Re: Discuss Baby Names Here!! 2/22

  • We settled pretty easily on our girl name (Caroline Portia), but are spinning our wheels over a boy.

    Orrin?
    Giles?

Am I crazy and needing to go back to the drawing board?  Ugh, names are hard.

  • @AmberLiz99 , I think it's really pretty and not very strange. You might get some slight variation in pronunciation when people encounter it, but nothing extreme I wouldn't think.

I personally find Giles to be pretty awesome.
  • @AmberLiz99 I really like it. But I'm naming my baby an old name so it's up my alley
My kids are Henson and Elise, so I tend more classic/old too
My name is Alyse so Naturally I love your name selection
  • Pretty set on Henry Louis. My mom told me it sounds like he was born in 1800 and not 2016 haha, thoughts on the name as a whole?

Haha I like it. My mom said the same about my first daughter (Olive Rosemarie...in fairness yes Olive was really big in the 1890s and Rosemarie is after her great-grandma) but I love old names! Henry Louis is very regal :)

Louis is a family name too. I love olive though
  • @AmberLiz99 I like Aurelia a lot. It fits well with the siblings names. I work with someone with this name and she pronounces Ah-reel-yah. Idk if that's how you're pronouncing it or not. Like someone else said, you might see some variation on pronunciation and you/she will probably have to spell it. But it's still a great name.
  • @alysemciver Henry Louis is adorable.

  • As I've mentioned before, DH and I are having a hard time agreeing on names. We had picked a girl name before we even tried getting pregnant and somehow it got pushed off the list and we both forgot about it. MIL just mentioned the name a few days ago and DH and I looked at eachother like "oh yea!! Duh!" We both liked the name Ella from back before we even got pregnant. I'm not sure if it was because of the popularity or the lack of finding a good middle name that caused it to get dropped at some point. But now that we're at a point where we don't have a single name we agree on, Ella has been put to the top of the list. I'm not at the point yet where I'm like "that's the name" but this is the closest we've been to picking a name.

So I need middle name suggestions. Since Ella is still fairly popular/common and we have a very common last name, I want something different for the middle name. That elimates Ella Grace, Ella Rose, and such. DH likes Ella James but I'm not too sure how I feel about it. Any suggestions??
  • @MillerMama13 what about using your maiden name? Or somewhere that is special to you... like a town or place? That could give it originality with meaning instead of just picking something uncommon?

Not James. So tired of seeing people stick that on a girl to be "cool". Also it's very close to Etta James.

Try looking through your family trees, sometimes some really cool names can be found.

Another option,  go to the SSA and look at their lists. If you go back to the 90s and earlier,  some real fun and different names start to pop up once you get past the first 300-500.

I would try to avoid a name that ends in a long a like Ella though, for flow reasons.

My husband really likes the name Evie, I do as well, but I'm not sure it will be great later in life professionally. I know it can be short for Evelyn, but I'm not sold in that as a name. Thoughts on naming a child as a nickname/specifically the name Evie?
How funny I posted this same thing a few pages back! We are definitely calling our daughter Evie, but my husband wants her full name to be Evelyn. I don't see myself ever actually using the name Evelyn, but if it makes him agree on Evie then I guess I'll take it. I don't see a problem with just using the name Evie either.
I did daycare for a little girl named Evyanna or Evieanna but went by the name Evie.
  • I actually love the name Evelyn! Hadn't really considered it until reading this thread!! I think it's a beautiful first name, and it's adorable when shortened to Evie. I also really love the idea of Evyanna... it's unique, but easy to pronounce, and it seems like one of those names that would go really well with any middle name choices.
  • I have a question/want feedback on a name:

So DH and I are really liking the name Kallette.  We like Kallie as the nickname but aren't sure it would be a good grownup/professional name for her in the future as a stand alone name.  I like the variation of Collette with a Ka instead of Co, lending itself to the nickname.  DH is thinking it might work better with one L instead of 2, but I think that would make it sound like a long A like "kay" instead of a soft A like "kuh".  Thoughts?  We're also stuck on a middle name, but I'm leaning towards Rose.  Kallette Rose Sch***** (2 syllable last name).  Thoughts?

