EBF baby won't take bottle

so I thought DD would take a bottle after trying the MAM bottle. She took it one day without a problem. Now she won't take it. I have tried the medela one, the Tommee tippee and the MAM bottle. DD doesn't take them. I'd like to go on a date with DH or be relaxed knowing she'd take a bottle without a fight.
Any other bottles I should try?
How did EBF moms get LO to take a bottle?

i feel trapped and have this feeling that DD won't ever take a bottle

Any help would be great

What have you tried besides bottle brands? Nipple flow might make a difference. With both my kids (I introduced bottles with both of them myself) I found the biggest difference was the position I held them in. I started out with them sitting upright, their back to my belly, then gradually worked toward being able to hold them sideways on my lap. If I or anyone else would try to hold them similarly to how I would to nurse they'd just get frustrated and want to nurse.

ETA DS took Tommee Tippee with a size one. DD started with Dr Browns with a preemie nipple but now is on Avent Natural with a size 0 nipple.

  • Try the bfing group there's tones on this topic. You could try a cup or sippy.
  • Have you been trying to give the bottle to her, or has someone else? DD would not take a bottle from me, and would barely take one if I was even in the house. But once I was gone she took one from my mother and it has improved since. I still don't giver her bottles but DH can even if I'm around. Also try different holding positions. DD won't take a bottle I cradle position (how I hold her when I BF), but will be fine if she's held sitting up. So far she'll take Dr Browns and Avent Natural.

  • We started when he was about a month old. I never give him bottle my husband always does.  At first we just gave him one a week to get him used to it. We use Dr Brown and have no issues, of course my little is very easy going. He eats from bottle now with daddy while I'm at work and he breast feeds while I'm home and during the night with no problems with the transition.

Maybe it has to do with the nipples? I have friends who told me not to buy to many bottles or pacifiers until I knew what my baby would like. He was fine with both brands first try we never had to try anything else. But like I said I believe that is because he is super easy going and just goes with the flow.

I guess I would suggest having your Husband try feeding the bottle not you. And keep trying the different brands until baby is happy. I was also told that buy buy baby will take back bottles if baby doesn't like them. Which I was very surprised because bottles can be expensive.

    Good luck!
  • We like Como Tomo bottles. She just started rejecting Dr. Browns but will take these.
  • DS took avent naturals until he was about a month and a half old and then started gagging on them.  We tried dr Browns and he hated those too.  He ended up taking the munchkin latch.  He will only take what is necessary to take the edge of being hungry though (about 2.5 ounces) and just wait till I get home.

My DD2 was like this as well. I think some babies just don't like bottles.

My other three have all really liked the Playtex Drop-In bottles and took them on the first try.

  • Como tomo!
  • I've heard many great things about tommee tippee closer to nature bottles. To me the nipple really does resemble the breast the most out of all brands. Read the reviews on it and many EBF babies have no issues!

  • My LO took to Avent Naturals with size 0 very quickly at 4 weeks! He likes to be flat on his back spread eagle while feeding! :)
  • I'm in the same boat - DD won't take a bottle whatsoever. Everyone keeps giving me great advice, and I've tried 9 different types of bottles, but the bottle doesn't matter because she doesn't even attempt to suck on it. She lets me put it in her mouth, and then just stares at me. If I try to get her to take it latch-style a-la breastfeeding, nothing happens. I've been trying since she was 3 weeks old. For what it's worth, there was one day that she sucked a little on a Dr. Brown's bottle at 3 weeks old, but that was before I ever attempted a pacifier. Once I tried that, and she didn't know what to do with it, she has never sucked on a bottle since.

I have tried every trick in the book to no avail. I've accepted that it's likely to never happen. My friend's daughter is 9 months old and won't take a bottle, so she drinks out of a sippy cup. Before that, when she was in daycare, she would go all day without eating and just eat all night.

I hope you have better luck than me!

Yes this is my LO as well, I think once she can the cup is the answer
  • I've heard people say the Minbie worked when they wouldn't take anything else.
  • My advice is to just keep trying, preferably when baby is in a decent mood. We EBF & attempt 1 bottle a day. Started at 5w with one bottle every few days & increased our attempts slowly. At 13w she takes one no problem, but it wasn't easy. We had to try everyday & I wasted a lot of milk when she refused. But it was so worth it. Now I can leave her with my MIL once a week for a few hours with zero worries.
