Working out/jogging?

hi guys!

So I am currently 10weeks and a few days along! I was in pretty good shape before getting pregnant but my morning/all day sickness and exhaustion have caused me to workout 2-3 times a week if I'm lucky. Before I found out I was pregnant I actually did Crossfit 3 times a week and ran or walked at least one other day. I really want to start jogging again now that I'm having some energy but I'm worried about hurting the baby? Any advice?

I dont see see my Dr again for a two weeks.

Re: Working out/jogging?

  • Do it! Start small and work your way back up to where you're comfortable.
I haven't ever done CrossFit so I don't have advice on that. I run though and I have been continuing to run without problem. I probably wouldn't start a brand new type of workout. For example, it may be fine for you to add some crossfit, but I have never done it so I'm not going to start.
Exercise is great and usually encouraged by your doctor. Just do what feels good.

  • Definitely run if it feels good and you want to! I was coming off marathon training when I got pregnant with my first, so I kept a pretty active running schedule with my first. This time around, I haven't been running much lately, so I've been swimming laps when I want to get a work out in. Moderate activity is great for you!  Just make sure you stay hydrated!

  • Definitely ask your doctor, but I think the consensus now is that exercise is good for pregnant women.  It might even make labor easier.  My doctor told me to continue my current routine for as long as it's comfortable.  Last pregnancy I was able to run until about 32 or 33 weeks and then my belly got too big to make that comfortable.  But listen to your body.  Do what feels good.  If it feels like too much, stop immediately.
  • My doctor said exercise was fine as long as my heart rate didn't go above 140. That might've been advice specially tailored to me, but maybe wearing a heart rate monitor/fitness tracker would help?

  • My doctor said any exercise that I was used to (with the exception of hot yoga) was fine to continue.

  • My OB encouraged me exercise regularly. I used to run, but I've felt so horrible this first trimester that I haven't done anything but walk the dog. I have run all of ONCE. I'm hoping to get back to it once this horrible morning sickness lifts... Hopefully soon. I'll try not to push too hard and listen to my body, though.

  • I might be weird, but running is the only time I don't feel nauseated.  I feel sick when I wake up, I go down and run on the treadmill and feel great while I'm running and for about an hour later, then I feel sick for the rest of the day.
  • Do it. I was pretty uncomfortable jumping and bouncing with my first, so I just walked and swam. But I know plenty of women who jog their whole pregnancy. Do what makes you feel good and don't overdo it. Labor is like a marathon, so good fitness will help you get through it!
  • I agree with PP and I will add my OB said all things are fine as long as you aren't trying something extreme or new and are avoiding obvious high risk activities. Basically she said if I feel dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseated, stop what I'm doing.
  • Thanks ladies! You made me feel so much better. I am gna start jogging again and I love to swim so I think starting that again will be great! This is my first pregnancy so I appreciate all the advice
  • I go to a personal trainer 3x a week and run and lift weights with my husband 3 other days and have been continuing as my Dr said I do not need to change anything at all just listen to my body. She said if you did it before you got pregnant you can continue. Also I asked about the 140 heart rate as I read it online and she said NOPE just continue what you've been doing and drink plenty of water and I am at 8 weeks now and doing exactly the same thing. :)
  • My morning sickness and vertigo has been so bad that just remaining upright has been a workout for me. If I was able to get the gym 2-3 times a week I would count that as a win, not a fail. That's just my personal feelings though. Everyone is different.
