Infertility

Here we go again - New RE at Naval Medical Center San Diego

I have been to 2 different RE offices - 1st was Dr. Friedman at UCSD Reproductive Partners. Then she moved to SD Fertility. That clinic was even more expensive by several thousand. So, I started talking to my OBGYN (whom I adore) and she suggested I try and get a referral from my TriCare PCM to the fertility clinic on base. I have been told it can take 3 months just to get an appointment and then the wait is another 3 months to be seen, then IVF is an even longer wait. My PCM was absolutely amazing and he was able to get me in even with no appointments available. So, we have an appointment at the clinic later this month. IVF will be a fraction of what the private practice was going to cost. They use SD Fertility embryology services (ICSI) which is excellent because they have a very good reputation. So, here we go again - still hoping for IVF this summer.

@mandasand I think it took a couple months for me to get in for an appointment. I was able to start treatment within the month (or 2?) of being seen and I got put on the IVF list at that time just in case. I'm really glad I ended up getting on the list since my IUIs didn't end up being successful. Have you got an appointment yet?  I think you will like the doctors and staff there!
Thank you! We initially were unsure about IVF but now we are glad to have another option and another cycle to look forward to.

  • @Tusername my appointment is coming up. I will come prepared with two years worth of infertility testing and treatment. My civilian RE wants us to start IVF right away so I am not sure they will accept me because they have this list...

I have already done my lifetime max of clomid. I have not done IUI but it would not work due to my husband's fertility issues. I was hoping to start this summer so we are okay with a little wait but I'm not sure I can wait a year! If you asked my husband he would be fine waiting a year! He's retired now from the military and is going to law school so if we waited a year that would mean we would have the baby after he was done with school.

  • @mandasand I spoke to a couple ladies in the lobby once that went straight to IVF but I don't ask how long they waited. So maybe you'll get to go straight to getting set up for IVF!

  • @mandasand hello, came across your post and I just want to congratulate you on getting an appointment at the infertility clinic at Balboa.  My husband and I tried getting referred there from Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital back in November and was told that the program was on hold indefinitely.  My husband has since retired from the corps so we just decided to go through a civilian clinic.  Good luck on your journey!
  • Spent half the day at NMCSD yesterday. Met with Dr Tureson and Dr Laufer. I have been on this infertility journey for 2.5 years. We've been seen at two clinics in San Diego. they told me I I have DOR and hubby has asthenoteratozoospermia. We were told we had to go straight to IVF all these years.

At NMCSD the wait for IVF is 11 months but based on my last bloodwork, my numbers aren't THAT bad, I am in the normal range. My last ultrasound still showed follicles in both ovaries that can be stimulated. My husbands sperm has normal volume but some issues with morphology, not the best but certainly not the worst. He said that once they wash the sperm it should provide the best sample and with medication to stimulate my eggs it is worth a try to do IUI while waiting on the the IVF list. Tricare covers everything up to actual IVF procedure, which is done at the clinic I was going to SD Fertility. They do the embryology services, but I will be under the care of Dr Laufer. The cost of IVF is significantly less. SD Fertility charges $13.5k plus meds. With military, it's half that including meds. I was quoted $30k to do IVF with SD Fertility which included the two retrievals and egg banking. I won't be able to do that at Navy Medical. However, the cost is so significantly different I don't think my husband will want to go to the civilian clinic now.

I had had more bloodwork done yesterday. My hubby has to do another semen analysis. We are "in the program" now so just waiting until we want to try IUI. I'm thinking June. I'm still feeling a little sad because I was hoping to do IVF in June but my husband is totally happy, he wanted to wait a year anyway. I am sick of waiting but if IUI works that would be great.

  • Hi all, we retested in March and numbers came back really bad for me. I insisted I retest blood again. Came back better. It freaking happens every time, I'll do bloodwork and it comes back dire, then retest and it comes back fine. Anyway, Dr Laufer still wants me to use donor eggs but said we can try a stim cycle next month (due to my travel schedule this month) and see what happens...I need to stim and see. I just have a feeling. It will be IUI because they won't go straight to IVF. I will have to wait 6 months for IVF. I understand there are people in line before me but I'm annoyed I have to wait...I've already waited 2.5 years. If I wait 6 months it may be too late. But I guess I don't have much choice but to wait since my husband is now set on using the clinic because it's $4k versus $30k at SD Fertility! I need prayers for a miracle right now!

  • @mandasand I totally understand the desire to push on and go to a clinic that can help you faster! And I understand dealing with militarty insurance. I do have to say, I would have waited 6 mths to only have to pay a few grand compared to the almost $20k we are currently at (we are now civvies). I can not see your age (no signatures on my phone) so perhaps you are older than my 33 ( haha, I almost typed 23, I wish!), even still, to not have the financial burden would be a blessing. 6 months seems like forever but in the long run, I promise it will go by pretty quickly!

  • @vssbrm I'm 36, going on 37. Bloodwork indicates low ovarian reserve, pre-ovulation failure so I'm concerned 6 months could be too late. However, husband is on board with IUI in June. He doesn't even want to talk about donor eggs....he said I'm getting ahead of myself. The doctor said even if my numbers are bad, he is willing to try IUI and IVF with me. I think IUI costs around $150 out of pocket, IVF is around $4k and donor egg cycle is $20k.
