds already! (The joys of have a preschooler who brings home allsorts) my lo was so bunged up i really felt for him. But Babys are pretty tough although they dont look it
  • I haven't got the cold yet. Thankfully! And neither has my LO. After we got out of the hospital about 2 weeks ago, I ended up with a horrible sinus infection, though. I'm glad those aren't contagious! But my poor baby has some horrible allergies going on, and I feel so bad for him, because momma and daddy knows bad allergies all too well! :/
  • I am 3 weeks 5 days pp and I have a head cold thanks to my husband. Our lo has had some boogers but luckily hasn't caught our colds.

    I hope you feel better!!
  • My two year old son just came down with pink eye!!! He loves his baby sister, but now I trying to keep as much space as possible between them and sanitize everything and wash my hand every time I touch my son. Hoping and praying the baby doesn't get it.
  • I have a cold and unfortunately my lo got his stuffy nose from me. Being a ftm I rushed him to the doctor and we have being using the saline drops with the suctioner and he's sounding alot better every day. He's definitely been a champ; he hasn't cried from it or fussed at all he just loves getting a little more sleep than normal.
  • Unbelievable, I caught a cold.. again! This time I know I caught it from DH and unfortunately unlike last time, DD caught it too this time. I'm calling the pedi first thing tomorrow but wanted to ask how long your little ones were sick for? Does their cold typically last longer than an adult?
  • My LO has been sick for a while now. Coughing and congested and gagging from coughing. I brought him to the drs twice now but they said it was a cold and he seemed fine. Well here we are at 5am and I just finished nursing him and he's wide awake bc he's gagging and can't go back to sleep :disappointed:
  • my dd's cold lasted 5ish days but it was pretty mild & I was crazy with the nosefrida.
  • DH and I had a cold a couple weeks ago.  DS seemed to get a mild version.  He was congested and a little grouchy but it only lasted a few days.  I used saline on a q tip in his nose and then suctioned his little nose out with the nose frida (best invention!).  He doesn't mind it since he gets to lay on the changing table for it and that's his favorite place ever lol.  The bulb syringe did nothing and he acts like his brains are being sucked out with it!
  • LO's going on 1 week of having a cold, thanks to the toddler. Took her to the pedi last Monday since she had a cough but thankfully it's just a cold. We've been pulling all the stops: steam shower, cool mist humidifier, Vicks, and lots of saline and NoseFrida.
