Non-Stress Tests

Anyone else have to get NST's at this point? Why are you getting them and for how long?

Re: Non-Stress Tests

  • Yep! I started getting monitored for pre-eclampsia 3 weeks ago and got the actual diagnosis 2 weeks ago. After the diagnosis I got sent to L&D for NST and get my bp taken every 15 min for 3 hours. I was hooked up to NST for those 3 hours. Got hooked up to NST at my ob appt at my last check up for 30 min and will get hooked up every appt from here on out at my weekly check ups for about 30 min just to make sure baby is handling the pre-eclampsia well.

  • Lol! Thankfully my wait times haven't been bad at all, but this baby has been super low since the bigger movement started and the NST's definitely bring he or she up higher and I feel WAY more movement than I ever feel without being hooked up. I'm lying there getting totally beat up as the baby is trying it's darnedest to beat this thing off of my stomach lol. A masseuse or manicurist would be super nice!
  • I had two last week while being monitored in the hospital for high blood pressure. I see the MFM tomorrow and will know more about how often I will be having them from here on out. My baby boy is hard to track. They couldn't get a good NST reading the first time so sent me for a BPP.  The first completed NST I had took over an hour because he kept moving positions and they couldn't keep a constant reading.

  • I am getting them weekly- I showed signs of pre-labor a few weeks back so that initiated my first one, but now I am getting them because of the high risk pregnancy associated with my heart condition.
  • I'm getting my first one tomorrow.  Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect? Diagnosed with high bp early on, but it has been controlled with Labetalol and no signs of pre eclampsia.
  • I got my first one this week, due to concern over less movement over the weekend and major cramps. Was supposed to be hooked up for only twenty minutes, but it turned into two hours! Partly because LO was sleeping for the first twenty, and then the doctor was stuck in appointments during the rest of the time and they apparently kept missing her in between patients. My OB said that I'd be getting one at my next appointment as well. Because of the angle I was at, my back & tailbone were super sore by the time I left...am definitely bringing a pillow with me to the next appointment.

  • Going on week 3 and I'm monitored weekly due to GD and HBP.
  • Starting next week I have to have them every Tuesday and Friday.  So that is twice a week.  Have to have them twice a week until baby gets here.

  • I have to have them twice a week starting at 37 weeks because I started the pregnancy with a BMI of 30 (obese by 2 pounds), so this is technically a high risk pregnancy.

@lbachran basically you sit or lay depending on where you're having it done and they strap two monitors to your belly. The hospital also monitored my blood pressure but my doctor didn't. You wait for 20 minutes or so while the machine monitors your contractions (or hopefully lack thereof). My LO beats me up while the machine is on him.
  • I have to get NST's starting at 35-36 weeks because I'm considered AMA (im 36 years old...).  From what I remember from my first pregnancy, they have you lay in a hospital bed hooked up to a fetal heartbeat monitor and another monitor to record contractions.  Every time the baby moves you are suppose to press a button.    I think they just want to make sure the baby's heart rate speeds up and slows down normally (with movement).
I'm actually kind of looking forward to the appointments since I'll get to lay down and watch tv without my kids crawling on me or asking me for something lol.
  • @nerdymama15 why do you need them twice a week?
@lbachran my doc focuses on the baby's hb more than the contractions for my NST. They want to make sure there is nothing abnormal with her hb.
@nbgmom I have been obese for 2 pregnancies now and they don't consider that high risk. At least you won't need too many NST's since they are starting you at 37w!

I accidentally reported you but I love titted it so it should be ok! Sorry!
  • I begin getting them twice a week in two weeks. I am of AMA (37 years old) and had high blood pressure before I was KU. Odd, my BP has been perfect this entire pregnancy. But I also have GD.
  • I'm AMA and I also have GD. I started doing the BPP last week at 31 weeks. Go in 2 weeks to do BPP again and then start NST weekly as well.

B/c of GD or Type 2.  Not sure which since it was not discovered until I was pregnant.  I'm not having any other problems.  I think it is just a precaution.

  • I just had my first NST yesterday (32 weeks, 6 days).  I am having twins and I'll get them once a week until delivery.  I think the whole thing is actually called a 'biophysical profile'.  First I do the NST and then I have a sonogram checking fluid, cord blood flow, etc.

I could see that I really am having contractions on the NST.  I was pretty sure I was - nothing to worry about - uterus is just so stretched now.  I NEVER had contractions or Braxton hicks w/my first two pregnancies.

She told me it increased my risk for late term stillbirth. It's crazy. My BP is fine, my sugars are fine, baby's growth is fine, and I've only gained 9lb. But
like you said, 3 weeks of nst's isn't terrible
  • @mrstmoose, LOL. I think it's fine. I probably would have laughed, especially since we've talked before.

@mslan, thanks for the heads up! They kept me for about an hour in a large, reclining chair. LO wasn't moving very much at first, so they gave me really cold water and then he became super active. He was so active that his heart rate wouldn't come down, so I had to stay until he tired himself out. Now I'll be getting them once a week for the next 2 to 3 weeks.
  • I have my first one next week at 32 weeks and then weekly from then until 39 weeks when I'll be induced. They are monitoring me super close this time because of my stillbirth in July last year.
