November 2016 Moms

What are you reading?

I will have a lot of downtime this weekend and none of the books on my kindle interest me. Anyone reading anything fun?

Re: What are you reading?

  • What kind of books do you like to read? I have a good amount of recommendations - The Night Circus is one of my favorites.

I also like to check out Amazon's free kindle books, I think you can get up to one a month. Typically not by any big name authors, but the ones I've read have been decent!

  • I loved the Night Circus!! All my books are too heavy. I am looking for something light and fun.
  • I've been reading baby books lately. I'm into Expecting Better by Emily Oster. Pretty interesting read.
  • No joke, shopaholic and baby was listed on books to read either on the Ovia app or WTEWE app.

    Nov16 Siggy Challenge:

  • Do you like young adult fiction? The Selection series by Kiera Cass is good - I've read and re-read that a few times when I need something enjoyable. It's like a royal Bachelor-type setting.

Also, the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series is good too. A bit heavier, but still really enjoyable!

  • The Outlander series is always on my re-read list. I can't recommend those books enough. You'll genuinely fall for the characters. Ignore the show.

I want to but it looks so long. I don't know if I can handle it.

  • I just finished 'The Astronauts Wives Club'.  Very interesting easy read.  Starting 'Girls of Atomic City' next.
  • I just read Confess by Colleen Hoover. I really liked it.

  • High five on the TWSS @aquasocks

  • I think I have the first outlander book somewhere. Maybe I will dig into that one.
  • @aquasocks

I know it's hard, but if you take it all in you'll definitely finish. It's very meaty.

Ok good. I get super frustrated when I don't finish!

  • I'm a huge potter fan and recently got recommendations for "Neverwhere" which I really liked and "The Magician" which I almost regret reading (overly sexualized cross between HP and Narnia).

    I loved "The Night Circus".

  • "Where'd You Go Bernadette" is my most recent easy read favorite. I couldn't get into "The Night Circus" even though I really really wanted to. I also loved "Me Before You," "A Life in Men" and "What Remains" but they're all a little heavier easy reads.

I love reading so keep the book recommendations coming!
  • @jrussell16 Me before you is one of the ones I have on my kindle that I just can't get into! Does it get any better? The beginning is so depressing!

@HeyBooHey Yes it does! It took me a while to get into it but it was totally worth it. It's heartbreaking and beautiful.

ETA: Fair warning, you will absolutely cry reading it. I'm not a crier and I was crying like a baby.
  • I love love the Violet Eden Chapters by Jessica Shirvington Embrace, Entice, Emblaze, Endless and Empower!! They are young adult and hard to put down!!

I recently finished the first book and just got started on the second this week. I am hooked!
  • I recently finished The Secret Life of Violet Grant by Beatriz Williams. It jumps back and forth between NYC 1964 and Berlin 1914. It's fun and not too serious.

@peachykeen17 I loved that book. It helped me feel more relaxed about the pregnancy and like I was able to make my own informed decisions instead of being scared of doing something wrong.
  • Calendar Girl Series January to December IS AMAZING!!!! I couldn't put it down and read all 12 books in like a week. BHAHA I heard they are making it a TV series soon which I am ecstatic about because it is truly really really good.
  • If you're looking for a book that makes you think, I'm currently reading Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and would recommend that everyone read it. It's a short book and easy to read, but tackles the issue of race in America.
  • I haven't seen a movie in ages and am a big believer in books being better than movies, so I recently read some really great ones: The Martian, The 5th Wave and Enders Game. If you have already seen the movie it might not be as exciting though. but these were all excellent books!
  • I think the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich are a fun read.  I often find myself laughing out loud!  The first one in the series is One for the Money.  They did a movie adaptation that I did not think was very good with Katherine Heigel, as usual, the book was WAY better.

I am currently reading the fourth book in the Game of Thrones series but that might be too heavy.  I do recommend the series though, I am really enjoying it.

  • @HeyBooHey and @jrussell16 all of JoJo Moyes' books are fantastic! I highly recommend The Ship of Brides as well as Me Before You.

  • I'm re-reading the A Song of Ice and Fire series but I recently finish "Station Eleven", which is a post apocalyptic novel, and "The Nightingale", which is about the bravery of two sisters during WW2. Both excellent reads!

  • @earichar23 I'm listening to that on audiobook right now! (I drive a lot for work and since I can't read while driving, audiobooks are the next best thing)
  • Just finished When Breath Becomes Air - great read, finished it in 2 days, but have some Kleenex ready.
  • @peachykeen17 I went with Expecting Better and am loving it so far! I am only up to the first trimester, but I feel like I could have written this book. Her thought process is much like mine (ok, I do not have a doctorate in econmonics, but I tend to be a logical, facts based person). Very relatable.
  • @heyboohey I know, right? I was super excited about this book because I'm the same way, I need the facts! I need to have some control over this whole uncontrollable pregnancy thing. ;) Glad you're enjoying it as much as I am.
  • Mr. Mercedes and Bazaar of Bad Dreams (by SK). Just finished The Choice, gotta have some romcom in there somewhere. I just purchased Expecting Better and Walt Disney's biography has been on my back burner for awhile now. Hard with a 2 year old!

  • Currently listening to Unbroken, and while not lighter fair, is fascinating! Favorite recent light read is definitely "The Royal We." It's essentially a Kate Middleton fanfic - prince falls in love with a regular girl (an American one in this story).  Easy, fun read. Oh, and if you read Gone Girl, try Girl on the Train.

Love, love audiobooks too - I keep "forgetting" to cancel my Audible subscription

This was going to be my exact recommendation for something fun and light.  They're quick reads that also make me laugh out loud, especially the earlier ones.  And I agree about the movie. It was so disappointing.

  • I love to read but find it so hard with a toddler. I'm totally wiped by the end of the day. I'm slowly getting through the Magic Years right now.

LOVE this series! I'd recommend Liane Moriarty and Barbara Delinsky as chick lit authors with some meat. I also love Emily Giffin for light. I'm a fan of the Janet Evanovich books already mentioned, but also Sue Grafton's alphabet mysteries and Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swenson bakery mysteries.
