Question for those who have/had gestational diabetes

Last week I did the 1 hour glucose tolerance test (fasting), and today I found out I failed by one point. My result was 140, with 139 or less being normal. Now I have to take the lovely 3 hour test and I'm really nervous. Has anyone been diagnosed with GD after no history of it with previous pregnancies? Has anyone ever failed the 1 hour and then passed the 3 hour?

Re: Question for those who have/had gestational diabetes

  • With my first baby I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour. If you only failed the 1 hour test by 1 point, you'll probably pass the 3 hour one.

  • Try not to panic, you might pass your 3 hour no problems. If you do end up with GD it is not that bad and not your fault. I had it with my first. I took it really bad because I eat really well overall and I work out regularly. I had zero risk factors for GD but some how it happened. The first 2 days were emotional for me but I got over it. I was not insulin dependent, my numbers were kept under control with diet and exercise. I didn't have a large baby, she was born at 39+1 and weighed 6lbs 13 oz. She was hypoglycemic when she first came out and that only lasted about 12-18 hours. I was able to nurse her and supplement with a syringe to get her sugar levels back up. She is a healthy 2.5 year old with zero issues and healthy weight. So far at my 3 appts my hemoglobin test and urine tests have been great, so hopefully the consecutive pregnancy wont be any worse. I have to get tested at 22 weeks, so not really that early either.

Yes this is putting the cart before the horse but if you do end up with GD, just ask your OB for a referral (if insurance requires) to a dietitian or nutritionist. They will help you really under stand carbs and starches, how they work and how to counteract them. Dietary fiber can be used to lower the number of carbs in a meal.

Your numbers are just over which is good, mine were similar. I just barely failed the first test. I look at it as a good thing because it might mean you will pass the 3 hour or if you don't pass it, you might be able to control without insulin. You can PM me if you have any questions. Try to stay calm for right now.

  • I didn't have GD last time and I'm not sure about this pregnancy yet but I am a postpartum nurse and a ton of my patients over the years have failed the 1 hour and then passed the 3 hour easily. I agree with PP that if you only failed the 1 hour by 1 point, you have a good chance of passing the 3 hour!

  • When I failed my 1 hr, I found out that something like half of failed 1 hrs end up being fine when they do the three hour. It makes me wonder why they don't just do the 3 hr in the first place.

However, if you do fail, I agree with @Beegey33 . Everything will be fine. I was told GD is the most common pregnancy complication and usually it is controlable with diet and exercise. I had it with my first, and did end up taking Glyburide once a day, which is an oral medicine, for my morning numbers that I couldn't ever get under control (and while they were high, they were never crazy high). Otherwise, everything else was fine in my pregnancy, and DD was born perfectly healthy with no complications. She was 7 lbs 9 oz, so she was not a large baby either.

Regarding diet, I was required to go to a meeting with a dietician and a nurse to understand how to control the GD, and then to check in weekly with the nurse to make sure my numbers were under control. It was pretty much vital in helping understand how to control it.

For now, try not to stress about it. Again, lots of false alarms with the 1 hr tests. Sorry you're dealing with this already.

  • Thanks ladies! Hoping for good results when I go for the 3 hour.
