Choroid Plexus Cyst

So last Tuesday had my first ultrasound also my anatomy scan and found out we are expecting a boy! We were so excited and went to the doctor afterwards. We were told there all of u/s wasn't ready yet and that they would call if any concerns were seen. Today I got a call saying that they found one small choroid plexus cyst on baby's head. The nurse reassured me that the doctor wasn't concerned and said this is common and it will most likely resolve itself by next u/s which they scheduled for may 11th. I was 20 weeks yesterday and was told last week was my window for the genetic testing and we opted out due to me being 24, no family history, etc and doctor said he doesn't generally recommend due to false negatives. Since I got the call it's all I can think about and it's such a long wait to find out if it does clear up... anyone else been through this??

  • I wouldn't worry.  It is normal.  The only time there is usually cause for concern is if there is more than one soft marker.  A cyst can be a soft marker, but is usually present with other soft markers.  My daughter had one and it resolved before birth.  You can maybe try for genetic testing, but honestly your risks are probably low.  If this is going to bother you get the testing so you can enjoy your pregnancy.  Sending positive thoughts.
  • It's definitely common. We saw a couple with my son at our a/s at 18+3. We had to go for a follow up a few weeks later to get better pics of his heart because they couldn't get good shots at the a/s and they were already resolved. He's just fine and will be two next month.

I know not worrying is easier said than done, but more often than not, they're nothing to worry about.

  • I had this with my first pregnancy, and she was and is completely healthy.  In fact, the doctor explained that many of us might be walking around with these cysts in adulthood and it doesn't mean anything, but that ultrasound technology is so advanced that we are able to see them.

I think I also have it with this pregnancy as I saw the US tech measuring something last week and indicating CHOR PLEX on the screen but I have not seen my doctor since the US so I am not sure.  I did some more reading up on it and it seems there is some disagreement about whether these should even be mentioned to patients in the absence of any other markers.

So yes, it is nothing to worry about if that is the only thing they found.
  • As everyone else has said, very common and nothing to be concerned about.. Especially if that's all they found. With my oldest, I think they had found 1 or 2 and they were already gone by the next week at my ultrasound. And I actually had 3 things that could be considered soft markers (the cysts, IUGR, and dilated kidney). Even with all of that the specialist still didn't think it was anything chromosomal.. And he was right!
  • My daughter had 2 huge ones and they were gone by 23 weeks. She is perfectly healthy!

  • A coworker of mine had one of those turn up on his daughter's anatomy scan last year. Turns out it resolved and she was/is perfectly healthy! I agree that they shouldn't necessarily mention them unless there are other markers. A lot of the time, people hear "cyst" and you might as well say "tumor". Trust in your healthcare team - if they aren't concerned, I wouldn't be.
  • Deep breaths!  I had this exact same thing with both of my girls.  They did the scan at 20 weeks and both times this came up in the ultrasound. I FREAKED and turned to google.  Bad decision.  So, if you are like me, walk away!!!  I freaked so bad that they did the maternity 21 because I just could not wait 4 weeks to go back.  Those results were fine and she was perfect at the 24 week scan.  It will be fine!  I am sure!
  • This board hasn't been used in a while but oh well! At my anatomy scan yesterday they also found a choroid plexus cyst and I was so bummed. Our doctor said that in all her years every choroid plexus cyst she's seen turned out to be nothing. Regardless I am having a level 2 ultrasound next week and we are excited about getting to see our little girl again so soon!
