Post Partum Constipation

Please help me....dealing with terrible constipation since having my son on the 5th.  Currently not sleeping trying to pass a painful stool.  So embarrassing but I have been suffering for several days now. I've been on stool softeners since the delivery.  They don't seem to be working.  What should I do?!

Have you tried a laxative? I would try a gentle laxative or if your that uncomfortable give a suppository a shot for immediate relief

I had a 3a tear and I was initially really afraid to even try.  It took a fleet enema 5 days post partum and constant problems ever since.  I was finally able to go this morning.  It was suggested I take milk of magnesia and 4 oz of warm prune juice.  Hopefully things will become more regular now.  I'm a private pooper.  So, the last 6 days have been somewhat dehumanizing to be crying out in the bathroom and sobbing on the phone to my mother.  Ready to make a little more progress in my recovery!

My son was also born on the 5th and I can count on 1 hand how many times I've "went" since, and my doctor didn't even prescribe stool softeners upon my release.

I definitely recommend 2 cola cell stool softener every night for all pp moms... it just makes life a little easier

Hopefully you will feel better soon

I would take miralax for a while. It will probably take a few days to work completely, but stool softened aren't always enough. A nurse talked me into taking it in the hospital after ds2 and a pretty good tear, my first bm a few days later was still solid but felt like nothing.  With ds3 I waited too long to take it post partum so by the time I was 5-6 days post partum and no good bms and started taking it, it took a few days to work. This time I started taking it as soon as I got home from the hospital and everything has been very regular and comfortable. I'm switching over to one stool softener + lots of water and hopefully that keeps things regular until I'm ready to go completely off.  One thing to keep in mind if you're breastfeeding is that you need to drink a ton of water.  One of the first things to happen if you aren't drinking plenty is constipation.

I had terrible constipation and gas for the first 5 days after my c-section. The hospital food didn't help, even my husband became constipated from the hospital food. I was given stool softeners and gas medicine but it wasn't working. Coffee finally worked for me. I'm private about going to the bathroom too but man, once I was able to finally go I woke my husband up to tell him the great news. Lol. I was starting to look 9 months pregnant again, I was so relieved once I was able to go!

6 days post csection and my constipation was unbearable.  Miralax wasn't enough and stool softness don't work well on me.  I ended up having to take both to get results

This happened to me after my first. I ended up getting hemorrhoids because of it. Stool softeners, lots of water and make sure to walk around. The more I just sat around the house, the worse it was. I'm also going to throw in some Fiber One granola bars right away. I hope it gets easier for you!!!
