Throwing everything away.

Does anyone else have the urge to just get rid of so much? We are spring cleaning & I got rid of 3 bags of clothes, shoes, anything & everything we don't use! I feel so cluttered for some reason.

Anyone else in the same boat? It feels great, not going to lie!

Re: Throwing everything away.

  • Yes!!! And my husband doesn't like to throw things away. It's a serious problem!!!!

I used to do this every spring prior to pregnancy, however, I find myself just clearing out way more then I used to. It is so so nice. But now I need a nap :)
  • I did this a few weeks ago. Went through my closet and got rid of bags upon bags of clothing. Forced my husband to do the same but he only came up with a small donation pile. I also went through our 2 year old's closet, the bathroom closet....whew! I think some of it is panic that we need to fit another baby into our house soon, and I feel like we are running out of space already! I keep dreaming of throwing everything away and staying uncluttered, but I'm sure it'll build up again in no time!

I hate clutter.  I think about every three months I go through closets, pantry, etc and have a donation pile.

However, with baby coming, I have gone into OCD organization overload :)

  • Yes. We opened up our travel system and kept the box so I could fill it with stuff to donate. I can't stand clutter and I can't think of a time I've ever regretted getting rid of something.

My parents' garage looks like an episode of Hoarders so I'm pretty sure they gave me a complex, lol.
  • Yes everything must go!! My husband stops me half the time. I guess it's a balancing act. I love our cute little home, but definitely need to make more room for the baby.  :D
  • Love nesting! It's the only time I feel like cleaning and de-cluttering. I just pulled a lot of maternity shirts out of my closet that I never wear. (Long sleeve shirts. Why did I even buy them?) When I was pregnant with my first son I ditched 90% of my shoes. No regrets! But now DH has more shoes than I do. Lol

  • Yes! I'm not typically a "get rid of all the things" person, but it's how my nesting is showing up. I've been purging like crazy!

  • Yup! I went through weeks ago and got rid of so much stuff it was ridiculous! It feels so good to have less clutter around :)

  • My husband and I live in a fairly smallish house and both of us like organization and decreased clutter. So we go through often and create a pile to donate. I love how much we have decluttered the house and been able to focus on the things that make us happy. I went from a huge closet (full of stuff I didn't wear) to a very small closet with pieces that I like and that fit and flatter. And I have a huge shoe problem which was nice to finally cut down on. I feel like now when we decluttering it is to compensate for the baby stuff we are bringing in. Trying to stay somewhat minimalist with baby stuff so as not to get overwhelmed.
  • I just got done going through 3 closets and getting bags ready for donation. It feels great!
  • I really want to do this but I don't know where to start. There's SO MUCH CRAP. I'm a bit overwhelmed.
  • I've been trying and trying to declutter. My whole life feels crowded right now. I'm also in the same boat as some PP, where I have to drag my husband along. My big problem right now is sorting through my DD's toys. Some things I want to get rid of she just got for Christmas. My parents got her multiple big gifts that we just don't have room for. So, I feel bad donating them to goodwill so soon, and I know they'll notice they're gone next time they visit. Next year we're setting a Christmas rule for our children - no more than two presents each, and nothing larger than a coffee maker.
  • I feel like I constantly am declutttering. I threw out a lot of stuff, when I first found out I was pregnant. I need to nest some more though.

  • Me too!! I've been getting rid of everything I haven't touched in the last year, it's very therapeutic.

I go through crap when my husband is not home. He is such a hoarder, stemming from growing up poor I think, he has yet to notice the crap I have gotten rid of because none of it is stuff that is being used anyhow.
  • Yep! I'm gearing up to have an April garage sale!!!
  • We've been purging since November and I absolutely love it!

  • You ladies have inspired me to go on a serious de-cluttering rampage this week. We got rid of a bunch a few months ago, but there's still so much crap we don't use. Might as well put my week off to good use! :)

I'm with you that he really would have NO IDEA if things just went away, but when asked about it, it's life or death that he must keep said item. We have storage bins in the garage full of random wires that are so old because you never know when he might need one. (In the almost 4 years we've been together, he's never needed a cord from the bin!!!).

This morning I cleaned out one of the closets to move DS to the other room to put the new baby in his room. I rushed sooo fast to get everything thrown away because I didn't want him to see ;)
  • Seriously! And why did I wait until almost 29 weeks to want to scrub the grout of my tile floor?! I wish this nesting business had kicked in when I could still comfortably bend over.
I did this 2 weeks ago...it was so satisfying, but yeah...the belly really does hinder this task!

