August 2016 Moms

What are you reading?

Let's talk about books! Are you reading something really good right now? Pregnancy related? What have been your favorite (or most informative) bump books?

Any book lists to share?

My doula has a lending library of pregnancy and baby books, so any "must read" out there?

Re: What are you reading?

  • I really enjoyed "Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn" last time.  And for fun, check out Alphamom's pregnancy week by week calendar on alphamom.com

For pleasure, I'm about to start the last in the Outlander series (for about the fourth time).  I'll be taking it on vacation with me tomorrow!  But with an almost two year old I doubt I will be lounging by the pool nonstop.

  • I'm reading "Childbirth without fear." by Grantly Dick-Read. It was written in the 1940's, updated in 1959 just before he passed. Its a really interesting take on the obgyn profession, from someone who spent his whole life doing it. It's really interesting to see how we got here, and how things have changed... and how they haven't. He also talks about pain coping techniques he learned as a survivor of WW1, dealing with his injuries, and how those same techniques helped women in labor.

It's a *really* interesting read, even if I weren't pregnant.

  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as well as Queen of the Tearling. Both are great!

I have a few different books going at the moment. Baby related - Heading Home With Your Newborn: From Birth To Reality. Good read so far with lots of practical info for FTMs. Other books - The last book in the Spellman series by Lisa Lutz. Super fun and easy series to read. UnSlut by Emily Lindin - interesting read. It contains her diaries from middle school with commentary from her as an adult. She dealt with slut shaming as a sixth grader. Eye opening and a little scary to read after finding out I'm having a girl.
  • Baby Related: A Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy and Good Dog, Happy Baby

Not Baby Relater: Ready Player One and Career of Evil (Third Comoran Strike book by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling)

My friends and husband make fun of me for reading lots of books at once.

@Ladybear10 I read ready player one a few years ago. It was fascinating because you can totally see our society going that way. A lot of dysitopian fantasy is either really improbable, or set so far in the future as to be unimaginable.
I also read a girlfriend's guide in one sitting... It was hilarious, and I admit that was how I spent last Sunday!

  • Just finished The Martian. So so nerdy and great. About to start Miss Peregrine's tonight.
  • @Allisun85  Yes!! I just can only think about DH playing World of Warcraft when he was really into it in college. I also proctor a couple online classes for extra money, so I could easily see it merging in the future to make everything more accessible. I don't know I find it fun to think about.
