Sleeping Positions

Ok, I am dying!  I am a huge belly and back sleeper.  And my belly has just started to get uncomfortable.  That's out!  And I know we aren't supposed to sleep on our backs.  I got a body pillow and have been sleeping on my sides with the pillow wedged between my knees....but then my hips ache!  I just cannot get comfortable.  Any tricks you all are using to sleep????

Re: Sleeping Positions

  • I am having the same problems!!! Last night my back and hips where killing me from sleeping on my side!

  • Can you put the pillow on one side of your back so you're kind of turned and not just flat? I don't know how comfortable that would be but maybe It would work! I think most of the night I'm sleeping tilted because I can never get comfy!
  • I am having the same issue. It is usually my right hip for some reason so I try to sleep on my left side and that helps. i would just keep adding pillows in different areas (back or under your belly) to see what works.

  • Ugh, I feel your pain. I've been a stomach sleeper my entire life. While side-sleeping isn't horrible, I am definitely experiencing the same hip pain you mention. I find myself waking up every 2 hours or so to flip to the other side. I've tried every single pregnancy pillow - none of them did anything for me. Unfortunately I think this is just ho it's gonna be for me for the next 20 weeks :(
  • I feel you. I don't remember this becoming an issue until I was way farther along last time. I don't think I've slept good for a few weeks now, at this point I'm just used to it.

I know!!!  I feel like it started around 30 weeks before...not 16!  Maybe its the 3rd baby...my body hates me this time around!  LOL.  I may just sleep in the new baby recliner we just ordered.  Its so much better than the bed right now.  HAHA.  I will see BF in 6 months.  LOL
  • Same here...I always sleep on my back. I am constantly waking up on my back and moving to my side because I know we aren't supposed to sleep on our backs. It is so hard for me and I get no good sleep because I am always worrying or making sure I am on my side.
  • I build a pillow fortress. I have a Pillow in between legs from thighs all the way down to feet. Then snuggle a pillow under belly and between the girls. I also have a pillow behind my back. Hubby gets irritated he can't snuggle but momma needs sleep any way she can get it!! ;-)

  • I've still been sleeping on my back. When I attempted to sleep on my side, I always end up on my back because either my arm falls asleep or my hips start hurting. My mom suggested sleeping with a pillow inbetween my legs, but I haven't gotten around to actually trying.
  • I agree, it's frustrating! Plus it's hard to roll over to switch sides, and get situated again with the big body pillow to negotiate with. I am a big stomach sleeper too, and for me it was the boobs that started getting in my way before the belly (now the belly, too). I've been spending part of the night sleeping sort of on a diagonal, facing down but with one leg and arm kind of draped up over the body pillow. That lifts my body up enough to give my new appendages some room while I still get that back stretch that I need from stomach sleeping.
  • I've been struggling with this too. I keep rolling onto my back but now that I'm 18 weeks everything I read said I need to really stop doing that by now. Last night I didn't sleep at all because the hip pain was so bad from trying to sleep on my sides. Everything is sore today after trying to sleep like that.
  • Sleeping on my side without a pillow between my legs is when my hips hurt--maybe you need a thicker or thinner pillow? If your hips are stacked nicely, it shouldn't hurt. I am usually a side sleeper, but apparently I have developed a habit of rolling onto my back when sleeping, so I've been putting a pillow behind me so that if I do roll onto my back, I'm not completely flat. The Snoogle is pretty comfy to sleep with, but I also like to switch sides while sleeping, which is a pain to do when wrapped up with the snoogle.

  • I'm a back and belly sleeper all the way.

my midwife told me that if I fell asleep on my back that was fine! she said my body would tell me if I needed to roll over. plus you probably have your head propped up on at least one pillow so you're not laying totally flat.

I slept on my back my entire first pregnancy and had no issues at all.
  • listen ladies! the baby will be fine, sleep in whatever position makes you most comfortable! it certainly isn't healthy if you're not sleeping all all because you're trying not to roll on your back

  • Give me belly sleep or give me death!

So far that's still comfortable for me. Trying to get as much mileage as possible out of it this time around.
  • I got a u-shaped pillow, and I would hug the one side with it between my knees, but then I would use the other side to sort of lean back on.  So I was on my side, but it took the pressure off my hips.  I had so much hip pain with my first, it was awful - I even needed physical therapy to fix it.  However, we recently got a new mattress, and I have zero hip pain this time.  I know that's sort of an expensive fix, but clearly that was the issue for me!  I'm sure I'll need to pull my pillow out eventually, but I don't anticipate needing it for a while yet.

  • I was 8 when my mom was pregnant with my sister and she had a body pillow she used to sleep with. Somehow I ended up with it after that and have slept with a pillow between my legs ever since lol

I have been struggling a little bit to get comfortable but have also propped a pillow behind me to keep me from rolling back onto my back and that seem to work well!

  • Maybe invest in a nice 3" cushion for your mattress. We got ours from Costco and it has helped a lot with sleeping.

  • For me the pillow between the legs doesn't help the best. Instead I put the pillow next to me and then while laying on my side I turn and throw my leg across it (like you would on your partner if they were next to you). Then my body isn't perfectly side sleeping and it gets my top leg pretty parallel to the mattress. I shift once or twice a night instead of every two hours, and my hips/ legs are now doing fine! This video helped me figure out this better position for me:

  • I build a nice u shaped pillow fort and it helps. I also realized after staying at a hotel with a very squishy bed that a squishy mattress topper helps with the hip aches. I have found that the downside of my u-shaped pillow fortress is that the cats think I made it for them and I get pinned in one position.
