How much clothes do you need for baby and what sizes are good to get? We went to a cosignment shop today and got some pieces, but I didn't want to go overboard!
You'll need every size at some point. We limited our newborn clothes to a few plain white onesies and I think 2 colored ones, because some newborns never fit in them. My niece was a 5 pound healthy baby and she needed premie clothes for her first 3 weeks, whereas my nephew came out skipping newborn all together.
We have one newborn piece but mostly 0-3s and 3-6s. Some of the 0-3s seem so tiny that I can definitely see her growing out of it quickly! I'm washing what we got today then I'm going to take inventory to see if we need anything else before baby is born.
I would just get some NB (especially at consignment prices because then you won't feel as bad if you don't need it) and some 0-3 month.
You will need every size but you never really know the season for the size (fleece vs cotton, long sleeve vs short sleeve) or what brands will fit. For example, DS never fit in Children's Place when he was a baby but Carter's fit great.
Consignment stores and sales are great for getting a mix of sizes and brands, though, to test out and see what works.
DS 9/2/13 was a BFP from an IUI! Triplets due 6/29/16 also from an IUI!
I posted a thread about this a while back and I got some pretty good advice. I'll see if I can find the link.
My mom was going crazy buying 6 - 9 month stuff because she swears that we came out that big. Impossible, woman. I told her to chill out and buy 0-3 and 3-6 if she was going to keep buying us stuff. So we have a stock pile of stuff that he probably won't even be able to wear because it'll be winter at that time.
Anyway, we have about a week's worth of "newborn" clothes we bought new that we're leaving the tags on just in case they don't fit (Carter's will return any time if you have the receipt and tags on) but I bought a little bit of everything at a consignment sale. 0-3/3-6 onesies and sleepers for the summer time. A couple of cute outfits because they were cheap. You can probably get some 6 - 9 month pajamas and such now if you wanted, just keep in mind it will be winter around that time so shop for the season. If I didn't already have stuff my mom had bought I wouldn't be buying anything bigger than 3 - 6 probably. I plan on putting our extra, too big clothes in a thin tote under our bed so our closet and dressers aren't bombarded with things he won't wear for a while.
Thanks! We need some 3-6 sleepers because the cosignment store didn't have a lot of these. We got some 0-3s at a good price at Target (value pack with three). We have onesies for both 0-3 and 3-6, probably four to five each if I'm remembering correctly. We also got a few pants 3-6 and light weight jackets. We got pretty lucky at Goodwill and glad we found the cosignment shop (some stuff seemed over priced but there were good deals mixed in). Goodwill is really hit or miss with what they have.
Omg I went through DS baby clothes last week to wash and organize for this baby. I have also bought some new clothes not realizing how much DS actually had! We have enough baby clothes in all sizes we could probably have triplets and still have enough! I was so overwhelmed. I'm glad my sister is also having a boy a month after me so I can give her some stuff and a friend whose having twin boys! Honestly they don't need tons. I think DS used 6-9 and 9-12 months the longest. But since he's a summer baby at about a year he usually stripped himself down and ran around in a diaper if we were home, he was too active to let us dress him!
I'm preparing to have 1 wks worth of newborn and 1.5 of 0-3 on hand as well as 2-3 preemie size layettes/gowns. I'm keeping tags on all until closer to the date and will wash probably just a few at first to have ready, that way anything that doesn't fit can be exchanged or gifted later.
My last 3 friends all ended up having small babies and no preemie gear, so I want something on hand just in case, even though our guy is measuring big.
It's hard to predict. In my case the sizes always lined up with my daughter's actual age. She could fit newborn for about a month but I had 0-3 month in rotation from the beginning as well (she was 8 lbs at birth) and then started wearing 3-6 months when she hit 3 months, etc. I always found I had more clothes than I needed, but I have a large family on both sides so we got a lot of clothes as gifts. I think most people definitely err on the side of too much. You don't really need that much as you'll want to do laundry frequently anyway given the fact that most items will end up soiled with bodily fluids And definitely don't get lots of "fancy" outfits! They're fun for pictures or special occasions but your baby will probably mostly just wear onesies and jammies (especially in the summer). My April baby almost never wore pants until she was 6 months old. Also babies don't need shoes...everyone always seemed to give us baby shoes and most ended up completely unworn.
This is what I have so far. Some I bought on clearance, the rest have been gifts and I still have a shower coming up. Newborn: 5 onesies 1 sleeper 1 dress 2 pairs of leggings 1 pair of shorts
0-3 mo 2 onesies
3 mo 4 onesies 1 outfit
3-6 mo 6 outfits 8 onesies 1 sleeper 1 pair of jeans
6 mo 1 sleeper 2 onesies 1 dress
6-9 mo 5 outfits
9 mo 3 sleepers 2 outfits 2 leggings 2 onesies
12 mo 1 outfit
18 mo 3 outfits
24 mo 1 outfit

I would not get a lot of the newborn stuff because it might never fit. Or at least keep the tags on it and only pre-wash a couple things. Don't go crazy pre-washing all new clothes in general. Sizes 0-3 and 3-6 should be useful for most newborn babies. I personally prefer sleepers with zippers because lining up snaps at 2am is not fun, but some people prefer snaps because you can keep the top half of baby covered and open only to the waist. Our first son hated the gowns with elastic when we had to raise them up for diaper changes, but other babies don't care about elastic up on their tummies for a few minutes. You also won't need or really want to deal with complicated fancy outfits. Get some short sleeve and long sleeve onesies, some sleepers, some soft cotton pants and socks. After a few months, you will have a better idea of what sizes will fit what seasons and what kinds of clothes you prefer.
My daughter was in NB for 2 months. She was quite a little peanut. You really cannot tell. If you have the fund I'd get enough for at least a wash cycle. So, depending on how often you do laundry, have enough for that.
My SIL's 9 week old is already 16 pounds so keep in mind that some babies will be in NB for a while and others will jump to 6 months fast. Don't over stock. Amazon delivers in 2 days with Amazon prime or mom, and you won't have to leave the house. Also don't organize just by labels Gerber brand runs small. 0-3 is more like NB and so on. While some other brands run large.
The Gerber onesies and sleepers we have are so small! We have three Gerber onesies and three fiooted sleepers that are 0-3, So we do have some newborn size clothes as a backup! I definitely don't want to overstock. I'm buying bargains but all those bargains still add up in cost! I think we will buy a few more (non Gerber) 0-3 onesies and footed sleepers and then we will consider ourselves set for now.
I never purchased newborn clothes for DS. I think we had a few 0-3 onesies and sleepers, but we mostly just started with 3 month clothes. I've purchased only 3 month clothes for DD...I'd rather they just be too big for a couple weeks than spend the money, but that's my preference.
