Nursing bras

Okay ladies, time to talk boobs. I know pregnancy is time for the "titty fairy" (just learned this moniker from the People are Strange thread) to visit. However, it doesn't always visit people at the same time. I started this pregnancy as a DD, lost 25 pounds from HG, and never really experienced new growth. That being said, how does one know when the right time is to buy nursing bras? I'm afraid to buy some and then post-delivery, gain two sizes with milk. Any advice on when to pull the over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder trigger?

Re: Nursing bras

  • I've already bought some, but I'm assuming my boobs will behave the same as last time. I bought a couple off Amazon that are stretchy fabric, so it can expand when my milk first comes in because for me that's when they're the biggest. I also made sure the one "fancy" one I bought already was on clearance just so I'm not spending a fortune. Nursing tanks were good for me as well, but I'm not that well endowed to begin with lol and only got to a C cup when I was engorged. Hope that helps somewhat.

I would buy a couple of stretchy ones. A size bigger worked for me. But only a couple to get you through the first few days and when you find your true size and what features you want in a nursing bra invest in more. Personally I have started the search for my desired bra now.... It was a pumping tank from target and I can't find the damned thing anywhere in store or online. I hate that all the pumping bras you see are those stupid strapless corset looking things instead of day wear bras. As a mom who exclusively pumps changing my bra to pump every 3 hours is idiotic at best lol.
  • I looooooooveed the Bravado Body Silk Seamless bra. I think I bought a couple towards the end of week 34/35, and they were fine when my milk came in. I think I went up about a cup size or two when it was fully in....not sure if that helps at all!
  • I've heard your boobs around 6 months pregnant should be the same size as your boobs a few months after you've given birth and they're "stabilized." But, I'd suggest getting a bra that covers a range of sizes (small, medium, large) instead of a set band/cup size. I was easily a cup size different between the morning and evening the first month or so. Also, bras that were most comfortable when I was pregnant were the most uncomfortable thing imaginable when I was nursing. I'm in desperate need of some new bras but I might just buy an affordable regular bra to get me through the next 3 months. My favorite nursing bra was the Bravado Body Silk Seamless Bra (make sure you get butterscotch, not ivory if you're looking for a nude bra).

  • Also who wants to pay $105 for a bra???
  • Haha!!!! I never even noticed she wasn't attached lol!
  • I hate normal bras as it is..... I'm going to be like a kid being dragged to get a haircut when I finally cave to go get bras.

  • @sdLindenberg- to be honest, most nursing bras are lovely and stretchy and glorious after the confining nonsense that are regular bras.
  • I'm still dying at that picture!
  • I'm still dying at that picture!
It's like a train wreck. How did they get them to just....stay there? Are they photoshopped in? Taped to her boobs?
  • I'm also a DD, but have small band size. Pre-pregnancy I wore either a 34D or a 32-34DD. My boobs have not really grown at all, maybe slightly fuller, but I'm still wearing my old bras. I also haven't gained much weight at all, maybe 5-7 pounds at best, and it's all in my uterus. I bought a few nursing  tanks (I'm actually wearing one now) and it's pretty comfy. The medium for me is a little big now, so hopefully that will be good for later when my milk comes in.

I'm a FTM so I may be completely wrong.

  • I saw that picture and initially didn't see the comment about it being ridiculously priced and was TOTALLY side-eyeing you @Tawny87, thinking you were recommending that one.  I'm so glad that you're actually a rational human being!
  • With my first I had my mom pick up a two pack from Walmart/target telling her a estimated size to hold me over bc I didn't have any idea what to buy before my supply came in. After I got out of hospital I ordered some from motherhood maternity that were actually comfy (also got lucky it was buy 3 get 1 free lol) and lasted. I still have them and if they work again great if not I hope they'll tide me over until I order new.
  • Nursing bras and I don't get along. I have yet to find a reasonably priced one that is in my size in my 28 combined month nursing. By baby #2 I just got a normal bra with no lining and no padding and pulled it down. I would maybe buy one or two around 35 weeks to get you through and then once your supply regulates a little go buy more.

