Newborn Photos

So, have you booked newborn photos? They say the best time is between 3 and 13 days old. I found an awesome photographer, but I'm not going to lie- they are very pricey. Check out this photo she did in her gallery. So cute!!!! I just booked our session.

Re: Newborn Photos

  • Very cute!

Our hospital collaborates with a photo studio that visits every room. However, I am planning to have my husband do his own shoot. He's semi professionally trained and we honestly can't afford that sort of luxury at the moment.

Enjoy your photo shoot though! :)

  • Very cute. My mom does photography on the side and does our family photos, so she's doing ours. I can't wait.
  • That photo is so adorable!

I think this would be a great time to reach out on social media and ask if anyone is aware of/has a professionally trained photographer in their family or realm of friends you could speak with. I see posts like this on my Facebook from time to time and they seem to yield positive results.

  • I have some insane idea that I will be able to take at least a few nice photos myself in the first couple of weeks, since I have at least some rudimentary skills with a nice camera. But I also might just spring for the cost of having our wedding photographer come back and do a lifestyle shoot with the newborn, because then I can be in them too, and don't have to worry about whether or not I'll have energy to take them myself. In which case, I probably should get on top of scheduling that - just not sure how to do that when I don't know when the baby will show up!

And just because I'm feeling contrary, I'm going to throw out there that I think that picture is absurd - hopefully it was one of many more nicely done pictures, because it looks technically well-done and the baby is adorable, but it's bothering me that she looks like just another prop in the midst of all those plush dwarves. Reminds me of the scene in ET where he is in the closet with all the other stuffed toys and kind of blends in.
  • I regretted not doing pro shots with DS1 so we are going to splurge on this one. Plus we can use these for our holiday cards if we can get a good family shot.
  • We used the hospital photographer with our first, and I will do the same again this time. It was hassle free, one less thing for me to accomplish in the first weeks with a newborn!

  • We're doing a lifestyle type shoot at our house about a week or so after she's born. We both aren't a fan really of the posed stuff and we wanted something that would also capture the moment of being new parents itself with us in the pictures in addition to pictures of just the baby.
  • I am a photographer myself, so a professional newborn shoot is a very high priority for me. I told my husband before we even started trying that this would be something we would be spending a lot of money on and to just be prepared! They are only so little for such a short time and I don't want to miss that.

We booked a combo maternity/newborn package with a wonderful collegue of mine and just did the maternity shoot last week. The newborn shoot will be done within a week or so of delivery.

Since it's not as important that my husband and I are also in the pictures for other shoots, and I won't be as exhausted, I'll be doing her other stages (3mo, 6mo, 9mo, 1yr) at my own studio. Except for maye a family shoot around Xmas time for some holiday cards. :)

For whoever asked how scheduling works: You book the session ahead of time with your photographer and they will either put a tentative session date in around your due date (which you just reschedule if baby is really early or late) or they put a note in their calendar to keep some spots open for you and you just schedule as soon as you get home from the hospital. You DEFINITELY want to book this before baby comes, or you A) may be too late to get a true newborn shoot because your photographer is booked, B) you'll have so much going on and be so tired that you just won't get around to booking anything at all (I'll do it tomorrow, I'll do it tomorrow...) and you'll miss your chance, and C) it's a lot easier to budget for that NOW!

  • We just did JCPenney with DS1; they were fine, but this time we are splurging on a real pro.  We just did maternity/family shots with her yesterday and for newborns, she does a package where she'll do a shoot at newborn, 6 months and 1 year.  I'm excited!

  • Our hospital has a photographer, and we are totally splurging on that :)
We have friends and family who are wonderful photographers as well, so I'll be using them once we get home for something special.

  • Our hospital has a photographer that comes around too but it's about $400 and all the pics are basically the same. Sooo my husband is going to do them. He's not professional by any means but he's done this as a hobby for a long time. He did our maternity pics and I thought they came out well. We'll see :). I do love that snow white pic!!!
  • DD was in the NICU for 2 weeks then home for 2 weeks then in children's hospital for 3 weeks. We didn't get her pictures done until she was 3 months old and we used JCPENNY. They were fine and I was happy with them. I was more pissed at the photographer bitching about her not being a newborn and therefore harder to work with. He sang a different tune when I explained that she just got to come home from the hospital. So rude though.

  • The hospital I'm delivering at has a photographer to do newborn photos. Though I'm a bit skeptical as they said the sessions last like 10-15 minutes. I'm under the impression that out-of-hospital newborn shoots generally can last a few hours. We're still leaning toward the in-hospital route, but we'll see...
  • I just booked a maternity shoot and newborn shoot last week. It's only $450 total (for both sessions) and we get prints of the best pictures and a fully edited disc of all the pictures. They are both one hour shoots I believe (the newborn may be longer, but I didn't get as much info about that). I thought this was extremely reasonable. You should definitely shop around before choosing.
