Nap routine

I know a lot of us are having nap time issues.  I was hoping the moms that have successful nap time routines could share how they do it.  I'm trying to come up with a routine to make napping (out of my arms) more successful!

He's in daycare now and still learning how to nap with all that stimulation and unswaddled, but our routine was a three hour cycle of eating, awake/ play, then napping. I'd try to catch him as he started to look more tired and definitely if he yawned, I know it's nap time. I turn off the lights, close the blinds, turn on the white noise, and put him in is Merlin magic suit (substitute swaddle if you swaddle), then rock him and as he falls asleep, put him in the crib. He was taking between 45 min-1.5 hr naps consistency through the day. I wouldn't let him nap past 4:30 or 5 and would keep him up until bedtime at 7. Things are a bit different with daycare and work now. I recommend the book Moms on Call. It has good tips for schedules, etc. I don't follow it 100% with the sleep training aspect (eg, wait 10 minutes before you go soothe), but thought it was useful.

Ours is almost identical to @spottedginger  We just started using the Merlin suit for naps and it's working well so far. I have much more success getting her down for a good nap in the morning verus later in the day. Afternoon naps are still sometimes in my arms and a lot shorter.
  • As soon as I notice DD getting sleepy I rock her. Nap time is always in my arms and lasts anywhere from 15-45 minutes. It works for us.
  • @jenEP yes afternoon naps are so much harder right?!
  • DD is swaddled, nursed, rocked, and given a paci when I notice she's tired. Then as she's about to fall asleep I put her in the swing. She isn't awake more than 2 hours at a time until her last awake stretch at night where she'll be awake 3-5 hours.
She naps anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours. I usually will wake her up by 3.5 hours if she hasn't woken up on her own.
    We're 13 weeks, 10 weeks adjusted.
  • @taysun is nap time always in the swing? My DD will nap for hours in her swing, she loves it, but trying to limit to 1 per day to get her used to her crib (she only lasts 15-45 mins though). Will it set bad habits you think? Or only being able to fall asleep while swinging?

Nap time is always in the swing unless someone is holding her. It could be setting a bad habit and I'm probably not the best to take sleep advice from since we still bed share.
She's never slept in the crib but we're starting to let her spend more awake time in it to get used to it.
Honestly I'm too afraid to transition because we get such good sleep right now. However I think it's going to have to start happening soon.
