Re: weekly health/fitness check in (3/21)

  • Fitness goal? Walk every day at lunch.

Health goal? More vegetables. Dinners still aren’t happening because my nausea hits in the evenings.

Challenges you’re facing this week? I will be out of town this weekend for a wedding which means no Saturday yoga and lots of delicious food that I hope I can eat. On that note, I am still not eating well because of nausea and food aversions. I am so close to the 2nd trimester so I am hoping it gets better soon!

GTKY: What sport or activity were you involved in growing up and do you hope to pass along that interest to your little one? I was a gymnast forever. I don’t think I want any future child to be a gymnast because it wrecked havoc on my body. Also, I don’t know how my parents watched me flip on a 4-inch piece of wood! However, I would rather my child be active and involved in something so if gymnastics is what she chooses, I will see where it goes.

  • Fitness goal?  I have a very challenging hike I want to do before I get bigger.  I plan to do it this Saturday if weather cooperates

Health goal?   1775 calories every day. Gained 10 already (12w 2 days in) so need to control eating to slow down a little.   Lots of fiber and fruits and vegetables less ice cream and empty carbs

Challenges?   Avoiding making bad food choices.  I have some energy finally so workouts are going a lot better

GTKY: Sport I would like to pass down?  Dance

Fitness goal? Make it to all my regular classes and run some.

Health goal? As always, eat more veggies.

Challenges you’re facing this week? This is more of a rant than a challenge... My Zumba class for tonight is cancelled. I look forward to Zumba all week and they cancelled it for a stupid new class launch. I've had a super crappy day and I really needed to shake my blues away, so I called the gym to complain and they didn't care in the slightest. Ugh. This day.

GTKY: What sport or activity were you involved in growing up and do you hope to pass along that interest to your little one? Definitely dance, although my husband wants them to play basketball. I guess they can do both!

  • Fitness goal? Keep up the current routine.  Exercise is going well for me since it's the only thing that makes the nausea go away.

Health goal? Like others, more vegetables.  The only vegetable that sounds good to me is iceberg lettuce and that isn't very nutritious.

Challenges you’re facing this week? I'm having a hard time getting out to walk with my toddler.  Before I was pregnant, we were very active, getting out for a walk (at least) every day.  Now, I run in the morning, but by the time I've showered and prepared and eaten breakfast, I just want to sit in the house for the rest of the day.

GTKY: What sport or activity were you involved in growing up and do you hope to pass along that interest to your little one? I'm a fan of team sports.  I played (poorly) baseball, basketball and volleyball in elementary school (before you had to have any skills to make the team) and I think that taught me a lot about teamwork.  My husband practiced karate for many years, so we'll probably want to get the kids involved in that AND any team sport in which they show interest.

  • Fitness goal? - I've been a disgrace you guys.  I was completely zapped of energy last week every time I'd come home from work.... Also because of the time change, I wasn't waking up to be able to work out in the mornings before work..... and my lunch breaks have been nap breaks.  :(  I've started feeling much better though, and hope to make it to TWO workout classes this week.  Tuesday TRX and Thursday Barre.

Health goal? - Eat more veggies!!!

Challenges you’re facing this week? - In-laws are coming to town.... that means no evening workouts, just morning ones or lunch break ones.  This is gonna be tough!

GTKY: What sport or activity were you involved in growing up and do you hope to pass along that interest to your little one? - Want my little one to be actively involved in theater.  If not theater, swimming!

  • Fitness goal: nothing much on the horizon for me because I injured myself at work so I gotta take it easy. I guess my goal could be to take a few small walks with the toddler.

Health goal: reign in my eating and start making healthier choices. Easier said than done when I make a delicious-looking healthy chicken dinner in the crock pot and, come dinner time, it suddenly looks repugnant. Double cheeseburger, anyone?

Challenges: This stupid work injury holding me back! I'm so damn irritated but I have to heal and going to the gym is not in my best interest.

GTKY: I played soccer from the time I was 4 till I was 18. If DS or LO want to play, I'd be fine with it. If they don't want to play soccer but find joy in another sport or activity, great!

  • Fitness goal?  Keep up the usual workouts (yoga or elliptical) as often as possible, at least 4 days this week. And walk the dogs on off days.  Also, I really want to find a good prenatal workout on youtube or buy a DVD.  Any suggestions?  I enjoy barre, yoga, and pilates.  I'm thinking about getting the pure barre pretnatal DVD or fusion bump DVD since I've done both workouts and I know they're good.  But it's like $20 for one workout on a DVD so I'm being indecisive.

Health goal?  Incorporate as much veggies and proteins as possible.  My taste buds seem pretty normal this week and I've actually been organized with meal planning.  I need to incorporate more healthy snacks.  I really love the skinny pop, but I think the salt is contributing to my massive bloating.

Challenges you’re facing this week?  Fatigue is getting better, but still hits me unexpectedly and it can be hard to motivate myself to drive to the gym if I'm fatigued at the end of the workday.

GTKY: What sport or activity were you involved in growing up and do you hope to pass along that interest to your little one?  I did gymnastics and dance and loved both.  But really I would like my kids to have more variety of sports/activity experience.  I was a shy kid and never took the initiative to try any sports.  I wish my parents would've just signed me up for a bunch of different things to see how it went.  By the time I got interested in team sports, I felt like everyone had been doing them forever and I would be way behind (not true, I was only 9 lol).

