Hypothyroid moms

Is there anyone else out there with hypothyroidism? My thyroid went out of balance with my first pregnancy, and has been low ever since. I think we have had my meds about right for a while now. However, lately I've been getting lightheaded, headaches, what feels like maybe heart palpitations or being short of breath.

I don't know if these are just normal, no worries first trimester symptoms or if maybe my meds are off and my thryroid is overactive right now.

I'm six weeks and my first appointment is scheduled in two weeks. Should I just wait and let them draw my blood then or push for an earlier appointment? I am afraid of what impact my thyroid could have on this pregnancy. Thoughts?

Re: Hypothyroid moms

  • I'm not hypothyroid, but I don't have a thyroid - does that count?

More often than not your TSH will increase with pregnancy (making you more hypo) rather than going the other direction. Did your endo give you any recommendations on your meds? Mine told me to double my daily dose twice a week as soon as I got a BFP. It's been holding my thyroid in check so far (I go every two weeks for levels at my own request). I would definitely request bloodwork just to keep an eye on things.

FWIW I've also had dizziness/lightheadeness, headaches and shortness of breath which are unrelated to my thyroid.

  • I do, but my dr said he's leaving it up to the midwife to increase my dosage, since she'll be doing a blood test there's no point in him doing one. I've not had anything like that but I am still exhausted so I have a feeling the mw may up my dose from the 50mg

  • I saw an endocrinologist in 2011 when I suddenly went hyperthyroid for the first time, to rule out any major issues (they ruled out Graves). But then my thyroid balanced out for a few years and I was off meds. Then when I got pregnant (the first time, 2014), I was hypothyroid at my first appt and have been on meds since. However, I never saw an endo again, I'm guessing because it seems pregnancy/hormone induced? I don't know. I guess if it continues all throughout this pregnancy and beyond, it may be good to visit an endocrinologist.

  • I went ahead and called my midwife just to get their thoughts and they want me to come in and get my blood drawn tomorrow just to be safe. So I guess I'll find out soon enough if there's an issue. ☺️
