Baby Monitor Choice

I am hoping this isn't a repeat question (I tried searching but am mostly a mobile user so I may have missed it) but I'm wondering what you fabulous ladies are doing for a baby monitor?

I was already borderline paranoid about things and thinking I wanted a video/movement/sound monitor before we had any of the scare of LO getting sick and almost passing away. Now, I'm working to not be anymore paranoid than I already was but am struggling. My main fear is SIDS and that's where I wonder if a movement monitor would help give me piece of mind...

Does se anyone have experience with any monitors that provide the movement feature? Or other FTMs how are you deciding between all the options available?

  • I have just started thinking about this! Don't have anything to contribute yet but as soon as I do I will post here!

  • We are definitely getting a movement monitor. We're going to get one that goes under the mattress for at home and also one of the portable ones that clips onto baby's diaper for if we go somewhere. Here is why:

A family friend had their second little girl and she was sleeping in her crib in her own room (I believe she was about 5 months old). Mom woke up in the middle of the night and just had a weird feeling so she went to check on her and baby wasn't breathing. She screamed for her H and started CPR while he called 911. Luckily they were able to resuscitate her and she ended up being okay. The hospital couldn't find anything wrong with her and they said it more than likely would've been labeled SIDS if she passed. Needless to say they went out and bought a movement monitor and so did my cousin and his wife for their LO. I don't mean to scare anyone just giving my input on why we are getting a movement monitor since the store hit so close to home
  • FTM here, but I'm buying the Angel care movement monitor off a friend of mine and I've registered for the Nest Cam for a video monitor! They both seem to have good reviews.
  • FTM...we registered for the Vtech - VM333 - Safe&Sound - Pan & Tilt Ful Colour Video Monitor. A few of my friends have the same one & are very happy with it. I had looked at the Angel care movement monitor but thought that would cause me to stress out too much, but now I'm second guessing our choice.

We have this one. I really like it. Only negatives are 1) intereferes with our wi-fi, 2) the antenna cover has broken off twice now. First time, the company replaced the monitor for me. Second time, I decided to just hot glue it back on and it has lasted so far.

I noticed a newer version came out recently where the antenna looks more sturdy and it claims to not cause wi-fi interference, you may want to check it out! I really want to buy it, but can't justify it since ours still works fine.

    The nest
We have both of these in DS's nursery.  I like having two in case one goes out, and also the Nest monitor lets me look in from my phone or computer when I'm at work or out somewhere.  I will be doing the same with LO.
  • Im getting a movement (angelcare, clip or sock one) and a video. I just need to find out distance ranges for the video. We have a large house and I want one that has the best range and that info is proving hard to find!!! If you have a video and it works over an extended distance I would love to hear!
  • My recommendation is do the research for what is best for you.  I am definitely paranoid, my kiddo slept in my room until he was 6 months and then I still never slept.  I have both a regular monitor and a video monitor.  The regular monitor is nice as the lil one gets older.  I received both off my registry so that you can always register for both.

  • after some research and a few suggestions, we have decided to go with the iBaby monitor.

I had this and ended up taking it back. I had a few nights where the baby was screaming in his room and the alarm wasn't going off that there was noise. Then also it lights up all these blue lights in the dark and it can be kind of weird. We had it in a corner and the wall would be flashing blue lights all night...kind of weird and distracting when you're going for complete darkness.

Other than that, it's a cool concept, I just didn't feel comfortable with it.
  • My buff has the angel care for her daughter. They really like it. The only downside is that if you pick up baby and forget to turn off the monitor it will alarm. I'm planning to get one of the clip on breathing monitors and a separate video/sound monitor. Since baby will start sleeping in a bassinet next to me we probably won't use the regular monitor until she's in her own room.

We have the cheaper of the Motorolla video monitors and have a large house and the monitor still works outside while doing yard work or shoveling snow.

