Makena - hydroxyprogesterone caproate injections

**Loss mentioned**

Given my history with premature labor that resulted in losing my son, my doctor recommended I get the makena injections starting at 16 weeks until 37 weeks. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with them, any side effects, did it work? I got a ton of information from the doctor but just want to hear personal experiences.

I don't have experience with it, but I will also be getting them starting week 16 since my son came early.  My friend just did them because she went into preterm labor with her first and she had a full term baby!

I also had a close friend recently go through the same.  Her first DD came just shy of 37 weeks so her doctor had her do the injections just to be safe.  She delivered another healthy daughter at 39w4d two weeks ago!  Wishing you both the best!

ETA: While I never asked directly, I do not believe my friend had any issues with depression as a side effect.  We both had PPD after our first babies were born and talked about that a lot so I think she would have brought it up if she were dealing with it again due to the injections.

  • @diagonalley we'll be injection buddies, lol. I read somewhere a few women experienced severe depression which freaked me out a little bit.

Good to hear a real success story with your friend.

  • Hey! @diagonalley have you started the injections? If so how has it been? I will begin treatment tomorrow.

@JennM205 thank you so much for the good wishes.

  • Im not sure the injections are the same as the oral progesterone, but I've been on the 100mg of oral progesterone for PCOS. I almost lost this baby (threatened mc)

The progesterone actually has me feeling great. I have so much energy. Now I have a higher drive, and I'm sleeping better.

I haven't experienced any negative side effects so hopefully y'all won't either.
  • @diagonalley thanks! Good luck to you too! I'll get back to you on how it goes.

@Cassandraspregnacy2 thanks for the good vibes!

Oral and intramuscular progesterone are different compounds but ultimately do the same which is to prevent early labor. The injections are only prescribed in women who have been through premature labor before and are pregnant with a single fetus. The oral version is micronized progesterone and the injections are 17- hydroxyprogesterone caproate.
