Pregnant after 35

Weight Gain Calculator

One of the girls on my bmb posted a link to this pregnancy weight gain calculator that tells you what your target weight range is as you go along. I thought I'd post it in case anyone else wants to keep tabs on things. https://www.calculator.net/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator.html

Seeing this made me feel a little better about my expanding body and the road to recovery that lies ahead. It's nice to have reassurance that you're on track, or a warning if you're on your way to making recovery harder than it needs to be.

...With that being said, I'm excited to read the junk food thread I saw before posting this. The cravings thread is my favorite one on my bmb. I'm by no means eating perfectly, but I'm including healthy stuff and staying active. And the chart I posted just patted me on the head and said, "It's okay -- you're doing just fine."

Re: Weight Gain Calculator

  • This calculator is a great tool. I referred to it in my second trimester when I was was worried I wasn't gaining enough. It turns out I was doing just fine, and that I am just one of those people who gains more in the first trimester.
  • I gained more in the first trimester, too. I was too sick to go to the gym and I had to eat all of the time.

  • OMG after posting the junk food thread I went to the OB and I gained 4# sonce last week! That is not abmormal for me as my weight fluctuates 3-4 pounds every day but, man! Damn you fruit tart!
  • @CarrieandRoy are you back at OTF?
  • @Goldsgirl9 yeah, I just missed 6.5 weeks during the first trimester due to nausea. Plus a couple of weeks recently due to a cold. Are you still going?

  • @CarrieandRoy Good for you! Keep going. I just stopped at 33 weeks. I had contractions while walking last week so i took a few days off. Went back this Tuesday and the same thing happened. DH refuses to let me go back so I'm going to start walking around my neighborhood and doing some push ups, squats and lunges at home at my pace. I'm super disappointed about it though. I can't wait until I'm cleared to go back but the thought of OTF post c section scares me.
  • Tell me what OTF is, ladies!

@Goldsgirl9 I've also recently had to stop my higher-intensity workouts, at 27 weeks, because of too many BH contractions. I doubt it's dangerous, but it was making me very uncomfortable. I'm just walking, a lot, but it's not the same.

  • @redheadbride15 ugh! I feel you. DH is worried cause I had DS 3 weeks early so he doesn't want to risk it. I'll see what the OB says on Weds.

OTF = Orange Theory Fitness. I was totally hooked 5 weeks before getting pregnant. Dropped 15lbs and was actually running for the first time. The work out is basically interval training, cardio and weights, and you are competing against yourself which I love. It makes me push myself as hard as I possibly can. Definitely look it up and the theory behind it. Supposedly you continue burning calories for 24-48 hours after the work out. I love it!
  • @redheadbride15 Orange Theory is awesome. It's a gym, if that wasn't clear from Goldsgirl's description. A trainer runs a class of up to 24 people split into two groups. So it's like personal training, but at a more affordable rate.

@Goldsgirl9 I'm daunted by the idea of going to the gym while also working from home and taking care of an infant, but I think it will be really good for me, physically and mentally. My mom said she'll watch the baby. I just hope I have the energy for the workout!

  • Cool! I hate gyms, but we'll see whether my post-partum self decides it needs to change my attitude toward them. I prefer 10 times over being outside in the fresh air and by myself (or with my husband). I get pretty self-competitive though, always pushing my time and distance running or hiking, and I was doing an interval run workout at least 2 times per week (I stopped that at the beginning of pregnancy though - only kept up the slower endurance runs). I don't do any strength training though, unless you count climbing mountains with a 35 pound pack.

  • I had a gym membership years ago, and a personal trainer once a week that would help and encourage me throughout the week if he wasn't with a client. He moved to PA and then the gym felt so impersonal and unwelcoming. It was hard to stay motivated and inspired all by myself in a room full of strangers. I like Orange Theory because the workout is planned for me, the trainer is like a coach/cheerleader, the environment is energizing, and I leave feeling like I had a kickass workout. If you have an OTF near you, you can do one workout free to try it out if you're curious.

P.S. I live in Florida, so the sun and heat make working out outside unpleasant.

@CarrieandRoy i think you'll go back once you feel settled. You'll enjoy getting out of the house and away from the baby and work for an hour. My issue will be the recovery and when I can go. Hopefully this little guy sleeps through the night at 3 months like DS so I can start going at 5am again. That's my goal. Whether it happens or not remains to be seen.

@redheadbride15 I live in South FL and the weather is miserable and no where to hike :(. I do love OTF and sorry if I wasn't clear. My brain is officially mush thanks to this baby.

Edited because spelling is hard and my iPhone hates me.
  • Haha, thanks ladies! You've convinced me not to move to Florida :) There should be SOME perks of living in the frozen north. Even when there are several feet of snow on the ground working out outside is really pleasant. There are only a few days in the hottest part of the summer when it's 90+ degrees and I don't want to be running or hiking outside. Those are the days that I swim.

Yes! Some parts are pretty much like that all year. Where I grew up, we still got hot summer days and some colder winter days, but you could be outside and comfortable almost all the time. I miss it.
  • Glad to see I'm on track. With my son I gained 21 lbs. I hope to gain less this time around since I'm eating healthier and my body has plenty of extras in storage to go to.

  • This is interesting! I am one of those people who doesn't actually know my weight, so I just have to rely on the OB to tell me if I'm out of line! But this is still interesting to see.
