So I have a pretty nasty virus right now, taking it easy, lots of fluids etc...but it got me thinking. What happens if myself or my husband get sick at the time the baby is due? Would the baby naturally be protected from my sickness, would I not be allowed to see him? Just curious if anyone else has gone through that.
Re: Cold/Flu During Delivery
I doubt they would keep baby from you. If you are nursing you're actually supposed to nurse baby MORE when you're sick to keep them healthy. If you are formula feeding and they have a nursery they may encourage you to send baby down there more often and rest. Regardless, if baby is healthy and your delivery is normal (ehich there is a large range of normal in the world of delivery and recovery) then your hospital stay is likely to be short.
The only reason I would think they would keep you apart is if baby needs to be in the NICU for some reason. But don't stress about that.
As for dad, check with your hospital. Mine is exceptionally strict. If dad has been sick with a fever (over 100.1) or vomiting within 24 hours he is not allowed to be there when baby is being born or when I'm in recovery in the maternity ward. Must be 24 hours symptom free before he's allowed in.
Focus on getting YOU healthy. When my first was born I had a persistent cough. Like couldn't get through a sentence without coughing once or twice. Let me tell you...coughing while you're sitting on a swollen vag with two dozen stitches and everyone wants to talk to you is NO fun at all.
They didn't seem too concerned at the hospital and everything progressed as normal.
