Sounds odd but ...pain on one side of my upper butt?

At the beginning of the week I had a pinching sensation at the very tip of my lower back. When I went to my ob she said to just do some yoga, hot baths, etc. Well after I did none of those things, two days later that goes away and now I have this pain on the one side of my butt in the upper area. If I'm standing or sitting still, it's non existent. If I move at all, either bending down, putting my weight on that side, arching back, changing how I'm sitting, even walking, it hurts enough to get a reaction out of me. Has anyone experienced this or have some advice on what to do?

  • Sounds like sciatic pain. Stretch a lot, ice helps (not heat! Will inflame the nerve more!). Rest when you can.

  • YES!! For me it's so bad that sometimes I can't walk. Like someone is stabbing me in the butt. I asked my mom about it (she isn't a nurse or anything, just had three kids so I trust her) and she said that your siatic nerve can get stuck between muscles sometimes, so when you move you're just inflaming the nerve more and then it can't slip out on its own.
I did pigeon pose in yoga (laying down), sat in a chair with my hurt leg ankle across my opposite knee, and sat on the floor for about 20 minutes with my feet together but not forcing my knees down. It helped a lot. It didn't totally go away but it made it manageable.
  • I've had it on and off in my right butt/hip. It feels like what I've always considered to be a pinched nerve. Tried massage and yoga, it comes and goes.
  • Yup, it's the sciatic nerve. It runs from your low back down your leg. Lots of work on my yoga ball and floor exercises. Also making sure I'm not sitting at my desk or on the couch for too long. It's not a fun pain to have :-(

  • Yes! It's a hard-to-describe area, lol. I've been getting it off and on for a couple months in my left side. Prenatal massage helped a bit.
  • As PP said, it sounds like sciatica. Going to the chiropractor helped me immensely.

  • I have had this start up recently on my left side...in the beginning of my pregnancy around 8 weeks it was on my right side. Through physio and massage it became better and at 12 weeks when baby moved the pain went away for good. Now at 32 weeks it's back and i feel more painful than before...i am doing the warm baths and stretching but it doesn't really help me...
