Well, this has been so stressful. I switched doctors at 5 months pregnant so I could birth at a different hospital. I really didn't like my old doctor and I didn't like the culture at the hospital where I was supposed to birth- both have really really high c-section rates. I love my new doctor and everything was going well. The new hospital is all about evidence based births and is just super mom and baby friendly. Then the giant conglomerate that owns the hospital decided to close the birthing center "ASAP." At first they announced on March 1st that the last birth would be March 10th. There was zero transition plan and it was just a huge mess. The Department of Health has gotten involved because any end of services has to be approved by the state. So as of now the hospital has to stay open until the Department of Health approves the closure, and we have literally no clue when that will be. I have no idea if I'll get to deliver at this hospital that really supports moms' choices, or if I will have to go back to the hospital that loves c-sections and medical interventions.
I'm so stressed about this. I am crying all the time. I know no matter what happens this baby is coming out of me and I should just accept this and deliver wherever I am told I will deliver, but I hate having my choices taken away from me.
Re: Birthing hospital closing "ASAP"
Good luck with your new doctor! I hope he/she works out just fine!
Hopefully you have talked or will talk your plan over with your doctor. That should be number one. As for the hospital.....so long as your wishes are within reason then they should be able to accommodate within their best capabilities. You have rights as a patient...do not be afraid to voice them. And I say this as a person who works in a hospital.
If we're both in RI, then unfortunately it really does matter. If I weren't familiar with the situation I'd question why it matters too since you're keeping your doctor. But since I'm in it, I get it. The other hospitals that are "absorbing" us are extremely different policy-wise. The largest one is completely centered on getting as many babies birthed as possible with little regard to the family. The birthing center is very family focused, holistic, far more relaxed atmosphere, etc.
My dr went through the emergency credential process too before the dept of health stepped in. I'm due May 1st so I'm hoping to still be able to use Memorial.

I'm sorry you're going through this. With DS, my doctor went on a short leave a couple weeks before my due date and didn't mention it to me until the week before she left (I think it was at my 37 week appointment). I was devastated and felt really let down that I may have a relative stranger delivering my baby. Fortunately, I was late to deliver and she was back in time, but I was emotional and stressed during that time of uncertainty.
