Birthing hospital closing "ASAP"

Well, this has been so stressful.  I switched doctors at 5 months pregnant so I could birth at a different hospital. I really didn't like my old doctor and I didn't like the culture at the hospital where I was supposed to birth- both have really really high c-section rates.  I love my new doctor and everything was going well. The new hospital is all about evidence based births and is just super mom and baby friendly.  Then the giant conglomerate that owns the hospital decided to close the birthing center "ASAP."  At first they announced on March 1st that the last birth would be March 10th.  There was zero transition plan and it was just a huge mess.  The Department of Health has gotten involved because any end of services has to be approved by the state.  So as of now the hospital has to stay open until the Department of Health approves the closure, and we have literally no clue when that will be.  I have no idea if I'll get to deliver at this hospital that really supports moms' choices, or if I will have to go back to the hospital that loves c-sections and medical interventions.
I'm so stressed about this. I am crying all the time. I know no matter what happens this baby is coming out of me and I should just accept this and deliver wherever I am told I will deliver, but I hate having my choices taken away from me.

  • Can you talk to your new doctor and see what he/she has to say? Maybe they have more info and can give you some peace of mind. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. While not the same thing, my doctor that was supposed to do my repeat c section went on medical leave unexpectedly and won't return when I'm supposed to have a c section. I originally switched to this practice years ago. Now 5 weeks before my c section I'm switched to a different doctor I've never met while researching other doctors. It's different when you get to schedule your c section. I want to know the dr and feel comfortable. So I get your frustration and stress! BUt I'd try talking to your dr and see what they say. If they have an idea of how long it will be open, if they're going to a different hospital. Are there other hospitals you can consider?

  • Unfortunately, my doctor doesn't have any more information than I do.  It's really terrible- everyone is in limbo waiting for the state's decision. She did get credentialed at the other hospital just in case.  It's a 30 day process to get credentialed at a hospital, so when they tried to shut the center down with less than 2 weeks notice it was going to be REALLY bad.  At least I'll be able to follow her to the other hospital now, and I do love her and hated my other doctor. It's just frustrating.
Good luck with your new doctor! I hope he/she works out just fine!
  • Yeah, totally agree with @missnc77. It's ultimately your dr who makes the decision for c-section and as long as your dr has lower c-section rates and agrees to allow a vaginal birth as long as you and baby are doing well and are healthy, I don't see why it matters where you deliver.
  • The different hospitals have dramatically different policies regarding labor.  Also my doctor's backup doctor changes based on the hospital.  So it does really matter. Also if I have to have a c-section, the hospital I planned to deliver has great c-section techniques that are national renowned, and those techniques are explicitly not allowed at the other hospital. (ie husband allowed in the room, skin to skin contact immediately after, delayed chord clamping etc.)

I think there have been one or two other people going through this... @Aquinna82  ?

  • First off....that totally sucks.
Hopefully you have talked or will talk your plan over with your doctor. That should be number one. As for the hospital.....so long as your wishes are within reason then they should be able to accommodate within their best capabilities. You have rights as a patient...do not be afraid to voice them. And I say this as a person who works in a hospital.
  • Not only am I going through this, but I'm 99% positive we're supposed to give birth at the same hospital. Is your dr Dr McGee?

If we're both in RI, then unfortunately it really does matter. If I weren't familiar with the situation I'd question why it matters too since you're keeping your doctor. But since I'm in it, I get it. The other hospitals that are "absorbing" us are extremely different policy-wise. The largest one is completely centered on getting as many babies birthed as possible with little regard to the family. The birthing center is very family focused, holistic, far more relaxed atmosphere, etc.

My dr went through the emergency credential process too before the dept of health stepped in. I'm due May 1st so I'm hoping to still be able to use Memorial.
  • YES! Yes to all of it. It's really heartbreaking.

the techniques you mentioned for the C-section were all things that were allowed at my hospital when I had a c-section almost 4 years ago. Are these not common practices everywhere?? Why wouldn't your husband be allowed in the room???

  • They not common practice at the other hospital unless the csection is scheduled.  If it's not a scheduled csection they don't allow it. I'm pretty sure it is a fear tactic to get mothers to schedule elective csections.
  • I switched at 6 months after a series of events in which I felt more like a "number" than an expectant mom. It's night and day. My dr isn't going to women & infants if they close, he's going to kent.

Are there any other options in the area with L&D? I don't know the details of your doctor/insurance or metro area, but maybe your doctor could get certified at another hospital that is closer to the birthing center atmosphere.

I'm sorry you're going through this. With DS, my doctor went on a short leave a couple weeks before my due date and didn't mention it to me until the week before she left (I think it was at my 37 week appointment). I was devastated and felt really let down that I may have a relative stranger delivering my baby. Fortunately, I was late to deliver and she was back in time, but I was emotional and stressed during that time of uncertainty.

  • To my fellow RI peeps I moved to CT for work right before I got pg. I know finding out if out of state/ innetwork insurance and such might be a pain but I really like DayKimball in CT. Close to the boarder in Putnam so depending where you live it might work. I was worried at first since its a small place but they have a nice birthing center with big rooms and csections recovery rooms have two beds in them one for you and one for hubby. I had to visit once for cramping and other issues and they were all great answering my questions and explained everything they were doing/testing while I was there. Big plus for a ftm The delivering docs are all nice and the nt/specialist guy is great. Its funny I was so set against a male ob/delivering doc but I kinda hope hes on call that night lol. His bedside manner is fantastic, informative but laid back/funny
