Bumbo vs FP Sit Me Up

my LO is determined he wants to sit up. But he's like a bull in a china shop and thrashes around in the boppy so it gets pushed out. Was wondering what everyone was using. I've read mixed things about the Bumbo being unsafe and not great for posture development. I just heard about the Sit Me Up.

We have the bumbo. We also have the tray so you can feed LO or just give them a toy to play with. It cleans up well. We don't have the sit me up. It looks very similar to the jumperoo sit we already have. I'm not sure which one is better for development. I would say the sit me up is more for play while the bumbo is more structured and for eating. The only way the bumbo is unsafe is if you leave child unattended on a high surface.

  • Just a word of caution. I purchased the bumbo  floor seat and promptly returned it, because my kid was too fat for it. I may have liked the multi seat better. The floor seat is only for 3-9 months and my kid is large. The multi seat is for 3-36 months I believe.
  • DD uses the bumbo at daycare and will sit in it for a long time. She loves it. We have the FP sit me up at home and she also enjoys that. I think in our case either one would have worked well.

This is true. My first child was too chunky. Her legs would get stuck when trying to take her out. This LO isn't quite as chunky so it works for now. They make a new bumbo now that is a grow with me.

  • We had an infant developmental specialist at new mom group today talk about these.  In her opinion, they're bad bc they don't actually teach your kid how to sit, they just hold them in a sitting position.  They need to feel their weight and balance and work the muscles that keep them from toppling over.

Now, she also had a lot of other things to say that I disagreed with, so take it how you will.  Since I'm trying to find something to replace our bouncer in the kitchen, since kiddo keeps doing baby sit ups in it, I might go for a sit me up bc it looks less structured and might allow for more free movement (kicking etc).  I did find one with a tray:  https://www.walmart.com/ip/39577492?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222228030767341&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=53412496352&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=111827521952&veh=sem

@AmoLovesAud that is the one I just ordered! My cousin had two premie babies and was told by many nurses not to use the bumbo. But then I had another friend who claimed her pedi told her they are fine so I was left in the dark. Decided to go with the sit me up because it offered more free movement, I had never seen a bumbo in person so I went to target to look at one and knew immediately it was not for us.
  • Oh! I like the sit me up with tray! I would agree @angelinthepit23 with you. You will be able to use it for much longer than the bumbo.
  • We have both. The sit me up lets lo lean back and also doesnt seem great for her hips.

We use the bumbo at the dining table. We set lo up with a tray and a toy along w her sippy cup. We do it to make her feel included in dinner and breakfast.  Lo has better posture in it compared to the sit me up.

As far as teaching our daughter to sit upright nothing beats sitting cross legged in front of or behind her and doing it the old fashioned way. Our LO is 4.5months and can now sit unassisted for about 10 seconds...or until distracted.

I have that one! My LO loves it.
  • We have the FP sit me up .... Not the one with the tray (wish I would have seen that one!) but LO loves it. I put it on the table in the kitchen so he can watch me do dishes/cook. We also put him in it at dinner with his spoon to play with while he stares at us eating. Like PP I don't think the posture of the SMP is the best, but it's not like he's in it all day (maybe 10-15 minutes at a time, 3-4 times a day)
  • I purchased the FP Sit Me Up.  It works well and does its job.  I got it before I went on a camping trip with LO because it can store flat and is more easily portable.  I can bring it with me when I go to friends and family.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I love the FP Sit Me Up! That is our favorite by far. Our oldest grew out of the bumbo by 6-7 months because her thighs were too chunky. Hopefully we get more use out of the FP.
  • We have both and he really loves both of them, but lately he seems to be enjoying the bumbo more because he seems to sit more upright. The only thing with the bumbo that I don't like is it's harder to get them in and out if you have a baby with chubby legs.

  • We received both as hand-me-downs and my LO enjoys both.

This is sort of off-topic, but I find it hilarious. The FP sit-me-up tends to induce enormous poops. I don't know if it's because he feels relaxed in the seat, or if it positions his body in a way that's conducive to him letting loose, but... Holy moly. I've been needing to wash the cloth seat multiple times this week.
  • We had the Bumbo at first, but sold it and bought the Sit Me Up.  My daughter always hated the Bumbo and would fuss when in it, but loves the sit me up.  It seems a lot more sturdy, and you can attach toys to it.  I use it on my bathroom floor when I am in the shower.  It does make baby lean back, but I don't have her in it a lot and she still gets plenty of floor time.

  • We love the Sit-Me-Up. I got it because I was concerned about the flat spot he was developing on his head from his swing. It's super portable and comfy. While it doesn't teach them to sit up on their own, it's good for if you need to do something and want them close by and maybe don't want to babywear right then. We practice sitting up on the floor in the evenings.
