Baby Clothes

Hey ladies! This upcoming Saturday is my shower, and the following weekend DH and I are going to finish up shopping for LO! My question is, how many clothing articles of each size is reasonable? I know each baby grows at his/her own rate, but I'm looking for a good starting point. I'd like to purchase newborn-12M but MIL tells me not to buy too far ahead (all ideas are bad to her). What do y'all think?

  • It's hard to say how fast they grow. Some sizes were passed up with my 2 year old whenever she had a growth spurt. Also, it's  harder to say what size they'll be in according to the season if you have more than one season.

Also, as tempting as it is, leave tags on and receipts handy until after baby is born, only wash a day or two worth of each little size ahead of time. My nephew skipped not only NB but also 0-3 and came home from the hospital in 3 and 3-6 month. Unfortunately they had un-tagged and washed all the smaller clothes so they couldn't exchange any of it.

0/3 and 3 are the same thing though..
  • It's hard to say, I only buy ahead if I find a really good clearance deal off-season. Like this one has quite a few 6-9m fall/winter things because of winter clothes being in clearance.

DS followed the expected progression pretty well so I got really lucky with him. Plus, he was born firmly in the dead of winter so that helped as far as knowing what was going to be seasonally appropriate immediately. I don't think it's as easy with an April baby when you're in the Midwest like I am.
  • I am begging my mother to stop buying LO clothes already. I have an entire dresser full of random sizes and although it's partially awesome I don't have to buy him any clothes until he is like 1 (I'm not even joking) I'm pretty annoyed with the fact that I haven't really picked out any of the clothes my son will wear, and I HATE hoarding clothes. Fiancé does that. I don't need to start him off doing that early too.

MIL is right. I know 3 month Olds who have worn 9m clothes and my daughter spent 2 months in newborn stuff and could still wear 18m clothes at 2.5. All babies grow differently. Focus on newborn through 3 month to start but go easy on the newborn unless your side of the family have all been on the 5 to 7lb at birth end.

I like 7s. My first had horrible reflux so we changed her a LOT. 5 to 6 outfits a day. For this one I aimed for 7 sleepers, 7 onesies, 7 pair or pants for either size. There are a few extras like 1 to 2 hoodies and I got 2 cute little multi piece outfits (the ones with short and long sleeve options) for if we have to take her anywhere  (spoiler alert: we have to do tons of this) early on.

I spent so much on my first daughters wardrobe. She wore pajamas. Half the clothes weren't worn. A solid 1/4 were worn to snap a picture and then we were done.

Aim for comfort. Comfy baby is a happy (ier) baby.

I'm starting to have that problem too. I don't want to waste money on clothes if it's not needed, but as a mother, I would like to pick out more than just a couple outfits!

Do you mean 7 outfits daily, or 7 of each article in each size?

Not by Carter's sizing compared to most brands. :/ it's supposed to be, but in my experience Carter's flat sizing (NB/3/6) definitely falls between Circo and Gerber that have the ranges. Which is crazy frustrating.

  • I agree with the rest of the posts. My son was big (8 11) and wore newborn for 2 months. I have friends with smaller babies who skipped the size entirely. His head must have been big because he continued to be big, but always wore the exact size and still does, even though many kids wear the size ahead. Wait and see before you stock up!

  • I would wait to stock up because once baby is here you will have some idea of what will fit better. Some clothes are cut long and lean while others are cut stockier, and you won't really know which will be a better fit for your LO until after D-day (or even till they're close to size since they can chunk out and then grow long). We had some cute clothes for DD that barely got used because they were cut stocky and she's a stringbean, so they just never quite fit right. I learned to buy slimmer cuts.

  • When I was on a strict budget with DD1, I felt that 10 outfits/size was enough. I agree on holding off on bigger sizes to a certain extent. DS was in 12mos clothing at 4 mos, then wore 18 mos clothing for almost a year. My girls have been more "regular" in their growth.

