Mosquito Repellent

I'm a teacher, so there's no way around recess duty. Mosquitos are starting to come out. Does anyone know pregnancy safe mosquito repellent that I can use? I'll be 28 weeks Saturday. Thanks ladies!

Re: Mosquito Repellent

  • I know that CDC is recommending a DEET based repellant for all pregnant women traveling to zika areas so my presumption is they deem DEET based repellants to be safe.

  • Eek, deet stuff makes me sick even when not pregnant. Better than zika I guess...
  • If you have any chance of contracting Zika, you need the heavy stuff. Otherwise, I use citronella oil mixed with dish soap and water and honestly I never get bites, but I'm also naturally repellant I think because bugs generally avoid me. My husband on the other hand hides inside all summer.
  • OFF! I've seen is recommended for pregnant women and has DEET in it, but if you're sensitive to the smell I heard Avon Skin so Soft is really good, too and is DEET free. I saw a bunch on the CDC site and then just check ingredients for what's safe for pregnancy.

  • The Avon bug guard is awesome. No deet and actually works.
  • If you are not in a Zika infested area and you just want the bug repellant and a precaution, and you don't want to be spraying yourself in DEET and chemicals every day, I recommend this REPEL spray: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004N59OFU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
I am a mosquito magnet and this works for me.  Again if you live somewhere where Zika has actually presented you should use the DEET spray but if not, there is no reason to.
  • Here in southern ga we get a lot of mosquitos. I've been using all the deet.

  • I bought Natrapel. The main ingredient is listed as effective by the CDC (when I was looking into the whole Zika thing). However, it made me very itchy and I felt sticky. So I can't recommend it, but check out their website for pregnant ladies and it gives some options.

  • Does anyone know if North Carolina has Zika? We have a ton of mosquitos here in the summer I was bite two times and am so paranoid I hide in my screened in porch when I go outside in morning and evening.  I know from travelers we have gotten it but do we have the type of mosquitos that carry it? If a person who has it is bite does that mosquito now have it and can give it to other people?

  • @Jerseygirl9090 I just read that NC has the potential for mosquitos to carry it, but an outbreak there would be mild and easily contained. I will say that no area of the US right now "has Zika". There are areas that have the capacity to carry the virus, but at the moment there has been no evidence of our mosquito populations being affected. And it does seem that would be the logical way for it to be spread, a person with the virus who traveled and acquired the virus who gets bit by a mosquito that is capable of carrying the virus.

That's why I was so angry watching the news about 2 weeks ago when they were encouraging Americans to fly to the affected areas if they weren't pregnant or planning because plane tickets are cheap. Uhhhh...trying to spread this stuff?
  • @Bear14+ Yeah that's what I thought, when I found the two bites on me I started freaking out and googling everything about it. I think its crazy they are encouraging people to travel to countries that have it like I understand people want to vacation and they aren't pregnant or planning to be pregnant but they are just helping spread the virus here in the US and putting the rest of us at risk.

  • Thanks for your input ladies!!!
  • My doctor said deet was fine. Heading to Florida in April and that was his recommendation
  • I live in Florida and don't wear bug spray at night .... That's how worried about Zika I am over here. IF we had infected mosquitoes I would feel differently.
