Infertility

A little of me.

Hello Again.
Well we went to our follow up appointment with the fertility clinic. It was horrible. I'm struggling with how to handle all of this. My results came back as expected. My HSG showed left tube wide open. Right tube was blocked or was spasming. It was blocked by a possible polyp. Which just sucks. We expected my results in detail. Figured we just needed to get our ovulation on track. My husband was super upset, his SA results were horrible and we had no idea. They only were able to find 8 sperm total in his sample. Out of those 8, 2 of them were not swimming. They told us they would do more blood work on him, try to figure out what was going on, we are hopeful maybe its a simple hormone balance issue which they told us is a easier fix. If everything comes back normal we are stuck with In vitro. We have no idea how we will even afford this. It's at least $14,000 I don't know how to afford that. I'm so stressed.

Thanks for listening to my vent. If you have any advice we would be more than open to it!

Re: A little of me.

  • I'm so sorry that you had bad news.  I hope they find a way to help your husband's sperm count improve.

My wife and I decided to share a car, and put all the money that would go into a second car into fertility treatments instead.  I'm not saying that's something that would help you, but it's a creative way we found to make it all more affordable.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • @ashcip how many samples did he provide? My husbands came back with about 4 sperm and we were referred to a urologist. The urologist did blood work another sample and an ultrasound to make sure no blockage. Everything came back normal and his sperm count morph mobility and motility all great! We were thinking we would be straight to IVF but we are on our first cycle of IUI.

I know it's super hard but try to stay positive and wishing you luck on your journey
  • This journey is overwhelming, to say the least. When my DH and I first went to our RE it was decided we would only do IUI because IVF is so darn expensive. We are very lucky that my DHs parents also want us to have kids, so they offered to pay for it, with us contributing as much as we felt we could. I agree with PP that your DH should give another sample. I thought it was standard practice for low results to request a second one about 4-6 weeks later. As for you affording it, you should check with your clinic to see if they work with any finance companies that give loans for IVF, such as ARC. I wish you the best of luck in your journey!

  • He is going in for another sample next week. I'd cry if it was just a bad sample... They told us that it was possible. They also did blood work to check everything out as well...

    Thanks everyone!

  • @ashcip my husband thinks he killed them all because he was so focused on getting them in the cup
  • Oooo goodness that's too funny. Hubby said he felt like it was really awkward and everything and he didn't feel like it went well... But they said he had plenty of liquid.. I'm just hopeful that they figure something out that may get us to an iui.. We are looking at all budget cutting ideas but frankly we already cut our budget pretty hard last year and have been living that price. Perhaps winning the lottery would be best! =]

  • @ashcip - I'm so sorry you're dealing with this!  This stuff is so hard, but you are not alone.  IVF is expensive, no doubt about that.  Definitely look into loans, like @AandDM2014 suggested.  There are also IVF studies that will pay for some or all of the procedures needed, such as the Star Trial or the Megaset Trial.  They each have different requirements, but check with your clinic to see if they are participating in any trials and if you might be eligible.  It's worth asking at least!  Is your husband being referred to a urologist who specializes in male infertility?  My husband has been working with one since December now and it has helped improve his SAs pretty significantly.  He had very low sperm count at his first SA last October and now the count is well above the normal cutoff.  There are treatments to help with male fertility, and a urologist will be the best doctor to figure out the appropriate direction for your husband.

    Me: 34, DH: 38 ~ TTC since 2014
    IUI #1-3 (Nov 2015, Feb 2016, May 2016) = BFNs
IVF ER (July 2016) = 7 PGS normal embryos
    FET #1 (Sept 2016) = BFP! DD born 5/30/17
    FET #2 (April 2019) = BFN
    FET #3 (July 2019) = BFP! DS born 3/27/20
  • @wifeinraleigh28 we were referred to the fertility clinics male infertility specialist. Once he goes for the follow up exam with them and we get the SA results back I believe we will push for referral to urologist... Hopefully we will hear back from his blood work today so we can have some answers.

I will look into those programs thanks! We talked about medical loans I hate the idea but it is what it is. I plan to look for a second job in the mean time since we at least will be at a stand still for 3 months or so

  • I'm sorry you have to go through that, I know it's not easy. Sending T&Ps that it gets easier for you and it works out the easier route!
  • Hi, ash! Firstly I'm terribly sorry for that you're facing now! I know how hard it could be!!
After 6 years of struggling and unsuccessful surgery we finally got to de ivf. I was diagnosed on endo and PCOS like a rather unpleasant bunch of things :/Well this all is the thing from the past now, dear God blessed all our sufferings. We're waiting for our tiny now. Still there were so many things we had to decide upon earlier!! The clinics at home were pretty expensive for us, so we went on with seeking abroad ones.
I guess 14 thousand is too much for the ivf cycle.. Well, I don't know the details of IUI treatment as haven't faced it even once. But I think our dealing with donor eggs is not the cheapest one of the treatments. After we came to biotexcom (Ukraine) for initial consultation we booked 5 att program there as it gave the guarantee. It said: in case of five failures they refund all money paid. Selective reduction and meds were also included into the total package price 9.900 euro. Well, it took us less than 5 att but all in all we didn't lose our money at all.
Dear ash, I wanna so much things go better and easier for you, but as for choosing the place for ivf just think twice.
Wish you all the best Xx
