March 2016 Moms

Opinions needed please

I'm due on March 20 with my second child. With my first I went to the hospital three days before I had him because I had steady contractions I was sent home. Three hours later (the next morning) I had some discharge. It wasn't a huge gush it was just once I went to the bathroom. I thought it was my mucus plug and wasn't concerned at all. He next day I had a dr appointment and then did sonogram because I was past my due date and informed me there was little fluid around the baby and I needed to be induced.
Well this time around, yesterday I had a small gush of fluid while going pee and when I wiped there was discharge on the toilet paper. It was clear and sticky. So I immediately called the doctor and they said to come in to be checked. Of course it was already too late in the afternoon and I had to go to the hospital. They determined that my water didn't break was only 2cm dilated (does that even count lol) and they did a sono to check the fluids around the baby and they were fine so I was sent home.
Now this morning I'm having more discharge. The same consistency as yesterday. Clear, sticky like no smell. I have it when I go to the bathroom. Just wondering what your opinions are? I know I should just call the doctor but I feel dumb and paranoid. Wondering if it could be the lube from them checking my cervix repeatedly last night?
any quick responses are appreciated!! Thank you

  • I had the same kind of discharge for two days before I went into active labor. As a FTM I also wondered if it was my water, but once my water broke it is a very different consistency much more liquid. Of course call your doctor if it worries you but I'm guessing it's just discharge as your body prepares

Just call your doctor. No way for us to know what it is. Good luck.

  • Amniotic fluid is generally a liquid and not sticky.  Typically they test it with a litmus paper test that shows yes it is fluid or no it's not, so there really is no margin for error there I assume.  It could just be more cervical mucus.
  • I am due on the 30th and have been noticing some discharge every time I use the restroom. I asked my OB during my last appointment and she told me that mucus plug would look different from regular discharge and if my water broke, the consistency will definitely be noticeably different. And if it is my water leaking, then I will notice a constant flow (maybe minor, but constant) of wetting my pants or pats.

She also told me that my fluid level is on the lower side (she wants me to be above 10 but I am more like a 7/8 right now). She told me to drink a lot of liquid and just keep drinking.

Hope it helps! I am seeing my OB every week now so I feel quite ok and if anything, she can check it out right away. OBs are used to dealing with questions from preggos so dont feel bad calling them.
  • I agree it sounds like discharge rather than your water breaking. I had tons and tons of discharge, crazy amounts at the end of my pregnancy. If you lie down and get up and notice a small gush then that's a good sign that it's your water leaking.
Also a random fyi- the amniotic fluid test can be 'inconclusive'  I went in because I thought my water might be leaking and the test came back green, yellow is negative and blue is positive. Fortunately I was at 5cm and in labor so it really didn't matter.

  • Thank you for responding.  I called the doctor just to be safe.  They had me come in and did a check and said it was just discharge.  But she did order a culture test on it not really sure why she did that she didn't really explain.  They didn't do another ultrasound to check the fluid since it was just done the night before (they said it was about an 8 and they were happy with that but never explained what that meant and I didn't think to ask-really should of just so I know).  Now its just back to the waiting game again but I'm glad to have peace of mind that nothing is wrong. Back to the doctor on Monday for my 40 week appointment-NST, sono and meet with the doctor.  Unless baby decides to come before then.
  • I noticed a lot of discharge after my plug fell out. It looked a lot like a huge snot ball, but water did not break and there were no contractions for the rest of the day. The next day I was at the grocery store and though I had peed myself several times, but turns out it was a partial break of my waters. The litmus test they performed was negative, but I insisted that it had broken, they then did a more exact test which involved a doctor taking a sample of the fluid.
  • So glad your LO arrived safe and sound, congratulations!  You did a wonderful job, momma.
  • Second what @smushi said. Congratulations and be proud of yourself!! You did a really great job