  • Cake bras are the way to go! I loved them last time and will get a few more. So comfortable!! They are on Amazon and at Nordstrom.
  • I got a size larger bamboobies nursing bra and a Lamaze bra. They are a lot like sports bras by not as tight and very comfy. They probably wouldn't work for large-chested ladies though.
  • Thanks ladies!

They have bandeaus that are much more reasonably priced, lol.

I got one of these for a friend as a shower gift (she registered for it) and I bought a big, sparkly, fluffy flower to clip onto it so she could still feel pretty while pumping, lol.
  • Medela gave me a voucher for a free one,
mine is black and makes me feel like Elsie the cow.
  • I have a stretchy bralette one that I've been wearing as my regular bras don't fit.

I ordered a few sized ones from amazon of off-brand, higher rated ones to try out (free returns) because i don't like the cut on the bralette.

Once my supply is established and I know BFing will work, I'll invest in some nice ones. I have a Bravado from DS but i didn't really like how it fit me.

For a pumping bra, the simple wishes one is awesome.
DS 9/2/13 was a BFP from an IUI!
Triplets due 6/29/16 also from an IUI!

Haha!!!!! I'm the cheap ass who doesn't want to pay more than 20 for a bra lol!!!!

Side note: I saw the same bra listed for $193 on Amazon right after it! Is it made of gold????
  • I'm wondering about this too. I don't like to pay a lot of a bra though!
  • Last time I bought 3 cozy ones -https://www.motherhood.com/mobile/Product.asp?Product_Id=97575Z30120&MasterCategory_Id=MC13 - I could sleep in because leakage was serious and I HAD to have nursing pads on 24/7 for the first few weeks! Then I bought two actual ones for when I finally left the house. Lol. But I didn't need actual size-is-super-important ones until after baby came. I say buy one in the size you think you'll need and keep the tags on them, meanwhile use the cozy ones.

I hated them and found lifting up my shirt and hooking and unhooking it to be ridiculous.  It was much easier for me to wear a sports bra I could easily move up and then quickly pull back down.
  • My boobs grew like 3 full cup sizes, So i opted to buy a few nursing bras as i needed to buy new bras. But now im realizing even those might end up being too small when these things are also filled with milk! Oh the titty fairy, a blessing a curse.

PSA: I did some serious bra searching today. For starters I went to Cacique part of Lane Bryant for a day wear bra for the rest of this pregnancy and for days I work. I am so stoked with what I found. Big boobed ladies, I must say I am so jelly with how well made and supportive your bras are. Also, I had been in search FOREVER for the pumping tank I had with my girls. I finally found it on target online for $25. I have yet to see a pumping tank for under $45 anywhere, and who the hell wants to wear one of those pumping bustiers?! They kind of look like a torture device of some kind and totally impractical.
  • Did you find a nursing bra at cacique in the store? How much was it?

I do believe Soma carries nursing bra's & tanks. I'm a size G now. Having the hardest time finding anything for this size. Buy Buy Baby carries Motherhood Maternity. Bought a nursing bra there in a G. Not sure if true to size. Pricy too...

I didn't see any at the actual cacique but the lady said they have a selection online. I just bought a general bra there that I can wear when I go back to work. I can't pump at work anyhow so I just bought a normal one. The general bra I bought which is pretty structured was $54.
  • Yeah, I get my regular bras there. I'm a HUGE fan of the full coverage style. 42ddd here.
  • We have a small place in the Midwest called Allure that specializes in having basically any size of everything you would need.  I recently bought a couple regular bras that they will then convert to nursing bras.  They said they can do it in under 24hrs.  Normally I am a 34G...i think I will have to pick up one or two more bras either right before I deliver or right after, since I still have to account for milk coming in.  Found a really nice wireless one for about $45... Which in the realm of larger bras is kind of a steal.

FTM, so I'm taking in the advice here from you ladies in the know.

Just wanted to add my friend got frustrated with her hands-free, strapless, pumping bra (Medela?), and just cut two holes in an old sports bra Mean Girls-style. Said it worked great pumping for both of her kiddos, and was a cheap option.
