Help with dental question

ok so I'm 32wks today! Woo! A few weeks ago I was eating a delicious taco and I cracked a piece of my very back molar off. Yeah the whole corner :(. Well it's been fine. No pain. Up until now. It hurts on and off. Nothing excruciating. Usually just right when I wake up like I'm clenching my teeth in my sleep or something. Should I go get it taken care of or should I wait ? I've been reading a bunch of things online saying the dentist can't really do much for me this far along. I'm not thinking infection since it doesn't hurt constantly. My next dr appointment is on the 29th and of course I'll ask then too if I haven't gone, I just wanted to know if anyone shared this experience ?

Re: Help with dental question

  • I think the main reason they don't recommend dental work in the 3rd tri is because of laying on your back too long.  I had a lot of dental problems a couple months back so I did a lot of research on the subject.  If it's bothering you, call your dentist and see what they think they can do.  You can try waiting it out, especially if Tylenol helps manage the pain, but if a quick temporary fix is possible and then something more permanent after the baby comes, it's worth looking into!

  • That's what I was thinking too. Since it's manageable and hasn't stopped me from eating or anything else I normally do than I could just wait it out. The only thing I'm worried about really is infection because during my research it says that can be more harmful to the baby even now than anything the dentists could do. Thank you for your advice!
  • How far along were you when the issue occurred? My understanding is that 2nd tri is the best for any dental work and that it becomes more of an issue to do anything the further you get into third tri.

Personally, I'd get your dentist to look at ASAP because the problem could get worse and you might be forced to deal with it at a worse time (like right before LO arrives).
  • It happened about 3 months ago actually. And I knew I should've gone to fix it then but with work and planning everything, since it didn't hurt I just neglected to go. I guess as time went on its had its wear and tear and now hurts on and off. But not throughout the day or enough to make me stop what I am doing. I'm 32wks currently so I'm not positive on what my best option is because I feel like I can wait it out if there's no infection as long as things don't progress and I can keep it under control.
  • Same thing happened to me a month ago. I ended up having to have the tooth pulled because it was spreading the infection into my gums.

  • I would at the very least get it checked out by the dentist asap.

  • If it's starting to hurt then you should probably go to the dentist before any infection gets worse. I chipped my tooth 2 months ago, went to the dentist immediately, and they did a temporary filling really fast. I didn't have to get X-rays or lay down for an extended period of time. Maybe you can ask your dentist to do the same for you and then go back in for a more permanent solution after birth.
  • Definitely at least get it looked at. If it's a high risk for infection, you'd want to know that. Dental infections can be nasty and if left untreated it can be a disaster!
  • My husband is graduating from dental school in May, I must agree w/ the advice here- go see your dentist, have it evaluated and talk about your options. More information is always better than less, when you are making decisions like this! Ask if there is something temporary that can be done to 'stabilize' things and make a  follow up appointment for after LO arrives to have your definitive treatment if possible.
  • I'd go to the dentist. It can't hurt, and you don't want it to get infected!

  • same exact thing happened to me tues night!!! it doesnt hurt.. but it is bothersome. my ob told me to get it looked at in the case it could lead to an infection, which can cause lots of harm to the baby. he also said for the dentist to call him before he does any major work or prescribe anything!! i would def talk to your ob and find out what they say... but keeping free from bacteria and infection is #1

  • I had to have a root canal in my first trimester with this one. They can't use certain numbing meds to fix your teeth but it can be done. I need to get a permanent done and I've just not had the time to get it done. I may do it next week actually.

  • I would personally make a call and go to the dentist now (much easier before you have a newborn) so I could get to know my options.
  • I had a filling fall out about two weeks ago and it was causing some sensitivity although it didn't seem like it was exposing too much or would be risky for infection.  My dentist did a temporary filling and added a nice flouride shield beneath the filling.  I will have to of course get it fixed after baby is born.  My understanding is that dentists don't want to give you any type of anesthesia, even if just mild, or put your body in any stress by doing a full filling.  You should definitely talk to the dentist though as it could get worse fast!
  • I'm a dental hygienist and there's no reason you couldn't/shouldn't have dental work done in your 3rd trimester. It may be more uncomfortable to lay back for the appointment, but I'm sure your doctor would do anything they could to make it as comfortable for you as possible. Any anesthetics they need to use are completing safe during pegnancy. I would get it checked out ASAP. It's not going to be easy to go in when you have a newborn either :)
  • Yes, I felt a gap in between my last tooth and the next, but it never hurt. Yesterday it hurt all day, but today, NADA. I wonder what the deal was? I added some of that temporary filling from Walmart. That might have sealed it off for now.
