Hypnobirthing app recommendations?

I'm not going for an unmedicated birth (bring on the epi!), but I have been doing some reading about hypnobirthing, and I'm intrigued. I've mentioned before that I hemorrhaged after my first was delivered, and it was incredibly traumatic. Because of my history, I know preventive steps will be taken in my delivery, and I have a friend who had an easy delivery after hemorrhage, but I'm still a bit anxious about the possibility of it happening again, and I wonder if some of the fear-mitigating techniques of hypnobirthing might not help me out with that. If I intended to commit to a med-free experience, I probably would seek out a full hypnobirthing course, but since it's more of a casual interest, I'm wondering if anyone is using a mobile app they really like? Someone mentioned one in a thread months and months ago, but not by name (just that the logo was pink, which doesn't narrow it down, and which could have changed since then). There are a few in the iTunes store, but none of them have a ton of reviews. Anyone have a recommendation?

Re: Hypnobirthing app recommendations?

  • I'd recommend listening to the "fear free childbirth podcasts". Some of them are a bit out there and hippy dippy, but I've learned a lot about the whole process, as well as how you can break down specific fears and find ways to deal with them. It might work for you better than hypno birthing, which is more focused on creating a general anesthetic.

That said, I've been using the app you've mentioned (the hypno birth portion was on sale not long ago) and while it's very calming (they nearly always put me to sleep) idk how effective they really are for pain management. FTM, so I guess I'll find out.

  • Look into your library, some of them have books along with CDs for home hypnobirth study.

I I listen to the hypnobirthing hub podcast and I like it.
  • I would read the hypnobirthing book by Marie Mongan. It's what they give out in the classes and its super informative.  Helped to ease my fears and now DH has stated reading it!
  • Thanks, all!

  • Hey gals. This is the one that I purchased when expecting DS a few years ago. It may have been $5 at the time, I can't remember. There are a few tracks to listen to. We listen to the sleep track nightly at this point and will probably continue to do it until baby #2 arrives. We also took a hyponobirthing class the first time around and used the visualizations that we learned in the class in addition to the app. Hope this helps!

That's the one I have been using as well. While I can't tell if the hypno-anesthesia is working or not, it is very calming and usually puts me to sleep. If nothing else, it's a good sleep aid.

  • @MynaBird there is a selection in the Google play store. I have downloaded the free options and am going to check them out. I'll report back!

I have also located a hypnobabies class local to me but it's  $500 and I'm not sure if I buy into self hypnosis. ... I guess the apps might be a good gateway drug
  • @gauge1234 That's pretty much what I was thinking! Let us know if you find anything great. I downloaded the one recommended above and will give it a try.

  • I listened to the "sleep track" in the hypnobirthing app for the first time last night -- was anyone else thrown off by the line when they direct you to visualize the weight coming off easily after the baby is born?! And to think about how impressed everyone will be by your quick recovery? I was totally distracted by that -- it actually kept me awake thinking about how weird it was.

There's a lot of that super positive and weird stuff. In mine there is a line that says "imagine your baby coming through tissues that are pink and healthy." Thanks for the description of my lady bits.  Lol. Gets me every time but luckily it's not the sleep/relax one.  It's the affirmations so I'm allowed to giggle at it.

I've yet to stay awake/conscious during one, so I'll have to try to keep an ear out for these.

  • I was irritated by the weight loss/recovery part. I thought the point was to prepare me for birth, not fire me up for postpartum weight loss!

I'm probably unnecessarily hung up on it and should just let it go. I have a history of bulimia and spent a lot of time and money on treatment, so I tend to be hypersensitive to weight loss messages.

  • Some of the affirmations are so weird! I can't take them seriously. My affirmations are going to be along the lines of "there is sushi at the end of the tunnel". But maybe even less cheesy than that. I'm giving my DH a notebook of things I'd like him to remind me of when I feel like giving up, like how I'll be able to have sushi again, champagne, how HE will get to take over baby duty, etc. Will it help? Who knows, but it's a lot better than reminding myself to have a soft bottom and other weird hippy stuff.
