Small baby

I searched for this topic and only found ones from when we were Preggo. At her 2 month appt LO measured at 9 lbs and 21 inches which is the 1st and 3rd percentile respectively. They actually brought in different nurses to measure her again to make sure it was right. When we talked to the doc she didn't seem to concerned but it really has me worried. She eats 4oz of pumped milk every 3 hours so she is eating enough but could my diet affect how much weight she puts on? Any  SM who had small babies that grew normally?

Re: Small baby

  • I wasn't even on the charts until I was 12! And am a perfect nornal adult. My first is in the 10th and my second sits at the third, we'll see where this little guy winds up- my kids tend to fall off the curve at 6/9 months and then stay there. As long as she stays on her own curve i really wouldn't worry, some kiddos are just tiny

  • My first daughter only weighed 8lbs 4 oz at her 2 month check up. She was a good eater just very petite. She's 2 now and is at the 50th % for weight and 87th%  for height. I think if she's eating good and your dr isn't concerned, I would be either.
  • Im also a FTM but my little girl is small as well. Was during pregnancy as well and my OB wasn't concerned since I'm on the smaller side. At birth she was petit too, 1 month appointment she was behind in weight gain but ER dr wasn't concerned bc she eats enough and has enough diapers. We're on track to be about the same size as your LO at our 2 month appointment as well.

To echo other PP, if your doctor isn't concerned there's probably no reason to be worried at all.  Our LO is small (about 10th percentile) because she fell way behind the first two weeks of life, due to low milk supply.  We will be thrilled if she crosses the 9 pound threshold at her two month appointment!  But our dr isn't worried because she's alert, strong, slowly but steadily gaining weight at this point, eating a good amount each day, and making the right number of wet and dirty diapers.  There are a bunch of different factors to consider, so I'm sure if your doctor isn't concerned you just have a healthy, small baby on your hands.  :)  I know a couple of babies who were on the small side as infants, once in similar percentiles to yours, and they're all perfectly healthy toddlers now!
  • My LO was Preemie at 6w early. So he's always been on the small side. He weighed only 7.9 at his 2 mo checkup. We are thinking he's at about 10lbs now, and he'll be 3 mo this Wednesday. DS drinks 4.5ox at each feeding and 4oz. At his 2 nighttime feedings. Even if he ends up being in the smaller percentiles, as long as he's eating on track, and growing, whether it be a lot or a little, the Dr. Said not to worry too much.
  • I read the other day about how the growth chart that most doctors use is curved by the amount of formula fed babies there are in the US and that formula fed babies grow faster in the earlier months and breast fed babies start growing faster after 6 months.  So don't worry unless your doctor is worried.  As long as your baby is gaining and producing enough diapers they are doing great.  My first was super small, still is, but my daughter is a beast.  Wearing 6 month clothes at 8 weeks.  Every baby is different.

My daughter has always been less than 5th% since birth and she is now a happy healthy petite 7 year old. I'm only 5'2 and was always small growing up. Some of us are just fun sized :)
I wanted to add that I EBF her till she was one and she was always growing just at her own pace and scale. Doctors were never concerned.
