"New" to board (Child Mentioned)

Hello all,
I'm no stranger to the bump, or even the IF board, however I only lurked here before. I've had PCOS since I was a teenager and was told by 2 different doctors that I would need some type of intervention to get pregnant. After trying on our own for 9 months (lurking on this board for 3 months), I got a BFP and had DS at 29 weeks. DH and I have been trying for just over a year with no success. I finally went to an RE and have started the process to get help TTC #2. I was given provera and had an egg count yesterday. I also started 50mg of Clomid and have an HSG (I'm a little nervous for that!) on Friday.
I've always known I would need help of I wanted more children, but just starting this journey has been a little daunting. I look forward to getting to know you and hearing any advice/support you have to offer.

  • @eadams08 Welcome! I'm sorry you have to join us here, but this place is definitely a great resource and support system. I won't lie to you, the HSG was incredibly painful for me, I almost kicked the doc in the face! The good news is the pain fades right away once they are done and aside from some mild cramping later, I had no lingering effects. What I was told is that if you are used to painful periods, the HSG is not too bad. You may ask if you can take some Tylenol in advance (if they haven't already let you know.) I hope it goes well for you and FX for your cycle!

  • We just went to a RE for help with having a  second child as well. I have unexplained infertility. I had the HSG last week. It's not the greatest experience but if you already have a child, you will be fine. Theres one strong cramp that feels similar to a labor contraction. Other than that it's just very uncomfortable but the good news is that it's quick and it can help increase your chances to conceive. My dr recommended taking advil before hand, which I did. Good luck to you!!
  • When I went for my hsg it was terribly painful.  Then again,  everyone is totally different. Some girls I've spoken to,  it didn't bother.  Just try to relax and take some advil before hand. It will help  ;) best of luck hunny

I second the pain meds!  I took 3 Motrin early on the day of my HSG and another 3 about an hour before. It definitely helped to manage the pain.
  • My HSG was not the most comfortable experience of my life, but they were pretty quick so it wasn't too bad. Im sure since you've gone through labor it won't be as bad as it may have been for some of us who haven't had children before

  • Welcome I'm new to the boards and will be starting clomid as well as getting an ultrasound! Hoping all of us get lucky this month!
  • Thanks for all the input! I have my appointment in about 2 1/2 hours and I'm a little nervous!! I will take some tylenol (and possibly some ibuprofen too!), but I think the anxiety of the possible pain is what is making this worse!

  • Sorry to have made you anxious @eadams08 ! Just keep taking deep breaths the whole time. It doesn't last for very long fortunately. Hugs!

  • Well,  hsg shows everything is clear. I didn't really have any pain at all, just like mild menstrual cramps. So this all still boils down to pcos and not ovulating. Also, the dr said he thinks I should lose more weight before trying to have a baby (which means no more treatments from him). I'm feeling a little depressed. I know I'm overweight, but my blood labs are normal and I just spent a year losing 65lbs! To be told that I haven't done well enough to get help to have a baby is disheartening.

  • Hi @eadams08.
Wow, you did fantastic with loosing 65lbs!
    Honestly, don't think otherwise.
Is there a possibility to get a second opinion about possible treatment?
So you could start your journey?

Glad the HSG wasn't as bad for you either.

This whole journey is overwhelming, but the women here are a great support.

    Keeping my fx for you.

  • Welcome! im glad your HSG wasn't too bad. I think the anticipation for it can be worse than the actual process!
  • I'm right there with you on the weight thing. Have you considered a new doc? My old OB/GYN said there was (I quote) "no point" to fertility treatments until I got my weight under 150 lbs. I'm 220 now. I know I need to lose more weight, but that just felt so off to me. I work out and have great blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. It was like she refused to see I was more than a number! Also, this is the same doc that asked me if I was on blood pressure meds since my numbers were so good...I'm like no...didn't we just review my medication list together? *facepalm* That and her (incorrect) comments about larger women and their ovaries to a trainee doctor while I was in the room (she said there was "no point" in trying to feel the ovaries on a woman with a BMI as high as mine) were the final straws.

My new doctor was definitely on board with me getting down under 200lbs, which is also my goal, but also didn't shut me down when it came to TTC. She was honest and tactful in that it might be more difficult, but she acknowledged I have a lot going on besides weight and that weight can't obviously be the only issue since plenty of women who are 220 pounds or larger get pregnant all the time.  Best of luck to you.

  • Well, I completed my first round of clomid and today my ultrasound showed that I had 1 follicle in each ovary, but they both were only about 11 and 12. I was told I'd need to see at least at 18 to ovulate. So, I guess it won't be happening this month. I did talk more with the Dr and he is open to more drugs to stimulate and possibly IUI, but said he wouldn't do IVF for me at my current weight. Which, I'm totally fine with as I wasn't prepared to go to IVF. I will be starting Letrozole with my next cycle. I'm glad I talked with my Dr. I was contemplating ordering clomid from a Canadian Pharmacy -_- DH is being sent to do a semen analysis. Originally, he wasn't going to since we already conceived naturally, but the RE wanted to cover all bases I guess.
So fingers crossed for NEXT month...
