Group B Strep?

Do any RCS mamas know if their OB will have them do a group B strep? I'm just wondering because the whole point of it is for a vaginal delivery to make sure baby doesn't get it. If you know you're having a CS do you need it? I'm hoping the answer is no.

Re: Group B Strep?

  • I still had to get it, and since my water broke before my cs last time, I needed to get IV antibiotics to be sure that DS didn't get it.

  • I'm having a RCS and I have to do the swab test.

Yes they still test you for it. DD was a planned c/s and I had to do it for her.

  • It's a really simple swab and I would imagine they would rather know just in case.
  • Thanks for the answers. I just had a baby last May so I know I have to have a CS as it hasn't been a year since my last one. Having the swab done isn't the worst thing in the world, but getting into the stirrups really hurts my hips so I was hoping to avoid it.

Were you positive with your first? I tested positive with my first, and then when I had my second I declined the swab and was just treated as positive again. I'm going to do the swab this time around though.
  • I know of some doctors that would skip the test for a RCS, but my OB isn't one of them.
I'd love to see a study of these babies and whether or not their mom's water breaks before the c/s.  It prob won't be done - but interesting!

  • No, I was negative last time. I have an appointment Thursday and I'll ask about this time.

  • I was positive last time and I hated being tied up to an IV. Ended up as a c-section anyway. Found this resource through my doula (https://wellnessmama.com/8680/avoid-gbs/) and I'm going to try some of the less extreme things - vitamin c, probiotics, and garlic supplements. It can't hurt and it would be nice to not test positive again!

Pretty sure none of those things are going to help you avoid it...but hey it can't hurt to try, that's true.
  • Wellness Mama is amazing! If ANY bump mamas are interested in trying out alternative/natural stuff with the rest of their pregnant or kids then check out this lady! That was where I found that I could use chlorella to pump up my iron and improve my clotting factors and spray magnesium oil on my body to help my body manufacture tissues both for my growing baby and for myself post partum!
  • When should we be tested for this?

  • How invasive the the swab in the anus? I am getting nervous for my appointment next Monday
  • @wsgjmw1 it depends on the doctor. Some insert (though not very far) and some only wipe around the outside.
  •  :o I thought it was a vaginal swab...
  • Had mine done today and they just swabbed the outside of the anus no insertion or anything.  Barely felt it at all.
  • I have my rcs scheduled for 4/28 and I have to get this test done on Wednesday.  My dr said they like to do it because if you dilate to a two (which is very common to dilate a cm or two and not even know) the baby can still get some of the bacteria.  Better safe than sorry even though I feel so self conscious about this test.  Just seems so invasive lol

  • I just had it done today...pretty sure it's less invasive than a c-section ;) It really wasn't that bad.
  • I got mine done Thursday because I was in the hospital for dilation. It was no big deal at all; they barely swab the b-hole tissue.
  • I had a CS last time and will this time and still have to have a strep B test.

When I worked in an OBGYN clinic... we tested everyone no matter what the birth method was planned to be and my doctors did not insert anything.. just a simple/quick swab in that area front to back. Takes all of two seconds.
  • I asked at my appt today...my section is scheduled for May 9th.  She said everyone still gets a gbs swab.  She said the pediatricians often want to double check that gbs wasn't the reason if an infection pops up.

  • So I had a + urine culture for GBS (they lost my results from an earlier UA so it was recently re-done) since it's +, they will skip the swab and just treat at L&D w/antibx (since I'm currently asymptotic) as per CDC protocol....
