Low progestrone levels

Hi ladies!

I'm having to start taking progestrone suppositories because my progestrone levels were low. I started spotting four to five days ago and it wasn't getting any better. My back and hips started aching and it was feeling like I was starting my period. So I called my doctor and they got me right in, did blood work and an ultrasound. This morning they called to tell me that my progestrone levels were only 3.8! I'm worried and hoping that the suppositories work. Anyone else have/had this issue and did it work for you?

Re: Low progestrone levels

  • I have not personally had any experience with them, but a very good friend has used them and I know they really helped her pregnancy!  Hope everything goes well for you!

  • Thanks! I'm hoping too!
  • I don't have any words of wisdom, I actually just got the call this morning that my OB wants me to use a progesterone as well. I wish I had asked for my test result numbers. FX for sticky babies!

  • 3.8 is rather low for progesterone at this point. During IVF treatment they like your progesterone to be above 20 before they transfer an embryo (so about 5 days after you would ovulate if you didn't need IVF). Hopefully suppositories will help you, but you should be prepared for more bleeding as they can irritate your cervix. Good luck!

  • How far along are you? It is low, but hopefully they caught it in time and the suppositories stop the spotting. I had low progesterone in my last 2 MC's so this time I started the suppositories at 6 DPO. Fingers crossed for you! Keep us posted!
  • I'm 5 weeks 3 days along...pretty early so hopefully that helps.

i was spotting for two weeks before they got my bloodwork results back. At my appointment I was 6 1/2 weeks and got the call at 8 1/2weeks that my progesterone was low (3.5). I immediately went in to get an ultrasound and the baby had developed just fine over the two weeks and I was put on progesterone. My spotting has stopped and everything is looking good with my little dumpling! I'm glad they caught yours as early as they did!
  • I'm on them as well and was with my last pregnancy too. They are a pain in the butt but obviously worth it. It's a fairly common condition. If you have another child after this one, most docs will give you the progesterone up front without testing for it again. I carried the prescription around a couple months waiting for the BFP.
  • That makes me feel better! Glad they caught it early too. Now just waiting on my next apt hopefully to see a baby on the ultrasound.
  • I used to work in a fertility pharmacy and the feedback I received from patients were overall positive. The suppositories are the most direct way for you to obtain progesterone and also the quickest way. It takes a couple days for the Iincrease. Continue getting beta tests with your doctor to be absolutely sure.
  • I thought it was so weird because last pregnancy my blood work showed it was low and they gave me pills for it, this time I have a new doctor and asked her about it up front and she said it really is a superstition more than anything and there is no real evidence stating raising levels of progesterone will actually keep a pregnancy going.... I thought it was really strange... she said if a patient wants the pills she wouldn't deny them or anything but she doesn't normally prescribe it. anyone heard of this??
  • @AmyReneT The way my OB explained it to me was that there is still a lot that is unknown about how Progesterone effects a pregnancy and at what levels we need to be worried. She did tell me that anything over 20 was great, anything between 10 and 20 was "grey area" meaning they don't know if its good and don't know if its bad, and anything below 10 is cause for concern because women tend to have low progesterone when they miscarry. My OB didn't suggest progesterone. I had to bring it up, but she gave it to me when I asked for it since my progesterone was still in the grey area but on the low side.
  • Also: progesterone wont help a pregnancy that is failing because of a chromosomal abnormality.
  • I used progesterone suppositories during my pregnancy with my daughter, and I made it to full-term. Prayers to you for a sticky baby!
