Good Pregnant Eats

I cooked and ate the most delicious steak last night, every mouthful was amazing, I felt so satisfied and lovely...until I realised, should I even be eating steak? In the UK we don't see a midwife until 9 weeks so I am unsure what the rules are when it comes to earing during pregnancy!

Are there any guides out there what you can and can't eat?

We should get a little list started :)

Re: Good Pregnant Eats

  • I think it's alright as long as your not eating it blue rare. I do mine medium while I'm pregnant!

  • Well cooked (not necessarily well done) steak from a reputable place, or cooked safely at home is perfectly fine! Many people will say steaks should be well done, but it's really your comfort level that will dictate how you cook it...personally I'd be fine eating a medium steak from a reputable place, but I don't trust myself to cook it since I'm terrible at cooking steaks for some reason haha

  • You can easily google to find a list :) They will vary by how conservative a doctor is. Some things some doctors are ok with with, and others aren't (like deli meat)

  • Agree with Google search and use a keen eye with your search.  Not all lists are created equal or backed by professional research or opinion, and remember that some are geared toward poorly informed consumers where blanket recommendations may be more appropriate.

I was THRILLED to find out that fresh sushi also from a reputable place is also ok.  Many are still not comfortable with eating it even then, so sometimes it will still come down to personal preference.  I also just discovered pasteurized eggs this week.  A lot of lists don't cover those gems.

  • I had a delicious steak Saturday night and ate steak all during my last prengnacy.  I'll eat it medium rare - medium.  From what I've read, because it's not ground meat, as long as the outside (where the bacteria is) is fully cooked then you're ok.  All ground meat should be thoroughly cooked through (which I do abide by but is also a bummer because I like my hambergs on the medium side as well).  I also agreed with @comealongponds that is really a personal comfort level.  I know people that ate deli meat their entire pregnancy but I've decided that is something I'm not going to do (I don't eat it that much anyways).  I also eat any cheese that is pasturized whether it is a hard or soft cheese.  As long as it's pasturized it's ok in my book.

  • I was super bummed about the no soft cheeses thing cause their is this goat cheese called Purple Haze that I crave when I'm not pregnant so I knew I'd be craving it while I am pregnant.  I googled it, as long as the cheese is made with pasteurized milk it's fine.  My cheese is so I will definitely indulge.

I've been obsessed with these amazing salads our local Greek restaurant makes... It's technically a chicken cesaer salad, but I get it with ranch instead... whatever they do to grill the chicken is like a food-gasm I swear...
