engagement pain?

hello all! so I was googling because I've been having some lower menstrual type cramps and the pain has been radiating to my thighs which is pretty uncomfortable ! I read this is engagement pain as the baby drops into position and your pelvic bone is spreading. This is my second pregnancy and technically I am only 31 weeks due to measurement but would be 33 weeks with original due date ! anyone else experiencing this?

Re: engagement pain?

  • I started having something similar to this shortly before my last appointment around 31 weeks so the midwife checked the baby's position and as she expected, she was head down and looked like she was getting comfy. However, if you haven't yet, I would still check with your doctor just in case it could be anything else.

  • I just had an ultrasound on Friday and they did say baby was head down so I will check at my appointment on Monday just to make sure!

My doctor told me yesterday that my babys head was very low in my pelvis... which shocked me because I feel a lot of movement up high still and pretty much all over the place. I get two hard lumps up high and both sides of my belly which I assumed were head and butt. I noticed a split second of dull cramping the other day but it was literally gone after a minute and never came back so I'm not sure.

@dsmith211 How did your midwife determine babys position? just by feel or with an ultrasound? All my doctor did yesterday was measure and used his hands pretty firmly and he was saying babys head is in my pelvis and that I probably feel the kicks from her feet. I was just surprised he was able to tell like that. But I guess he's the doctor!

  • I've had a lot of pressure and cramps and my doctor confirmed at my appointment today that she is getting cozy in my pelvis!
  • @kp90 It sounds like your doctor did something like what my midwife did. She checked the heartbeat and based on the position of where she found it said that 'I bet you she's head down'. Sure enough, when she felt around she was able to feel the baby's head in my pelvis. I was pretty amazed they could tell that way too, but I guess they do it all the time so if anyone can tell that way I guess it would be them. :)
  • I've been having a lot of pressure, cramps, pains down low. I had a growth ultrasound last week that confirmed she's head down and low.

@dsmith211 Yeah he also used the Doppler and said something about since her heartbeat was heard below my belly button that also made him think she's head down then he described where her shoulders were. When he said 'deep in my pelvis' I'm thinking... shouldn't I be feeling pain? I guess all this time I felt the bladder kicks recently they're more like head butts to the bladder. Our babies are getting locked and loaded!
  • I'm glad you made this thread because I think this just started for me today too.

Yesterday at the 32-week checkup, my doctor said the tiny alien was starting to move into position but hadn't actually engaged yet. It would be early for that, but not impossibly so, and it would explain the weird pelvic pain and pressure I've been feeling this afternoon.
  • yes, the amount of times I have to pee is getting outrageous along with pressure and head butting from this little dude I've been finding myself grabbing myself and crossing my legs lately as if that will do anything .. lmao
  • I'm glad you asked this; I was actually starting to think I may be having the occasional contraction. Now I'm thinking my cramps are this "engagement pain" you speak of. Baby was head down at my last appointment, so it makes sense that he would be getting into place even more and causing this.

  • I had the same mid week 31. I can't say for sure that it was engagement but my bump dropped(appointment tomorrow), I can breathe again, I've been feeling breathing or thumb sucking way low and I have to pee a lot more.
  • Glad I stumbled upon this! I'm a FTM and I'm somewhere between 32 and 34 weeks (had a due date that would have made me 32 weeks based on measurements on early ultrasounds, but was told to go by my LMP because of his size/position now, which makes me 34 weeks) he has been head down since an appointment 4 weeks ago and recently I have had a cold, lots of coughing and sneezing. Yesterday I started getting way more lightning crotch feelings and I feel like my belly has transformed from a shelf to a saggy beer belly. (Haha if that makes sense) I also kinda feel like he is hanging out right there, and sometimes want to hold the belly up to relieve some of the pressure on my bladder/pelvis. I don't know what any of this means! Guessing it's just getting closer to him being ready to make an appearance.
