Weekly Randoms go here...

Re: Weekly Randoms go here...

  • Yes, I'm from MA where guns are nonexistent but my husband was AD Marine Corps where we lived in NC and SC where guns were big. Also in the Marine Corps guns are huge, obviously. Most of his friends were from Texas, Kansas, Georgia and so on where guns were also prevelant. Definitely regional

Anyone booking newborn photo shoots or have experience with it?  I'm thinking about it and wondering what questions I should be asking or how I should be picking a photographer if we do one.
We also booked. I didn't want to do maternity photos, since I'd rather take pictures where my LO was the focus and not myself. Our photographer is WONDERFUL!! She will come to our home and take pictures in lifestyle realistic situations and not the baby-in-a-baseball-glove type style, which I am very excited for.

@bankssl1 hi neighbor!  I'm in DFW too.

@mkemommy - I have my newborn photographer booked.  It's in-home and she will be there for at least 3-4 hours to get through baby's eat/sleep/poop cycle.  I would just make sure whoever you book (in studio or not, gives you at least a few hours)

    and re: the gun discusison
I've been around them my whole life.  Mainly because of hunting (uncles and cousins).   My dad was not into hunting, but had one gun.  We knew where it was, didn't know where bullets were and knew the dangers. Brother has several many guns and has a gun safe in his separate  garage .  His kids know the dangers but it makes me nervous.  DH has 3 and keeps the small one in our room.  We just got a safe for it, and bullets are stored away.  But I'm kind of with @Bear14+  What's the point if you have to assemble it for protection?  H does use it for gun ranges a few times a year, and that's about it.  I have shot it a few times, I have no interest in it.

I was was also in church last week and the guy in front of me had a gun (he was trying to conceal..). So odd.  But maybe he was with the gov. And has to carry at all times?

  • So, I have zero desire to have a gun in my house.  I wouldn't want to shoot anyone ever--even if they were trying to hurt me or my family.  But that is another issue.  Having said that, I do enjoy shooting a gun.  I don't do it often, but would totally go to a range and shoot their gun there.  I am not anti-gun by any stretch.  Just would never want one in my home.

For the question of what's the point of having it for defense if it's in pieces?  I agree.  I think it comes down to what is the larger risk--that you will have an intruder and need to defend yourself or that tiny fingers could get it and hurt him or herself?  That's a personal choice.

  • Well, doesn't take that long to assemble and load depending on where the other pieces are...

But in an emergency, it could. If you are panicked and scared and fumbling around with multiple locks, kind of defeats the purpose. Honestly, I don't even know if I could access the gun in timely manner if someone were in my room, so much if it were in multiple locations.
  • Here in the south you don't tell people if you don't have a gun. It's commonplace and would be unusual if you didn't. DH carries everywhere we go, even church (with permission from our elders) after an incident that happened not long ago (a man walked into our classroom building during Sunday school and ended up getting arrested for various reasons. The baby class is the first class when you walk in so now we have cameras installed and a member of the church on watch during church hours which is so not the way things should be).
We have a gun under our bed too, locked in a case with the ammunition kept seperately. DH hunts so he has various shotguns and rifles locked in a safe. He was taught gun safety at a very young age and we plan to be very adamant about gun safety with our children. I am from England, where you cannot own gun, so this was all very bizarre to me when I moved here.  My husband is very responsible otherwise I would be uncomfortable with it. He wants me to get my own gun and I said no since I am not comfortable with it.

  • KOR121 Hi!!!

I am so happy we can all talk about this like civilized adults  It's for sure a touchy subject. I just pray all guns are locked up around babies at all times.

Mad props for saying no. It's really hard to be in a gun family and say no. I owned 1 gun that I gave to my brother Bc I was far more concerned about having it with me in NYC where it was likely to get stolen and used to kill someone or by someone who would get killed. Now, I recognize I don't use guns enough to be comfortable having them in my house and make my family give me a refresher if I go hunting. It's far better to admit what you don't know. :) Also - super sorry about your 1 he results. Hope the 3 HR goes fine!

Just looked at my results online. Passed the 1hr GD test (awesome), but my red blood cell, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were all below normal, so may be anemia? Haven't heard from my louse of an OB, not sure he'll call.

The main symptoms of anemia? Shortness of breath (check), extreme fatigue/weakness (check), dizziness/headaches (check). All of which I complained of to my TW OB last night crying that I couldn't work and this couldn't be normal, who said 'you should call your primary care doctor he can help with the headaches and breathlessness.' Gah!!!! He should have said, "sounds like pregnancy related anemia, eat a burger and a facking spinach leaf!"
What a dip. Can you find a new OB? And my blood work was all on the wayyyy lower end of normal, too. I plan on starting iron pills tonight. I didn't realize shortness of breath and dizziness are signs, too. Totally have those in abundance.
  • Praying for you, @MsBeachNJ! Let us know what you find out!

Sounds really similar to my blood work.  I was JUST barely in "normal" range for anything iron related despite the fact that my prenatal has 27 mg of iron (150% dv).  Hopefully your twat of an OB can get his shit together and actually help you :(

@mamanicoleof3 ugh that sucks! Def start now before you go out of normal range. @sgoldberg247 my prenatal does too, seems it's not hitting the mark!

Apparently I was below normal during my first CBC in January, and have dipped even more Bc it either wasn't caught or was considered a 'normal' second tri dip. At the apt, I asked my OB what I can do immediately about the out of breath (it's gotten really bad) and should I use my inhaler/will it help. And he said sure use it! I don't need it, I need iron. Asshat. >:[ I've already got feelers out for a new provider and am waiting. This is the straw that fell on the straw that broke the camels bump.

ETA: Bc it's a blood panel not a television channel autocorrect!
  • I have a GD test in two weeks. Normally, I don't eat much sugar but these days I'm like--two weeks, must have all sugar now, and tots.

My HG was 8.6 after I hemorrhaged after an MC- I plan on combating the anemia with as much iron-power as I can!

I sooooo hope you're able to find an actual caring OB soon!!
  • @MsBeachNJ Thinking of you and your family, and hoping for the best outcome!
  • @mamanicoleof3 you're on the weekly leaderboard right now. You go girl.
Ha! It was all yesterday when I had nothing to keep me occupied while I was sick :-/ I'm lame.

:( That must have been really scary on top of a traumatic situation. I'm so sorry for your loss and ordeal.

Good for you for being proactive. I'm gonna follow your lead and start beefing up (literally and figuratively). I hate that I went into his office feeling so defeated Bc other pregnant women are doing fine and I was calling in to work and using my precious time off. It's so mentally important to me to be a 'good' worker and he gave me no support. I feel better knowing the cause and that it has such an easy solution. I'm excited to talk to new providers. Thank you for the support!!