  • Fitness goal? Get to all of my classes this week. So far, one down two to go.

Health goal? As usual, try to eat something besides cheese and carbs. I had most of a berry smoothie for breakfast, so that was good.

Challenges you’re facing this week? This whole trimester has been a challenge. Before, I was doing intense boot camps twice a week along with some other classes, and was about to start training for a June half-marathon. Nutrition? I was awesome at it. Now, if I can make it to one relatively low-intensity cardio class and give decent effort it's a win. Have I mentioned how much I am looking forward to not feeling like crap 95% of the time? It's such a change from what I'm used to. I dropped that half to a 10k and I plan on doing it, even if I walk it - as long as my body gets the memo. It's just so frustrating. Worth it, of course, but frustrating none the less, especially since when I can get to the gym I feel great afterwards. ANYhoo, sorry for rambling.

GTKY: What sport or activity were you involved in growing up and do you hope to pass along that interest to your little one? Ballet and baseball, and I do hope s/he wants to try one or both. But I'm not forcing it. If they want to do ice skating or ice hockey I might try to change their minds because I'm not about sitting in a freezing cold rink for hours. Or my husband can be in charge of that. The cold is not my friend.

  • Okay I have to admit before getting BFP I was an overweight lazy lady that lives off of fast food.  Now that I'm pregnant, I am terrified of gaining enough weight to top the scales into the next 100 level, so I am trying to be mindful of that, and someone on the board recommended I post here cause you ladies are awesome, so here I go.

Fitness Goal? to start something, anything! I've gotten tired and lazy with taking the dog for walks in the evening and she loves them, so I'm going to try to start that up again, even if they're only 10 minutes right now.

Health Goal? Trying to have at least 1 healthy meal a day.  For some reason my body isn't letting me snack (I try to snack, doesn't matter if it's healthy or not, I find myself sick within the hour) - so I'm eating 3 solid meals a day and that's it.

Challenges this week? My city is calling for an extreme freezing rain storm this week, expecting to last 48 hours, which is going to make it a pain to get out.  Plus weather like this causes me migraines and I'm still exhausted so really I just want the double cheeseburger @TurtleMomma mentioned then go to bed.

GTKY - Hubby was a professional lacrosse player but funny enough he doesn't want our LO playing that because there is absolutely no money in it and it destroys the body.  He wants hockey (second job anyone??) but I don't really care, as long as they are involved in some activities. When I was doing sports in elementary, I loved it, then I got to high school and felt I couldn't balance it all (excuses) and then packed on the weight and laziness, even though I do play softball now (putting it on hold this season), I know I would be so much better if I stayed fit.

  • @LauraPCOS First, welcome. Second, don't get down on yourself for what you did or didn't do in the past.

And third, I'm just some lady, not a medical or fitness professional so YMMV here of course, but this is what I've learned over the years that was helpful: Focus on what you want to change now and take steps to do it, even if they are small steps. I know it's the world's biggest cliché, but they really do add up. Like you mentioned, maybe it's walking the dog an extra block, or an extra 15 minutes, and then maybe the next week it's an extra two blocks or extra 25 minutes. Whatever it is. Maybe it's having fruit as a snack instead of Cheez-its 3 days a week, then eventually every day it's fruit (not that that is an example directly from my life or anything. ) Whatever works for you. And from your comments, clearly you get that, which is so important. Doing everything all at once, or making sweeping changes can be overwhelming, and frustrating, plus you're growing a baby on top of it!

And, as I am learning, this first trimester is a MFer. So if you're really sick, or really tired, don't feel bad about resting (again, easier said than done maybe, but still.)

Bottom line: You can do it! Go you!

  • Fitness Goal? Let's be honest, if I walk to the park with dd this week I'd be proud of myself.  I have totally failed at health and fitness so far, but I'm going to keep posting weekly bc once I feel better, I'll be back at it dammit! ;)  My problem is during dd's waking hours I'm nauseous almost all the time.  Around her nap time is when I usually feel my best for the day, but I can't get to the gym.  I guess I could do at home workout dvd's, but meh.
If this morning sickness lasts too much longer maybe I'll look into at home workouts.  I just bought some cute maternity clothes and I don't want to feel fluffy in them as this pregnancy progresses.

Health Goal? Homemade egg mcmuffins rather than McDonalds.  I have lofty goals, friends.  Other than that, I want to try to add smoothies in for a mid-day snack rather than relying on carbs or less than nutritious stuff.

Challenges this week? The nausea and vomiting, always.  And also, I feel like I'm already losing my wind a bit...it seems early for that.  Hopefully once I'm feeling up to the gym working out regularly will help that some.  Time will tell.

GTKY - I've actually thought about this a lot because I wasn't in any sports growing up, and I think if I had been it might have kept me out of some trouble in high school.  I've thought about something to put dd in that she'd be interested in, but I don't want to force it either.  Maybe something like gymnastics while she's young?  She's very tall for her age, so as she gets older, who knows?  Basketball or soccer or volleyball?  Whatever makes her happy, same with baby.  But I do want them both to be involved in something.
