Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2 month old wakes every 1-2 hours

My baby has been tough from the start, but his crying and fussiness began after about 3 weeks and has gotten worse. I breastfeed and supplement, and I usually give a big bottle before bed in hopes it will give me a few hours of sleep. However, he still wakes with 1-2 hours no matter what. After paying more attention I've realized it's often gas or spit-ups that cause him to wake. We've tried gas drops, gripe water, and the pediatrician prescribed Zantac for reflux. Has anyone had luck with anything else for gas? I can't keep going on 2 hours of sleep at a time. He's also not a good napper so we need to get sleep time in somewhere!

  • Have you elevated his mattress at the end where his head is? That might help with the spitting and gas

I did try a few times, but it didn't seem to help much. Also a big problem we're having is he doesn't sleep well in his bassinet. So he ends up in bed with us. It's a chain reaction cycle of a mess!

Maybe try a Rock n Play? I've heard those are good for reflux type issues (and really, infant sleep in general) because of the incline. Or maybe a change in bottle type? I think Dr. Brown's are supposed to help with gas but I have no idea it they actually make a difference.

I've been hearing a lot about the Rock n Play, I may have to get one. We switched to Dr. Brown's bottles a couple weeks ago but honestly I don't see much difference since switching to those from Tommee Tippee. My next suspicion is a dairy intolerance, but I've read that only a small portion of babies actually have that, even though it's diagnosed all the time.
  • My 11week old has silent reflux and gas issues, and he was only sleeping 1-2 hours as well.  I noticed a difference in sleep once we got a rock n play.  Also,  similac sensitive formula has helped with both issues tremendously. We now get 3-4 hours which isn't great but it's better than before!
  • At 16w I have to hold my DD for 30-45 mins before I put her down so she can digest. Once I put her down she sometimes gives me 5 hrs lately 4 then up after that quite often(4m sleep regression.
  • Sounds like the Rock n Play is a lifesaver, as a friend gave me the same advice also. I'm on Amazon trying to have one shipped tomorrow. Crossing my fingers for a little sleep soon!

It IS a lifesaver, I'm telling you. Good luck!
  • How many ounces is baby eating during a feeding ?
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • I would also keep talking to your pediatrician. Your situation sounds like exactly what I went through with my second daughter. We ended up trying out three prescriptions before we found the one that worked. Good luck!!
  • If your baby has reflux you should feed him less ounces more often. My daughter also has reflux and I've tried feeding her more to get her to sleep better and it just made her more miserable. Also she doesn't sleep as good laying flat, so I'll either lay her on her side in between a sleep positioner or she sleeps in a rock n play. Also with the zantac, all 3 of my kids were on this and it never helped. My daughter takes .6ml every 8 hours and it hasn't helped. We will be trying another med soon. Have you tried thickening his bottles? I've been putting 3 teaspoons of baby oatmeal in 2 ounces of formula for her, however she has dysphagia and her speech therapist told me to try something called gelmix to thicken her bottles.
  • Hi.... Yes hold upright for awhile before putting down to sleep.... I use pacifier for mine and he usually goes rt bk to bed once awake....I found gas drops made mine worse..... What else.... Hm.... Keep it super dark at night and low key... We also bought an awesome white noise machine from WAlmart... My guy was super gassy!.... Still is a little but it does get better around 2.5 months. Good luck :)
  • Maybe its the formula.. I had the same issue, only with TWINS!  And I breastfeed and supplement as well. My boy would projectile vomit after eating the formulas. And when he slept it was for 1 to 1 1/2 hours at a time, although my girl didn't projectile vomit and she slept a little longer, she'd spit up alot, I mean after every single feeding. After my pediatrician gave me reflux meds that didn't work I decided to figure out the problem on my own. I went through six different types of milk and settled on Enfamil AR (powder) for spit-up for her and Gerber Good Start Soy formula (ready to feed) for him. It sees some babies don't do well on ANY powdered formula. They now both sleep much better, around three to four hours at night. I breast feed during the day and bottle feed only at night.
  • I had the same issues and he's much better now. He sleeps in the rnp, I cut dairy out of my diet (pediatricians advice), and I make sure to thoroughly burp him after every meal all day. He's 7 weeks now and I suspect that a more mature gi tract is the reason he's better, but it's possible these other things helped. Good luck!

When he gets formula, which is usually what I do before bed, he gets 3 ounces. He was eating more but the pediatrician said it was probably too much and could be contributing to him spitting up so much.

I did get a Rock N Play and he immediately started sleeping longer. 5.5 hour stretch the first night! Since then I can usually get one 3-4 hour stretch, which to me is wonderful. I also tried thickening his bottles but he gagged and screamed. I tried it 3 times with 3 different nipple sizes, and he never liked it. He spit most of it back up.

That's wonderful you and him are getting more sleep! The rock n play was a life saver for me too :) the incline definitely helps with reflux babies!
