April 2016 Moms

Back to April!

Hey Ladies,

Due to my GD diagnosis I am back to the April 2016 thread as my Doc let me know he will be having me induced as soon as Baby Girl reaches between 8-8.5 lbs. So anywhere between April 11- April 29 Baby Girl will be making her grand appearance. We've been having out fetal assessments and she is already 4.5 lbs at 32 weeks. Is anyone else in the same boat? What are your feelings on being induced and opinions on what is best....natural or having main medication?

I'm very mixed about being induced, I thought I was going to be able to walk around and cope with the pain to the best I can without medication. I found out after our prenatal classes this past weekend that I will be bed ridden the whole laboring process as it's the hospitals policy.

Please share any experiences! I don't know anyone who's ever been induced before and am open to hearing the good and the bad. Thanks ladies!

  • Weird policy! I have GD and have been managing with diet pretty well till last week. Nightly numbers are high... But I'm 37 weeks and they said if all remains the same, I just won't be allowed to go past my due date... This may be a march baby after all.

Wow, I would be switching doctors and hospitals. I don't understand why an 8# baby would be cause for induction. Is there something else going on that puts you at higher risk? My baby measured 5#7oz two and a half weeks ago at 33 weeks and my doctor is unconcerned given how off those estimates can be.

I also don't understand the being bed ridden for induction. You'd probably be in bed for short periods of time if you're receiving pitocin (although I'd think you could walk around with your IV drip even then) and certainly after receiving an epidural, but I don't see why you'd need to be in bed the rest of the time.

All that aside...I'm in the same boat as you as far as preferring to go without an epidural. But, I am open to the possibility especially if an induction becomes necessary. Everything I've read/heard indicates that contractions with pitocin are much more intense.

  • The only time I was bed ridden during my induction was when they put in the cervadil and I had to lay down for 2 hours and when I got my epidural. I was able to move as much as I could with the monitors between that. I would definitely be asking questions because no way would I have made it if I would have been bed ridden.

  • Hmm I would talk to your doctor about being required to be bed ridden during induction.  Now with that being said, when we were induced with DD1, our hospital required the baby to be monitored once Pitocin was administered and we tried walking around quite a bit, however the monitor would not stay in the right spot, so we ended up staying in the room and in bed because of that.  Good Luck!
  • I have a long list of questions for my Doc for my appointment next week. I was under the impression that once I've been induced and the labor begins I should be able to go about it like anyone else. I'm really hoping this is the case as it's something I feel would comfort me during the process and make it more memorable with DH as he'll be more involved with helping me.
  • I'm being induced in 2 weeks (39 weeks) due to bp but they never told me I will stuck in bed. I'm going in Monday evening to have the gel applied and then they will send me home until the next morning or until my labor progresses, which ever comes first.   I have been going back and forth on the epidural...I don't want to be in too much unnecessary pain but at the same time, I know once I get it that I'm stuck in bed.  I am going into the whole experience with an open mind and I'm just going to listen to my body.  If I were you, I would definitely question it more and find out exactly why they won't let you be mobile.
  • I was definitely not bed ridden when I was induced. I walked around my room, bounced on a birthing ball, took a few baths, and did some squats.

I was annoyed that I was being induced, but I knew it needed to happen because of my pre-e. I went without pain meds though.

  • I just can't believe any hospital would have a policy like that.  Obviously there are circumstances where being in bed is necessary, but if none of those arise, why stay in bed?  I hope you get some clarification at your appointment.
  • I literally never even thought about getting up and doing things when I was in labor with DS. Granted, my entire induction process from IV to delivery was 5 hours and pitocin contractions were stupid strong. I got an epi about halfway in and fell asleep. Now that you mention it though, I didn't even know what hospital policy was if I had wanted to get up at the time.
  • I was induced and spent zero time in bed until I got an epidural 12 hours after my labor got underway (okay, I layed down to have my water broken). Hopefully you misunderstood.
