Growth spurt in formula fed baby?

You'd think I'd remember, but my other child is 5 and I can't remember. What does a growth spurt in a formula fed baby look like? Is it normal for them to cluster feed?
DS is 6 weeks today. Normally DS has been eating 4oz every 3-4 hours with one 6 hour stretch at night. Yesterday DS seemed to be a bottomless pit and wanted to eat every 2-2.5 hours. He would eat 2 oz then 2 hours later eat 3 oz etc all day long from 320am til 6pm then he finally took a good nap from 7-830 when we woke him to get ready for bed. He ate 1.5oz and zonked out. He slept from 9-5!!! Then at 5 this morning he ate 6oz! And fell right back to sleep and is still sleeping- it's almost 830 here. Does this sound like a growth spurt?

  • Sounds like it to me! Mine is 6 weeks tomorrow and has been acting exactly the same way! He is so cute!
  • My guy is 6 weeks as of yesterday and just when I thought 3oz every 3 hours was good, he's started acting the same way as yours. Now I'm worried I'm either giving him too much or too little, but I don't want to over feed him. I guess I'm just taking it as it comes and trying to figure it out as we go. Sometimes I'll do a little more- like 1/2 - 1 oz- after the feeding if he doesn't seem content.
  • Glad to know I'm not alone! It was so nice he slept all night but these daytimes are killing me. He doesn't seem satisfied and barely naps
  • Same thing is happening here!  DS is almost 5 weeks old and usually eats 3oz every 2-3 hours and now wants to eat every 1-2 hours and is not satisfied with 3 oz. we will give him another .5 or 1 oz even more if he is still showing signs of hunger. He has been fussier in general after eating too. Is this normal?

  • It can last 2 or 3 days also. What a cutie by the way. I wouldn't worry about overfeeding. They need more during a growth spurt.

  • @ambdtb my guy has been very fussy today. His eyes are super Heavy while he eats and when he's done, he's wide awake and crying.
  • @robinj716 how old is your LO?  This has been happening to us for the last 48 hours or so.  He may be ok for a bit then never really settles down. I try everything to calm him and in the end he just wants more to eat. I also think he has a lot of gas too.

  • @ambdtb he's 6 weeks old! Lately I've been letting him cry it out in his crib.
  • It seems to have definitely been a growth spurt. We're back to 4oz every 3-4 hours with one 6hour stretch at night.
  • @dtaded13 I got a 6 hour stretch one night! The most I have gotten is 4 in one night and that's rare- it's happened maybe three times! Lucky you ;)
  • Sounds just like us. DS2 had been feeding like crazy and super fussy compared to normal. I chalked it up to being a growth spurt and assume it will pass in a few days.

Not to rub it in, but we also got 2 nights in a row of 7 hours between feedings and Monday night he slept 9-5!
