Pee on the stick or Dip

I saw a commercial on t.v. which got me thinking and curiosity got the best of me. If you took an at home pregnancy test, did you “pee on the stick” or into something & “dip”?

  • I always dip in case I get a faulty test or something and need to retest.

  • simcal18  apparently someone does because the commercial I saw was a pregnancy test that now has a curved handle.  I guess they think ergonomics might sway you.
waterfall213 Me too...and I don't want to pee on my hand.

  • I find the dips to be significantly cheaper and I'm a cheap ass so that's all I use  :D

  • I used the ones where you pee into a cup and use a dropper to put 3 drops of pee in the test well (Walmart cheapos, lol)

  • Same here @TurtleMomma!

Walmart and Dollar Tree were my ish, depending on who had them in stock. After 18 cycles of negatives I couldn't afford a habit like them fancy ergonomic ones. After I got a positive on the Wally version I splurged on some good, name brand tests. What luxury they were to pee on too! Lol

  • I got my BFP on a wondfo which needs to be dipped. Because I didn't believe it, I also dipped 3 other tests (a second wondfo, ept, and an old school FRER). After I realized it was legit, I ran out to get a digi to give DH, so I stashed my pee cup and dipped that when I got home.

If I had just tried to pee on the stick the first time, I would have had to wait around 4 hours to test again.

    So dipping FTW.

  • Wow, I'm surprised dip is winning.  I didn't know that was a thing...seems complicated!  Also, I've never had one not work the first time.
  • the only tests available in Tanzania are dip tests sooooooo.... haha

  • Our first cycle TTC I tried to POS and missed pretty much completely. Apparently, I have terrible aim. It's much easier to catch it in a cup and dip.

  • When I was in college I took a couple and either didn't get enough on them or drenched them. I had to toss them and wait to try again. So now I always dip. I'm not good at the 3 second pee on a stick thing apparently. I'd rather have it in a cup, use my timer to count out the time, and have extra left in case I need to test again. Who knew peeing on a stick could be so difficult for me? Lol

  • I'm surprised too! I always just peed on the thing and was done with it lol

  • Yeah, I'm  surprised too! I just peed once and was done and if I needed to retest  I just did it later or the next day.
  • The answer to this question might depend on how long you spent TTC and whether you're an anxious person or not. If you notice your period is late, take one test, and call for a prenatal appointment, then the kind you pee on is fine. If you're taking several tests every cycle for months, and then a couple every day to make sure the line is getting darker, you want cheapies, which mostly have to be dipped, and you want the option of using several tests with one day's FMU.

  • @duckmay that is very true.  However, with my DD I tried for a year and a half, including two losses, and still never dipped.  However, I never switched to the cheapo tests either, and was able to actually wait and see if I got my period first a lot of the time (very regular).  Don't get me wrong, I about lost my mind trying, but it never crossed my mind to add those extra steps to the process.

So this makes me really curious to know-/for the dippers, did you ever actually get a different response when you dipped a second or third, or tenth test in the same cup???  Or was it mainly to appease your anxiety.

I really hope I'm just reading this wrong.

Do do you mean that every time you've peed on a HPT, it was positive?

ETA: I just saw your response above which answered my question.

To answer your question @gatorMom2014, I went over a year without ever seeing a positive pregnancy test. Ever.

We were on our last natural cycle before we moved to IUI, and I tested on a whim, so when I saw that second line, I didn't believe it. So I dipped in the same cup 4 times after that just to be sure.

  • I also went 14 months TTC before getting my first BFP (And was about to see an RE and start clomid next cycle). I used the first response tests bc I read they're supposed to be more sensitive. But I didn't test every month because I would often start spotting and cramping a day or two beforehand. I also stopped testing early those last couple months bc the emotional fallout was getting to be too much for me. I tested once I missed my period the cycle we finally got our BFP.

I guess I'm just not sure why this thread about pee sticks took a judgmental tone. Or maybe that's just in my imagination.

  • I hope I'm not the one who sounds judgemental--sorry if it came off that way!  I was honestly just curious if there ever ends up being different.  I've definitely done more than one test a few times, but never dipping.  happy weekend!

This rubbed me a bit the wrong way. Congratulations for not lowering yourself to cheap tests like some of us, and having a magical regular cycle.

That's what I took from it too, but I thought I was just being overly sensitive.

glad I'm not the only one.

  • when you have 2 mc and are ttc for 21
months and taking clomid with irregular cycles you go through a load of tests.

im not independently wealthy so I stocked up on wondfos and clearly had to dip for months. also I didn't like peeing on my hand when I started off using regular frer.

Ahhh I see it now.  Sorry my tone came off that way.  It wasn't meant that way, I just didn't trust the cheap tests because I did switch to store brand ovulation predictors, and never got a positive result at all the months I used those (which drove me insane, because while my period is regular, the ovulation date jumps around).  I really didn't mean to start a controversy here.  Thank god we are all past that TTC stage for now, but everyone just does what they need to do to survive without losing their minds I think!

Edit: one more thing.  I realized that I didn't respond to where you highlighted that I said I was actually able to wait--the backstory to that is that for the first 6 months of trying I tested five days early every month, but after what was either a chemical pregnancy or a very early miscarriage, I stopped doing that because I decided emotionally it was better for me to wait until my missed period if possible to avoid having to know about future chemical pregnancies and getting my hopes dashed again.
  • Dipped with LO, but this bean was a magical surprise that I hurried off and got a stick for.
  • After 30+ cycles of negatives, I couldn't even afford to dip anymore. Not to mention how disappointing it was to see negatives cycle after cycle. I started waiting until after my period was due, so when we finally got our BFP, I splurged on the pee on a stick kind.
