Zantac syrup

So we've finally got medication for LO's reflux - zantac syrup. It's sugar free and smells extremely strong (a bit like mouthwash!) LO will not swallow it he's spits it out and crys as soon as we try put some in his mouth and today he gaged when he swallowed some....
Is this normal??? Has any of you had this experience or is there an alternative that tastes better?
It seems so stupid to me that they're making a children's medication so ugly tasting.....

Re: Zantac syrup

  • DD just got put on the generic of Prilosec last week. It is strawberry flavored and she had no problem taking it. I would call your pharmacist to see if you can get one that is flavored or just less harsh tasting.

  • Maybe giving it to him right before feeding or like while switching sides for breastfeeding that way it is bad taste then good taste, you know? How much does he have to take? I know that the tip my pedi gave me for tylonol after shots was to give it to them in their cheek towards the back of their mouth because it bypasses most of the taste receptors on the tongue.

I do that with the Tylenol and I also either stick the pacifier right in her mouth or my boob immediately afterwards to keep her from spitting it out.
  • Call some pharmacies in the area and see if they will flavor it for you.
  • I tried everything, he spit it out regardless of how we gave it to him plain. I even asked the pharmacy to flavor it, no change. So now I mix it with 1 oz of formula or breastmilk to make sure he finishes it, before I feed him anything else. It's the only way I could get him to take it, though I'm sure it's less effective that way.
  • We have the same smelling Zantac medication and had the same problem. Our solution was to put it (DS currently takes 2 ml 2x per day) in a bottle with only  1/2 to 1oz of breastmilk. The pharmacist and pedi said that was fine. You just want to make sure it's a small volume so you ensure that the baby finishes the entire bottle. After that you can obviously give him the rest of his feeding. I thought he'd still have an issue with the taste but he drinks it right down as long as we give it to him at the beginning of a feeding when he's hungry.
  • DD is on a really bitter tasting medication too for reflux (ranitidine) and what I do is I mix the medication with some hand expressed milk in a syringe, before a feeding! Like PPs said, put it towards the back of their mouth by the cheek. I usually do it little by little so she doesn't spit it all out and I wait until she swallows the little bit before I give her the next squirt.

If I do the medication straight she just ends up spitting it out. Also mixing in a bottle doesn't work with her either because then the whole bottle tastes gross and she won't take it. After the syringe I just feed her normally so it washes down and gets the bad taste from her mouth.

In the hospital with babies, we take the syringe and put it in the back corner of babes mouth like pp have said but even better I have found with my LO, I get her sucking on my finger and put the syringe in with the finger, into the back corner, so she sucks while getting it.
  • Thanks SO much everyone! DH did ask at the pharmacy if they had a non sugar free one but they said no. We will try all the tips an ideas you all gave they sound very promising! And may also be a next step to ask the pharmacy to flavour it - I never thought of that!
Thank you so much again! - I was on the brink of thinking we were back to square 1!:#