  • We have a nest that we currently use to see what our doggies get in to during the day and registered for a vtech model for listening only. Will likely get another nest, one in the living room and one in the babies room. I like the nest because we can see it remotely so if either of us are at work we can see baby and talk through it. Confuses the crap out of the dogs when we talk to them while we aren't home. They have figured out the talking is coming through the camera now though and just glare at the camera when we do it. I also love that the nest records the stuff so if we wanted to see what happened (baby crying, something fell, etc) we can watch the clips.
  • @MrsB8214  - That is exactly why I feel that it's one of those (at the very least) "better safe than sorry" and you really just never know what will happen so I'd rather be prepared!

@DeePaddy24 - My husband is fearful that it will end up making me more paranoid/stressed rather than give me some peace....I'm not sure who is correct on this one!

Thank you everyone! I appreciate your input :)
  • @shannonrnbsn the snuza is the one my cousin and his wife used! I'm getting that one!

    @junebabyjoy I completely agree!
  • Third time mom. Used a regular sound only monitor for my first. Then upgraded to a video with our second. Not sure how I lived without it. Now I'm considering getting the owlette sock thing.

  • @MrsB8214 thank you! I found one on Craigslist and didn't want to buy it without someone having tried it before. I would love the owlette, but it's so expensive!
  • We bought the ibaby and have been testing it out so far. I like that it tells the temp of the room. I also have the owlet on my list but there is a really good review on Amazon which talks about why it might not be as sensitive as they say and its very believable.

  • We got the Owlet & video monitor. Peace of mind is priceless.
  • @shannonrnbsn My sister used Snuza and totally loved it...so I got one too. Portable for travel and easy to use. Would love an Owlet but it seemed to not have all the quirks worked out yet and the price deterred me too. Will pair it with a video monitor of some kind.
  • We just bought high security IP cameras and use DHs old iPhone. The range is fantastic, I can put DS2 down for a nap and take DS1 across the street or next door (outside) to play with friends. We had a video Motorola when DS1 was born, but it died and we upgraded to these. I like the idea of the Owlet monitor though.

  • Hi!! In my opinion a baby monitor with a video of good quality is enough and you don't need to monitor also movements.. I use the Annie Baby Monitor app and I am absolutely satisfied because even if it is only an app it is very reliable and every time when my daughter wakes up I see it on my phone immediately.. I can recommend this app to everyone who needs to control its kids but doesn't want to spend too much money for normal monitors

While I agree with this, that a good quality video monitor SHOULD be enough, I have to disagree. My niece stopped breathing when she was about 4 months old, and luckily my sister had the AngelCare movement monitor in her crib. It saved her life.
That being said, my sister had a love/hate with AngelCare. As soon as my niece was old enough to roll, if she rolled off the mat, the alarm would go off.
My neighbors had the Owlett sock thing and they hate it. Rather their kid hates it so much he pulls it off. I have also heard this from other parents as well as some of the reviews.
DH and I have registered for the Mimo monitor. It is a movement mat as well as a onesie. You have the option to use either one or both. It sends the info to your computer or smart device, just like many monitors these days. It tracks babies sleeping patterns, breathing and movement, and sends alerts in case of an emergency. The onesies come in sizes up to a year or 18 months I think?
We are pairing it with an audio/video monitor, probably the nest, since we already have their thermostat and other products.

I'm going to do either the owlet or angelcare for the first six months and the nest long term.
  • Yes on the owlet - definitely getting it. I know it is expensive, but it seems totally worth it to me. I also registered for a normal video monitor that hooks up to your smartphone, can't remember what brand off the top of my head though.
  • @sdLindenberg - that's great to know about the Angelcare! That's what we're registered for now as they have a video monitor model now as well, but that makes sense about once they can roll around...

this is is one of those things where I'm just like "WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CHOICES?!" I need one, reliable model that has all the things.
  • @junebabyjoy my boss had the angelcare and told me the other day that her daughter rolled off it at 6mths too scaring the bejeesus out of them. They just adjusted it and went on, she still highly recommends it.
  • My bff has the angelcare also. The only other issue is if you go to pick up baby and forget to turn off the monitor it will alarm, waking up the other parent. Just something to be aware of.

I've registered for the snuza (sp?) the one that clips to baby's diaper. Has anyone used it or one like it?
