when to stop medication

I take medicine for a stomach disorder that would need to be stopped if I was pregnant. The medicine is called amitiza. This medicine helps me to be able to go to work and function normally. There's a good chance I could be pregnant because I had sex two days ago and yesterday morning I felt ovulation pain in my ovary. So does anyone know when the  egg implants and at what point medicine would affect a pregnancy?

Re: when to stop medication

  • Until you get that positive pee stick (which, BTW, do not post a picture on TB unless its on the "What does a positive pregnancy test look like?"), stay on your meds. And then ask your dr, who will have those answers.

  • Great thanks. I'm leaning toward just staying on my meds for the two week wait but just wanted to be sure it's ok to do that. And don't worry, I wouldn't post my nasty pee stick online for all to see. That's my style... Plus I'm aware that it's forbidden.
  • Correction:  that's NOT my style
  • -Implantation occurs between 6 and 12 days post ovulation.  It takes 2 days for enough hcg to make its way from the embryo to your blood stream in levels detectable on a blood test performed by your doctor.  It takes 4-5 days (depending on the sensitivity of the test) to be detectable on a home urine test.
-"ovulation pain" is not always a conclusive indicator of ovulation date, it can be mistaken for other things or happen on a date near but not on ovulation.
-an estimated 50-70% of all conceptions don't last long enough to complete implantation
-because of this^ fact, you really only have a 20-30% chance of conception each month, even with good timing

Talk to your OBGYN or GP, they will be able to give you much better information regarding when you should be stopping your medication to protect a potential pregnancy.
  • I realize it may be a 'too late now' scenario, but if you are TTC, you should have already had a talk with your physician about the medications you're taking and how they could affect a pregnancy. They can change your medications or taper you off altogether.

  • Did you doctor not say? There was one med I had to go off when I started TTC and another I was told to continue until after the first positive pregnancy test. I would call either the prescriber or your OB since they can pretty much tell you over the phone.

  • I did have a talk with doc before TTC and do already know they're not recommended in pregnancy by my gastroenterologist but my OB says they're ok to take. So there is some conflicting information. My question really was if you have to wait until implantation generally before medication will affect your fetus or does that depend on the medication. I called my ob to ask and she had a nurse return my call saying go ahead and take it and didn't really answer my question. I stopped the meds anyway due to the conflicting information. Turns out I'm not pregnant anyway so I guess I'll have time to straighten this out. Thanks for the replies.