And see I felt like Carters always ran true to size - Gerber ran very small and Circo was really big/boxy on DS as a newborn/0-3 range. Across other brands (Carter's, Koala Kids, Jumping Beans, ON, etc.) things were more consistent for us.
  • I also found summer clothing to have a little more give than winter on sizing because length is not as important. But I agree I wouldn't buy too ahead because you will inevitably end up with stuff you can't use. I have nb-6 months because some of the 6 month stuff I will use regardless of season (like cotton sleepers) and the few summer pieces I have are a little more forgiving on sizing in case he runs big or small but I figure he will get use out of them at some point between May and August. I think nb sizes are what I have the fewest of (maybe 6-7) and then a bunch of 3 month.
    BabyFruit Ticker}
  • I'm a FTM, so take this for what it's worth (aka not all that much), but I made sure to have some NB sizes (DH was a 5#3 baby, but was out of NB by the time he was 1.5 weeks, while I was 8#11 and in NB for a month), but have more 0-3/3 and 3-6 month clothes. However, I've only washed a handful of outfits from each size. The ones I chose to wash are the plainer ones, like the $6 pack of 5 white onsies that you can get at Walmart and a few pair of pants. That way, if something doesn't fit, at least I'm only stuck with the cheap stuff and can return or exchange the more expensive items.
  • I haven't gone through all the comments since there have been multiple threads asking this same question, so someone may have already mentioned this.

I know for sure Carter's (probably Oshkosh too) doesn't have a time limit on returns as long as you have the receipt. We've gotten DD1 a lot of clearance stuff super cheap at the end of a season in a size we think she'll be the next year. If it doesn't fit in 6-9 months no harm done.

The other thing I'll say is you have no idea what type of clothing is going to work best for you in 6 months, let alone a year. You may love onesies, you may hate them. I prefer normal shirts/pants/shorts/dresses because I think diaper changes are way easier. Yet I have friends that did one piece clothing for years.

Haha sorry that didn't come out very clear! 7 of each article! Her entire wardrobe newborn through 3 fits in one drawer with room to spare
  • I wouldnt buy ahead too much.  We had more newborn and 3 month stuff than what could handle or use. DD was also a slow grower after 9 month.  At 3 she's still in size 4 diapers, I realized a couple days ago she's been in them for about a year.

There were a lot of things we were given or bought that were too big and she "missed the season".  Also keep in mind people give gifts after the baby is born and it is usually clothes.

    My two cents worth:
If you are a FTM, you will get a TON of clothes 0-24 month size. I would hold off (except for maybe a few outfits) until you see what people get you. I also recommend asking for bigger sizes (if people ask). I discovered that I had SO MANY clothes, and some only got worn once, maybe twice.

Also, my daughter was not in the size according to her age. By age 1, we were already working our way into size 2 clothes. Now at 2 (Feb), she has been wearing size 3/4 since the fall. So it might be good to hold off (like some PPs said) until you know your child and their size. Some are big, and some are small, but we love them all ;).
  • We're 35 weeks and anticipating that we won't have it easy to get out of the house easily in the baby's first month. So over the past 6 months we've only bought baby clothes that were on sale or clearance, and this was also a way to have some feel good shopping without spending a lot. Clothing we bought was 10 newborn, closer to 20 of 0-3 month, and then smaller numbers for 6, 9, and 12 months, mostly things that could layer based on the weather changes. We removed tags and washed newborn - 3 months, again to save time later. We think we bought enough to wear at least once and if it doesn't get used, we're okay donating since we got things on clearance anyway. They would also be good to bring to a swap event or put on one of those facebook pages where people are in search of donations locally.

I just wanna share the cute fold over yoga pants I found today at Oshkosh! So cute and I only paid 5$ each. I got a pair in 9mo and a pair in 6 mo. The onzies with the bow in the back , pants and headbands were all on sale too! Keeping tags on just in case

    adorable!

  • Because we decided to not find out the baby's gender, we received little to no clothes at our showers. However, I was extremely lucky to have a friend who had a baby in September and she gave me all of her newborn - 6 mo clothes last month.  Because she also didn't know the gender so most of the clothes are neutral with maybe a leaning towards boy (though she had a girl).

That being said there were a few outfits I found on sale that I *had* to get. I figured if I only spent a little and bought mostly 3-6 mo the baby should be able to wear the outfits eventually.