I always tell him if we need it in the future we can buy another, but unfortunately I can not buy more sanity after I lose mine from all the extra junk in our house. Thing I hate the most: all the free stuff he finds on Craigslist...
  • We are living with my grandma to help take care of her (she's in a wheelchair). My uncle and his girlfriend lived here before completely stuffing the two spare rooms full of sh*t. So before we moved in we cleared everything out of those. This weekend we took all their crap that was laying EVERYWHERE outside to the junkyard. Plus burned anything we could! We filled our truck 12 times if that's any indication of the sh*t they left for her. This week I will be cleaning and throwing out 90% of her laundry room. After that the place will have no more THANKFULLY!!
  • Same here! I am normally a bit of a hoarder myself but since I'm home all day I need projects and the nesting/OCD has kicked in. Plus knowing that a baby will take all of time time makes it easier to convince myself that I will never again read all of the articles I used in my thesis... I'm part of a "buy nothing" group on Facebook and it's awesome because I hate throwing away stuff I know someone else could use. My husband hates all of my stuff but still complains when I leave things on the porch for people to pick up. He calls it the garbage club and often asks if the garbage fairy is coming by to pick things up lol. You think he'd be happy!!!

Literally pick one thing to start going through. A box, a closet, a drawer. As you clear out put things in piles: keep, definitely get rid of, and not sure. Put the keep stuff away in a place made for it (a place for everything and everything in its place), throw away the get rid of pile or put in a bag for donation and then put the bag in your car. The unsure of pile, go through it again and see if you can decrease it in to these same piles. Purging is seriously addictive and as soon as you get one thing done you will want to do another. Also, research has found that less clutter in your living space makes people feel less cluttered in their minds and overall happier, more content with what they have, and calmer.
  • I'm working on my kids clothes now, I have a donate and sell piles of stuff. I'm not usually a very organized person, but we just put the boys in the same room so we had to decrease their clothes and toys some. I also started the nursery today. Just putting the clothes away so they're not sitting in bags in our guest room closet. I didn't realize how much stuff we had when I started!

  • Yup.  I just cleaned out the closet in the ex-guest room turned nursery and got rid of a bunch of stuff in there.  I also cleaned out my makeup drawer, some purses I haven't used in a few years, some clothes.  I want to organize the garage.

This!  I feel the exact same way.  I started about 10 months ago and never looked back.  With me being ill lately, I haven't been able to clean much of anything but I'm hoping once I'm feeling better I can get back to it.

  • I've always liked to organize but now that spring break has hit, that's all I want to do (I feel like a kid in a candy store)!  This week, I am going through my entire home, top to bottom clearing out clutter and deep cleaning everything.  I've already organized my entire upstairs since it rained all weekend (I had plans to deep clean the garage) and tomorrow I'm tackling the basement.  The only downside is that I get tired easily so I clean for an hour or so and then sit, and then start cleaning again.  Hopefully, this urge to clean doesn't go away soon, I love waking up to a clean and organized house :)
  • I've been organIzing and setting aside a donation pile. We need to make space for baby stuff!
  • Yesssss. But it's definitely much needed over here. Yesterday I donated a garbage bag full of clothes (all mine) and sold another garbage bag's worth. Today I'm tackling my toddler's closet. Nothing is safe.
  • I do this on a regular basis and it feels great! Every holiday my son will be getting gifts, I make him pick 5 things to give away ... Then I go behind him and toss out or donate 5-10 more. It's seriously satisfying every time!!

Buy nothing group?! That sounds cool I need to look into it. :) my husband just chucks stuff without even asking me. Some stuff like a brand new cooler we had is in the dumpster. That stuff I feel bad about but not anything else haha.

Yeah! Just search your city name and buy nothing. There are a million of them out there. I have to actively fight against my hoarding tendencies, you'd think I'd lived through the great depression or something! I just feel like throwing out things that are not sellable but are still usable is still a waste. It makes me feel better because I know there are a lot of low income families in my area that don't have the money for new things like we might. You just post a picture of what you are giving away and a description, then people comment when they're interested and you PM to make pickup arrangements. I usually just leave stuff on my porch when I go to work and they're gone to a good home by the time I get back! Win-win :)

ETA that it's also a great community-building thing. One time I posted that I needed a cupcake carrying case for a baby shower because I didn't want to buy one just to use it every couple of years. I posted on the site asking if someone had one they could lend me and 3 people offered! So I got exactly what I needed, didn't have to spend a dime, and don't have to keep it and store it!

I've heard that - but I also get strangely anxious throwing shit away like - what if I need it later??!?!

I think this week I'll just start with the crap that's in the closet of the nursery since that absolutely needs to go/be moved.
