Post-baby workouts

Hey ladies I was wondering what you are doing to get back into shape or what you did after previous pregnancies. I'd like something quick to do at nap time. I've tried p90x3 before and had no results. I wish I could afford a gym membership but that's not on the cards now.
I also love hot yoga but that doesn't work with BFing right now

Re: Post-baby workouts

  • I'm doing Les Mills body pump, as well as, spinning and running. If you're looking for quick and cheap, I'd say go for a Jillian Michaels DVD. Or check out Les Mills on demand online. $12 a month subscription gets you unlimited access to all of their workout videos -- body combat, body pump, etc. I have the body pump DVD set already, but I signed up for a subscription so I can do the spin classes. I got a spin bike on Amazon daily deals since I don't have a local gym that offers spin class anymore, love it!

  • With DS one I used the my fitness pal app and that helped me get the rest of my baby weight off. To work out we took lots of walks in the mall---hoping to get outside and do the same now that the weather is starting to warm up where we live. It will be harder this time now having DS1 in tow. Last time I also did a few exercise DVDs in the basement during naps of checked out videos in the OnDemand section of our cable tv provider. They have 10-15 minute videos that aren't bad.

  • With DS, I went on brisk 45-60 minute walks, used my elliptical, or stationary bike. Liked the Couch 2 5K program as well. I also watched my carbs (kept them around 90-100 grams) and drank tons of water.

  • I just started doing the Jillian Michaels 30 day Shred video on YouTube yesterday. So far I've been easing into it with no weights and it hasn't been too bad, I'm definetly tired by the end of the video (its less then 30 minutes) but I don't feel like I've overdone it (I'm 4 weeks pp and feeling relatively well).

I have done the Insanity and P90x programs in the past and I know that they both are a bit advanced for me right now. Along with that I like to run.
  • I think I'm going to do 30DS again, too. I haven't since I was PP with my first baby. Which basically means I have not exercised in 3 years...eek... My bleeding picked up again today, so I'll see how it goes, but I'll probably wait until the 6 week mark as not to prolong it (I've bled til 6 weeks with my other kids.)

  • I've been doing a lot of work on the exercise ball. Bouncing up and down, usually for 30 min to an hour, at least once a day, holding an 8.5lb "weight". I try to alternate arms for the best muscle building. I've also been walking circles around the house. I try to get an extra calf workout in by kicking down the recliner legs.

That's about the extent of my exercise right now, since it still hurts to sit/squat down and my stomach hurts any time I pick up my 25lb toddler.

I am super interested in Jillian Michaels DVD coming out this week: Hot Body Healthy Mommy. Created just for moms trying to get their bodies back after having a baby. I have done the 30DS prior to pregnancy with great results so I am excited to try this after the bleeding has stopped.

  • I'll have to look into this^^^ new one. Jillian looks great all the time and her partner looks great after baby.
Im going to sit down with DH tonight and schedule out when I can go to hot yoga. My studio is 20min away but I love it. And I've been trying to workout at home but besides waking it's hard to get one finished with 2 kids and a dog.

I'm glad to hear you've had great results with it. I will have to look into the new DVD!

Ordered this from Amazon today! I hope it's good.  I liked another DVD I had of hers a lot.  I suck at working out in my living room because I really need a group setting to stay motivated... But it's sooooo much cheaper then a gym membership!

One question - Are you supposed to wait until bleeding stops to begin working out? I want to get back into it but my bleeding picked up today after I thought I was almost done (baby is 4 weeks old on Wednesday).
  • @charliegoldengirl you are suppose to wait until your doctor clears you for excersise. This usually happens at your 6 week post partum check up. (Sometimes 8 weeks if you had a c-section or other complications)

it's after medical clearance but with my last pregnancy I stopped bleeding literally the day before my 6 week appt

  • I attempted my first post baby jog/run today. It was just over a mile and a half and a super easy route, but I literally peed my pants the entire time until i stopped to walk because I was so uncomfortable from peeing so much.

I'm a FTM and had heard/read this would probably happen, any suggestions on making it better. I really enjoy a good 4-5 mile run a few days a week, but I can't pee my pants for 5 miles.

Kegels. Strengthening the pelvic floor is really the only thing I've heard to help. I wasn't good about doing them, and some of the sneezing/peeing got better over time on its own.

Kegels!!! There's another exercise that helps with pelvic floor muscles. It's hard to explain but I'll do my best. Get on your hands and knees and raise your mid back up and squeeze your stomach muscles, then go back to your back parallel to the floor. Hope that was enough detail for you to understand lol.
