Herniated belly button

At about 4 weeks, DSs belly button started to pop out. At his 8 week check, I had his dr check it out. She said its herniated but they're not worried until 6months. Google just makes me freak out and the dr said to do nothing, even when I said it looks like it will burst sometimes. She said it happens but not likely. I just hate waiting. He's now 11 weeks and I keep pushing it back in. Does anyone have any knowledge of what happens next or what I can do in the meantime?

Re: Herniated belly button

  • Maybe tape a gauze pad over his belly button? I tried to research and it says it's not needed but if it bugs you then it's ok

  • My husband has had one for years and it hasn't caused any issues it just looks weird. Dr said he can have surgery but he hasn't.
  • My 3 yr old DS had one that occurred at a similar age to your son. We had it checked out by a surgeon - about 10% of babies get them. The pediatrician and the surgeon both said that his hernia was too small to repair. They expected it to go back in once his abdominal muscles started to get stronger. Sure enough when he was ~12 months, it started receding. It was recommended to us to do nothing. Diaper over it as a normal diaper would be. His belly button looks slightly different now, but you really need to look for it. We thought my DD was going to have this (higher chance when a sibling has one), but so far no problems with hers. Best wishes to your DS!
  • My LO has one. I was really worried about it too but the pediatrician said that they will usually grow out of it. The ped also said to leave it alone.

Mine too. He got it as a teenager and it's been about 15 years with no problems.
  • It's so hard to have nothing to do but wait. Sometimes it sticks out like a finger!! Babies are just scary little beings. My daughter was so simple. Lol

  • DS has one and we're just going to watch it and hopefully, his stomach muscles will fit the issue over time. If not, he'll need surgery at 3 years old.
Our ped said just to watch it, make sure we can push it in at every diaper change, and if we can't or it looks like it pains him to call immediately.
  • I had a herniated belly button at birth.  When I was in the 3rd grade, I ended up having surgery on it. I'm not sure if they now do the surgery sooner.  Basically the Dr. made my belly button into an innie.  It was an in/out surgery.  I didn't have to spend any time in the hospital other than a few hours for recovery so the sleeping gas could wear off.  I was out of school for a week I think. I've never had any issues with it and the scar is really small.

Not that this matters in your situation because you have a son, but when I became pregnant I asked my Dr. if that surgery would/could result in any sort of complications or anything. He said no, the growth of the baby and stretching of my belly wouldn't be an issue at all.

My pedi said to push it in too. She never said what to do if we can't. That makes sense though, the muscles would have closed around it. I keep researching it. He doesn't seem to care what I do to him.

We were told they are pretty common with preemies. His is actually already looming a lot better and doesn't stick out as much.
  • My LO had one at birth and slowly but surely it went away
  • His is starting to look a little better so I'm sure it's going away now. I just hate that it was there and at the time, looked so painful. Thanks ladies

  • My DD had one and it just went away on to own. It never bothered her.
