RSV anyone?

Well babygirl was just diagnosed with RSV. :( poor baby. It started friday with a little cough, and just progressed. Monday night i took her to the pedi and they said it was a virus and to just watch her. Well this morning the poor girl was wheezing so bad and really struggling so we went to the e.r.
They did a breathing treatment and she seemed to get better. Well they told me that there really wasnt any treatment and to wait it out.
My question, anyone dealt with this and how long did it last? I feel so bad for her but she seems to feel fine. Shes laughing and playing but the wheezing is breaking my heart.

Re: RSV anyone?

  • So sorry!  My LO had all of the symptoms of RSV but tested negative (Dr. seemed dubious about the result) a couple of months ago.  Did they give you a prescription for albuterol so you can do treatments at home when she's wheezing?  That really helped with the scariest part, the wheezing.  The runny nose and coughing hung around for two weeks or so.

  • They didnt. They said that sometimes the side effects of the albuterol are worse than the the wheeze. But im to watch her and if anything seems off to go back in. But she actually seems to be doing better this afternoon. So fongers crossed were over the worst of it.

Baby boy is actually just getting over it.  It started the Tuesday before last.  Started as a little congestion, then cough, Thursday he started wheezing so I took him to his pediatrician.  He gave him albuterol drops.  (Totally ancient med, I'm done with that office)  Friday he started coughing so hard he started vomiting everywhere!  Took him to after hours care where they tested for RSV.  Told me what to watch out for, rapid breathing and dehydration, and gave him an albuterol inhaler.  He's finally feeling better.  It took over a week.  He still has a bit of a cough though.  It's awful to watch them go through all that.
  • So sorry you mama's are going through this! Side note - I am a scientist and have been doing work with the RSV virus, there is a lot of interest in finding a vaccine for this so kiddos don't have to suffer through this. It can be scary and very severe in some cases. Take care of those LOs!
  • We had RSV for a month starting on Christmas Day.  It sucked.  We were given a nebulizer and albuterol and had to do that every 4 hours for a week and a half.  I have a friend whose baby wound up in the PICU for over a week with it.  Scary stuff.  Hope your little one gets better.
  • Our LO had RSV about a month ago, he was sick for about 4 days then it cleared up. The bad parts of it anyway. His couch lingered for a few weeks but he is doing much better now. Hope your LO feels better soon!
  • Were going back to the dr today. The didnt send her home with anything and her wheezing is no better. Its no worse, just not getting any better. It breaks my heart :(
  • Poor sweetie, sorry to hear that :(.  I wonder what side effects of the albuterol/nebulizer treatments your doctor was concerned about?  I know they recommended we not give LO a treatment right before bed because it's a stimulant, is that the concern?  I hope that wheeze goes away soon.
  • Basically they said that it can make her jittery and keep her awake and it hasnt been proven that it actually does anything. I know when the gave her the treatment in the er it seemed to help for maybe an hour. Also ive notice that when were home or she's at day care its worse. We were out all afternoon and the wheezing was better. Im wondering if the heat aggravates it.
Anyway, the dr gave me the nebulizer because it made me feel better to be able to do something for her. She also gave me sone saline to run with the nebulizer to try just a saline mist and see if that helps without giving her the medication. We got home tonight and she was fine, shes now asleep with no problems.
But its comforting to know i have it here incase i feel she needs it. Im pretty impressed, her pedi was very willing to do what made us comfortable.