I agree the "ll" spelling is more obvious pronunciation-wise.

Honestly?  I'd go with Collette. It's close enough that Callie/Kallie still works and, Kallette looks made up. I'd also pronounce Kallette like Kah-let and reminds me of "towelette"

Similarly,  Calliope might work for you as well.

Marie is my middle name, & the middle name we would have used if we were having a girl...so, I'm partial to that one! ;)
    Both are lovely, though!

  • We are team green and we have family middle names picked out, but can't agree on first names.  We do have 1 girls name that we have been tossing around, but I don't think either of us are set on.  What are your thoughts on Constance Virginia?

We both still like the boy name we picked out when we had our daughter, but the first name is now at the top of the list of popularity and that really puts me off of it.  It's Jackson Herbert.

So I  think Constance is a nice name, with good nickname options and due for a comeback. But I don't care for it with Virginia.

After much debate we were able to agree on a first and middle name for baby girl, Quinn Harper.  Nicknames we've tossed around are Quinnie, Winnie and Q, we'll see what sticks!
Quinn is a lovely name but Quinny used to be an old fashioned term for lady parts in like the Renaissance era. Just something to think about...

Just a few we were throwing around. Opinions anyone?

  • I'm kind of loving Edith at the moment. Is that a total old lady name or could it work? Nadine is another old style one that I've been considering.

I also like Josie, but with the last name of Lopez I'm afraid people would try to pronounce it wrong.

Ya but you could call her jlo and does it get any better than that? (Creepily huge jlo fan my whole life) I like Edith more than Nadine personally and think you could do adorable nicknames if you're into that. Edie?! Love it

I think my favourite combo here would be Adelaide Estelle. Not crazy about Acadia or Hester.

Edith is cute! I love Edie as a nickname. Nadine reminds me of an actual old lady I know and I'm having trouble evaluating it without just thinking of her :)

Josie is ADORABLE but I see your concern about pronunciation. I don't know that it would dissuade me though. It's pretty cute.
  • Well, I guess we're set on Lucas for the first name and probably 95% set on Asher as the middle name.  Our son has started to refer to baby as "baby Lucas", since my husband did that in front of him a few times (and thus got his fn/mn order preference to be official), so we're also not able to keep it a secret.  Surprisingly, my mother hasn't said anything negative...yet.  She and my grandmother were really the only two I was worried about as far as criticizing the name.

My grandmothers name is Edith, and I had a friend from work, probably about age 23 who spells her name Edythe. Personally I like the latter spelling better. The name is ancient which makes it really cool.

Thanks for the input. I did more research on Kallette and it's actually a variant of the French name Kalet which means beautiful energy. Calliope sounds so southern bell to me, cute, but not for us.

Why not just make his middle name zapp? That way you can call him zapp and if he loves it, go with it but if he outgrows it the first name is more formal and can go on the resume in the future. Also, a much better name than Fry or Bender.

I can't find Kalette or Kalet on any of the main reputable name websites, just one or two random ones that list all sorts of made up names and spellings and that I personally wouldn't trust.  I also found an article on a hybrid vegetable from kale and brussles sprouts that they named kallettes.

I mean no shade, but I'm pretty sure the entire country of Greece just collectively rolled their eyes and wondered why.

I also have to agree with PP, none of the reputable name sites have Kalet listed. But Kaleth Morales was a Colombian singer.
  • Ok so we decided before we knew we were having a girl on a name. Irene Renee. Irene for H aunt, Renee for my mom. However, I also fell in love with the name Adeline (long I at the end). So, I've not mentioned it to H or my mom, but I was thinking of using it as the middle name instead. Thoughts?
