Pregnancy Work Out Videos?

Hi Mama's,

I'm a plus size first time mama-to-be, and I am terrified of gaining an unhealthy amount of weight.  I figured I would start a light workout, nothing intense since I wasn't overly active before pregnancy (activity consisted of taking the dog for a 10 minute walk daily), can anyone recommend a pregnancy video? Maybe a yoga one and a light cardio one?  Plus I heard staying active in pregnancy helps with labour which is a bonus.

(ps I did a search and saw there was an exercise/healthy eating thread but that seemed more of a check in for people already doing it)

  • I do encourage  you  to  join  that thread. The ladies there are super supportive  and kind and it has helped me stay motivated. (I just haven't had time to reply there for a couple weeks)

I use YouTube for a lot of my videos. I just search and bookmark the ones I want to do. But do check them ahead of time, because  so excited are way too weird or not something I personally  enjoy.

Also walking is fabulous  exercise. You could always lengthen your dog's  walk to get a bit of extra exercise  in.

  • I have been doing some light cardio with Denise Austin's Fit & Firm Pregnancy DVD. The tone can be a little cheesy but it's really convenient with 20ish-minute exercise routines for each trimester

I did Lindsay Brin's workout DVDs with my last pregnancy. I started working out at home more once I felt uncomfortable being in the gym weight area with a big pregnant belly.  ;-) The DVDs have workouts for each trimester, and you can choose from low/moderate to high intensity. Since I was already into a fitness routine, the latter worked for me. But, the low intensity may be great for you.

Just a remember to go at your own pace. Pregnancy isn't a time to start something that feels too intense for you.

Here's a YouTube preview of the workouts: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o0dLW-6G5aw

  • I found a 10 Minute Solutions Pregnancy Pilates on YouTube. All five 10-minute workouts are there or you can buy the DVD. The 10 Minute Solutions DVDs are great for when you first starting out or need to take it easy. You can do as many or as few of the segments as possible. And I've found Pilates to be easy and enjoyable even when I'm heavy and/or out of shape.

My husband also suggested I do resistance band workouts. He doesn't want me lifting weights, but I'd like to get my arms toned before I have to start carrying baby around. I can't find any workouts on YouTube that are specifically for pregnancy, so I just cut out any moves that require bending forward. Probably safe if form is correct, but like I said the workouts are not specifically for pregnant women so I just don't do them.

  • I use fitness blender on YouTube for most of my workouts. They have some no-impact beginner ones that I recommend to start out with. Also, Yoga with Adriene is amazing and she tends to be more gentle and great for beginners than other instructors. Her mantra is "find what feels good."
